Notes: Abstract The tomographic reconstruction technique generates a two-dimensional latitude versus height electron density distribution from sets of slant total electron content measurements (TEC) along ray paths between beacon satellites and ground-based radio receivers. In this note, the technique is applied to TEC values obtained from data simulated by the Sheffield/UCL/SEL Coupled Thermosphere/Ionosphere/Model (CTIM). A comparison of the resulting reconstructed image with the ‘input’ modelled data allows for verification of the reconstruction technique. All the features of the high-latitude ionosphere in the model data are reproduced well in the tomographic image. Reconstructed vertical TEC values follow closely the modelled values, with the F-layer maximum density (NmF2) agreeing generally within about 10%. The method has also been able successfully to reproduce underlying auroral-E ionisation over a restricted latitudinal range in part of the image. The height of the F2 peak is generally in agreement to within about the vertical image resolution (25 km).

Notes: [Auszug] In the first experiments, it was confirmed that intra-peritoneal injections of soluble insulin (4-12 units/ kgm.) given 15 min. before egg white (24 ml./kgm.) or dextran (300 mgm./kgm.) aggravated the anaphylac-toid reactions; its speed of onset was increased, and the reaction which developed was ...

Notes: [Auszug] We have administered thyroxine sodium (1 or 2 mg/kg daily) to groups of rat and mice and then tested them for sensitivity to histamine. In all experiments, a temporary increase in sensitivity to histamine was noted, coupled with elevated tissue and urinary histamine. Continued treatment with ...

Notes: [Auszug] The in vitro anti-5-hydroxytryptamine activity of compounds was investigated using the isolated oestrus rat uterus preparation. Dose-response curves to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) were obtained in the presence or absence of varying concentrations of antagonist and the concentration of antagonist ...

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the anti-nociceptive activity of morphine were made in mice which had received intracerebroventricular injections of small doses of ouabain or dopamine, which were themselves devoid of anti-nociceptive activity. Both agents produced an immediate potentiation of the anti-nociceptive activity of morphine. Since centrally administered ouabain can increase whole-brain dopamine levels, it is possible that the observed potentiating effects of ouabain may involve a dopaminergic component.

Notes: Abstract Using a tail immersion technique in mice, the anti-nociceptive activity of some narcotic agonists (diamorphine, etorphine, morphine and pethidine), partial agonists (cyclazocine, nalorphine and pentazocine) and naloxone have been determined alone, and after the intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) or noradrenaline (NA). In common with morphine, the anti-nociceptive effects of each agonist and partial agonist studied were significantly increased by ICV 5-HT, and significantly attenuated by ICV NA. The marginal anti-nociceptive activity of naloxone was not significantly affected by the ICV injection ot either amine. It is concluded that the anti-nociceptive effects of all narcotic agonist and partial agonist agents are determined by the balance within the brain of the activities of the two amines, 5-HT and NA.
