    Notes: Abstract A monocyte-derived steroid-induced factor has been shown previously to induce dispersive locomotion in human neutrophils and to lower adhesion to an albumin-coated glass surface. In this paper we show that this factor inhibits adhesion of neutrophils to bovine aorta and human endothelial cells by an undetermined mechanism. It induces unique changes in neutrophil shape with a characteristic monopolar pattern of F-actin distribution, which may correlate with the dispersive locomotion observed in the absence of a concentration gradient. This factor also inhibits N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine-induced chemotaxis of neutrophils in a modified Boyden chamber assay. The reduction of adhesion and the inhibition of chemotaxis by the factor in vitro indicate a possible in vivo anti-inflammatory role.

    Notes: Summary A new technique of programmed intra-venous insulin infusion at a series of decreasing rates has been used to imitate the magnitude and time course of biological responses obtained by the subcutaneous route. Groups of normal rats prepared with indwelling venous cannulae were injected subcutaneously with soluble porcine insulin, 0.4U/kg. The pattern of the resulting hypoglycaemic response was subsequently matched by a 2-hour intravenous insulin infusion at rates decreasing stepwise from 0.3 to 0.05 U kg-1h-1. The total amount of insulin infused intravenously was only 50% of that required subcutaneously. In addition, subcutaneous or intravenous infusions of insulin at 0.05 U kg-1h-1 were given to two groups of rats from the same batch. When both infusions were continued until plateau responses were reached, a significantly greater lowering of plasma glucose was caused by the intravenous route. These results suggest that when insulin is given subcutaneously significant inactivation of the insulin occurs at or near the injection site.

    Notes: Abstract Omai is a high tonnage, low-grade, world-class gold deposit located in the Paleoproterozoic Guiana Shield. It is the second most important gold deposit in the Guiana Shield (after Las Cristinas, Venezuela), and one of the largest in South America (4.0 million oz.). Sm-Nd and Sr isotope data are presented for host rocks and for scheelite from auriferous quartz-carbonate-scheelite-sulfide-telluride veins from the Omai deposit. Gold-bearing veins are hosted by the Paleoproterozoic Barama-Mazaruni Supergroup, a greenstone belt sequence consisting of mafic volcanic rocks interbedded with sedimentary rocks that are intruded by quartz-feldspar porphyry and rhyolite dikes. This lithologic sequence was folded and metamorphosed to lower greenschist facies during the Paleoproterozoic Trans-Amazonian orogeny. The volcano-sedimentary unit was intruded by a post-tectonic quartz monzodiorite-diorite-hornblendite stock. Initial Nd isotope ratios for the Omai volcanic rocks range from ɛNd=+2.1 to +4.2. These values suggest that this part of the Guiana Shield was a site of new crust formation during the Paleoproterozoic and was not contaminated by older (Archean), reworked continental crust. Initial Nd isotope ratios for the Omai stock range between +0.5 and +2.3, which suggest limited contamination with previously formed continental crust. Although the Nd isotopic ratios of gold-related scheelites overlap with those of the host rocks, particularly the tholeiitic basalts at the interpreted time of vein emplacement, the lack of both isotopic mixing and significant Nd movement during the hydrothermal process suggest that the Nd isotope composition can be used to determine the isotopic characteristics of the ore fluid source area. At Omai, the ore fluid is largely derived from a radiogenic Nd source, represented by mantle or lower crustal reservoirs. Strontium isotope ratios for the scheelites cluster tightly between 0.7019 and 0.7021. The Sr isotope data suggest that unlike Nd, Sr was significantly mobile during the hydrothermal process. The fluids responsible for the Omai deposit may have picked up Sr along the flow path. The constant low Sr isotope values of scheelites probably reflect the key role that the local tholeiitic basalts played as the main source of Sr in the fluids. Whereas Nd isotopes identify the fluid source area, the Sr isotopes map the fluid flow paths.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Starting out from our previous observations that defects in the immune system – brain feedback predispose to pathogenic immune responses, our interest focusses at the roles of adrenergic/cholinergic neurotransmitters in brain – immune interactions. We have shown in rodent models that 1) both catecholamines and acetylcholine are potent modulators of peripheral immune functions, 2) cholinergic signals are involved in the afferent signalling of the immune system, and 3) lymphocytes not only express functional adrenergic and cholinergic receptors, but synthesize and release neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine, in quantitative dependence of differentiation and activation. Studies are presently being initiated to investigate the role(s) of these non-neural neurotransmitters within immune tissues, and to explore the relevance of excitatory amino acids as important central neurotransmitters in the brain – immune system dialogue.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Ausgehend von vorangegangenen Befunden, wonach Störungen des Feedbacks zwischen Immunsystem und Gehirn zu pathogenen Immunreaktionen prädisponieren, konzentriert sich unser Interesse auf die Rolle von adrenergen/cholinergen Neurotransmittern im Rahmen der Neuroimmunomodulation. Die Daten im Ratten- und Mausmodell zeigen, dass 1) sowohl Katecholamine als auch Azetylcholin potente immunregulatorische Eigenschaften besitzen, 2) cholinerge Mechanismen entscheidend an den afferenten Signalen des aktivierten Immunsystems beteiligt sind, und 3) Lymphozyten nicht nur funktionelle adrenerge/cholinerge Rezeptoren exprimieren, sondern auch in der Lage sind, Neurotransmitter, wie Azetylcholin, zu synthetisieren und in quantitativer Abhängigkeit des zellulären Aktivierungszustandes zu sezernieren. Laufende Untersuchungen haben zum Ziel, die Rolle dieser nicht neuronalen Neurotransmitter in Immungewegen, sowie die Relevanz exzitatorischer Aminosäuren als wichtige zentrale Neurotransmitter im Rahmen des Dialoges Gehirn-Immunsystem aufzuklären.
