Notes: Epitaxial semiconducting iron–disilicide grains have been formed using an Fe–Ti bilayer on (100) silicon. The reaction kinetics of the Fe–Ti–Si diffusion couple have been studied in detail as a function of annealing conditions, and the intermediate titanium thickness. Both rapid thermal annealing and long-time furnace annealing have been used in this investigation. After a two-stage annealing sequence, with a selective wet etch removal of the unreacted top metal stack in between, a distinct trilayered structure was formed. This trilayer was found to consist of a top layer of smaller β-FeSi2 grains of random orientation, an amorphous Ti–O–Fe–Si layer with nanocrystallites embedded, and a bottom layer of uniformly large coherently epitaxial β-FeSi2 grains. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigation is presented of ion beam synthesized buried CoFe-silicide prepared by sequential equal-dose implantations of both metals. The TEM analysis shows strong evidence for the formation of a metastable ternary Co0.5Fe0.5Si2 phase during the implantation. Annealing of these structures at 1000 °C results in the formation of a continuous buried layer, but phase separation occurs into B-oriented CoxFe1−xSi2 and twinned α-FexCo1−xSi2 (both with x close to 1). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An internal jugular catheter, which was inserted into a patient with a traumatic haemopneumothorax, accidentally entered the pleural cavity. This was initially undetected because the two signs most frequently used to confirm correct placement, those of blood reflux and fluctuation of central venous pressure with respiration, were positive. A number of precautions are suggested which should be taken when central venous catheters are inserted in patients with thoracic trauma.

Notes: Summary The pressor action of guanethidine (4 mg/kg) is enhanced by previous administration of reserpine (2 mg/kg), when the time elapsing between the injections of the two drugs is varied between 2 min and 8 hr. This enhancement was observed in the dog (anaesthetized, or spinal or nialamide-pretreated animals) and in the cat. The pressor effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline were not modified by reserpine. Guanethidine caused the nictitating membrane of the dog and the cat, as well as isolated cat spleen strips, to contract and the contractions were enhanced by reserpine; however, the contractions of the nictitating membrane induced by electrical stimulation of the postganglionic sympathetic nerve were not changed by reserpine. Similarly, the pressor effect caused by electrical stimulation of the central end of the vagus nerve was not enhanced. Several mechanisms are discussed in order to explain the observed potentiation; the results are in good agreement with the hypothesis of the existence of different noradrenaline pools.

Notes: Abstract. Objective and Design: Since IgE-dependent reactions induce the inducible isoform of NO synthase, we postulated the involvement of the transcription factor NF-κB.¶Materials: 72 Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups and used to study the hemorrhagic necrosis of the small intestine elicited by anaphylaxis.¶Treatment: Passive anaphylaxis was produced by i.p. sensitization with IgE anti-dinitrophenyl monoclonal antibody and i.v. challenge with the cognate antigen.¶Methods: Competitive PCR was used to assay the expression of p50 subunit of NF-κB. κB-binding activity was assayed by electrophoretic mobility shift assay.¶Results: The PCR assay showed a time-dependent increase of mRNA coding for the p50 subunit of NF-κB, which was maximal 1 h after challenge (40 ± 3, versus 230 ± 32 f M, mean ± SEM) and decreased to prechallenge level at 4 h. κB-binding activity was also increased.¶Conclusions: IgE-mediated reactions trigger a pathway for nuclear signaling that seems to be related to the intermediate/late response of the allergic reaction.

Notes: Reaction of amino acids with N-methyl-N-(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)trifluoroaceamide (MTbSTFA) in acetonitrile affords good yields of amino acid derivatives with excellent gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric properties. The single-step derivatization procedure is highly reproducible. The TBDMS amino acids are stable at room temperature for at least three days. Only a single peak is observed for each amino acid. The procedure allows simultaneous analysis of asparagine and glutamine together with other serum amino acids. Separation is achieved on a borosilicate glass capillary coated with OV-1. The mass spectra of the TBDMS amino acids possess characteristic diagnostic ions. These properties were used in the sensitive detection by GC-MS and SIM-GC-MS of GABA and pipecolic acid in the serum of a newborn suspected of a Zellweger-type syndrome, which could not be detected by other methods.

Notes: Abstract We describe the results of experiments on the35S irradiation of a metastable superconducting detector between 2.0 and 3.4 K using a second-derivative rf SQUID readout operated in an integral mode. The detector consisted of 3×106 tin grains, distributed in diameter from 10–25 micron. Comparison with computer simulation based on a hot border model consistent with the measurement protocols yields reasonable agreement despite the large timing uncertainties associated with the measuring systematics of the SQUID system.
