    Notes: A very compact, vacuum compatible charge coupled device (CCD) camera has been developed for vacuum ultraviolet and soft x-ray imaging spectroscopy. It can house any CCD frame format and two of them have been selected: 385×576 pixels, suitable for normal incidence spectroscopy (300–2500 Å), and 256×1024 pixels, for grazing incidence applications (5–300 Å). Owing to its small and lightweight package, it can be placed at the focus of vacuum spectrometers. A new concept cooling system is based on a three stage thermoelectric cooler in thermal connection with the CCD through a 30-cm-long flexible conductor, allowing the detector to have stress-free movements along the focal plane and a constant temperature. The camera head has been designed to achieve a high cooling efficiency, thus the CCD can be operated at −40 °C. This detector is well suited for applications that require high sensitivity and signal to noise ratio, wide dynamic range, good spatial and spectral resolutions. In addition, it overcomes the limits of fixed detectors and lets the optical performances of the spectrometer remain unchanged. The CCD camera has been tested during an experiment of laser produced plasma spectroscopy and some preliminary results are reported. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary A case of Farber disease is reported and the ultrastructural pathology of the disease is reviewed. The present case showed the typical clinical picture of Farber disease. Acid ceramidase deficiency was demonstrated biochemically. Ultrastructural features of one subcutaneous nodule and a skin biopsy are described. Three lysosomal inclusions characterize Farber disease: curvilinear tubular bodies observed mainly in the reticuloendothelial system, “banana bodies” recorded only in the peripheral nervous system and zebra-like bodies which are essentially a neuronal storage. The nature of each is discussed and the skin biopsy is emphasized for its important diagnostic interest.

    Notes: Abstract Young chickens were trained to find food by ground-scratching in the centre of a closed uniform arena and were then tested in arenas of similar areas but of different shapes. Chickens showed localized searching behaviour in the square-shaped arena, and maintained this behaviour when placed in a circular or triangular (both equilateral and isosceles) arena. With a rectangular-shaped arena, obtained by doubling the original square-shaped one, chickens showed more dispersed searching along the major axis, but searching tended to be concentrated around the centres of the composing squares and around the centre of the rectangle itself. When trained in a square- or triangle-shaped arena and then tested in an arena of the same shape but a larger area, chickens displayed searching behaviour at two different distances from the wall of the arena, one corresponding to the correct distance (i.e. centre) in the smaller (training) arena, the other to the actual centre of the test arena. On the other hand, in a circular arena, chickens searched mainly at a distance midway between the radius of the small (training) and of the large (testing) circular arena. These results suggest that, during training, chickens encoded information on both the absolute and the relative distance of the food from the walls of the arena, the latter information being more accurate when the arena displayed identifiable features such as corners.

    Notes: Abstract Day-old chicks were exposed to point-light animation sequences depicting either a walking hen or a rotating cylinder. On a subsequent free-choice test (experiment 1) the chicks approached the novel stimulus, irrespective of this being the hen or the cylinder. In order to obtain equivalent local motion vectors, in experiments 2 and 3 newly hatched chicks were exposed either to a point-light animation sequence depicting a walking hen, or to a positionally scrambled walking hen (i.e. an animation in which exactly the same set of dots in motion as that employed for the walking hen was presented, but with spatially randomized starting positions). Chicks tested on day 1 (experiment 2) or on day 2 (i.e. after a period in the dark following exposure on day 1 (experiment 3)) proved able to discriminate the two animation sequences: males preferentially approached the novel stimulus, females the familiar one. These results indicate that discrimination was not based on local motion vectors, but rather on the temporally integrated motion sequence.

    Notes: Abstract The scientific performance evaluation of a photon countingimaging system is presented. The detector is constituted by an ICCD camera with RbTe photocathode(optimized for UV radiation), and dedicated electronics for the acquisition and analysis ofthe events. For each photon event on the CCD, a real-time centroid calculation is performed, inorder to reach spatial resolution down to 25 μm FWHM. The system has been tested usingthe 182 cm telescope of the Asiago Observatory.A standard stars field through U Johnson filter,and the Crab pulsar (PSR 0531+21) were observed. From the photometric data, relative magnitudes of the standard stars have been derived, showing a goodlinearity of the detector in the range of flux under consideration, as expected fromprevious laboratory measurements.The pulsar's data have been processed by FFT and epoch foldingtechniques to testthe detector's timing performances in the highest resolutionmode (4.512 ms).These observations show that a space resolved time analysis ofperiodic sources can be performed with 10-7 s accuracy.
