Notes: Time-dependent simulations of energy, particle, and momentum transport are presented, which show improved confinement similar to the high mode (H mode). The transport model incorporates the suppression of turbulence by sheared flows, which are self-consistently calculated. Constraints on the turbulence model from the time evolution of the temperature, density, and velocity profiles are discussed. A regime similar to the very high confinement mode (VH mode) is found to result at higher heating power due to an increase in the width of the transport barrier. Coneutral beam injection lowers the power required for VH mode substantially due to the toroidal rotation shear. The possible role of edge momentum sources such as ion orbit loss is considered, and a comparison between biased probe-induced and heating-induced H modes is made.

Notes: The electrostatic potential is determined for a test electron with v(parallel) (very-much-greater-than) vTe in a uniform magnetized plasma (ωce (very-much-greater-than) ωpe). In the frame of the test electron, part of the spatially oscillatory potential has spherical symmetry over the hemisphere to the rear of the electron and is zero ahead of the electron. A second part of different character, which makes the potential continuous at the plane containing the electron, is oscillatory in the radial direction but decreases almost monotonically in the axial direction.

Notes: The scope and detail of physics contained in computational models for fluid (density, momentum, energy) transport in toroidal plasmas have steadily increased during the past two decades. There has been considerable success in the development and verification of models for sources and sinks of particles, energy, momentum, and magnetic flux. Transport codes have collectively become very useful tools in interpreting experimental data and in providing guidance for new experiments. However, a more thorough understanding of the fundamental transport processes of magnetically confined plasmas and development of improved computational models are needed to enhance the predictive capabilities of transport codes. It is argued that fluid transport modeling by itself cannot lead to a complete understanding of transport—there must be a very strong collaboration among theory, experiment, and modeling on both the fluid and kinetic levels.

Notes: Tokamak sawtooth oscillations are studied with a nonreduced, fully toroidal, resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model that includes Ohmic heating, and parallel and perpendicular thermal conductions. Effects of perpendicular transport in producing different types of sawteeth, varying from simple, periodic oscillations to giant sawteeth with temperature modulations of order unity, and compound sawteeth with multiple relaxations, are demonstrated. Some of the recent experimental observations from large tokamaks, such as the fast crash times and a presumed topological anomaly in the x-ray tomography pictures, thought to be inconsistent with the Kadomtsev reconnection model, are examined and possible explanations are offered.

Notes: The TEXTDB data base organizes the analyzed experimental data from the TEXT experiment so as to aid in understanding the physics of a complete discharge. The data base was constructed using a commercial relational data base. The relational model provided a flexible structure for organizing data from many different diagnostics into a unified description of the plasma discharge.

Notes: Abstract The nonlinear static behavior of a linearly elastic cantilever subjected to a nonconservative force of the follower type is formulated and examined. The formulation allows for finite rotations with small strains (the elastica). Exact solutions are found. The investigation is greatly facilitated by means of a phase plane analysis in which the phase plane variables are related to slope angle and bending moment. Some of the interesting and unusual effects occurring in this system are discussed and illustrated with a set of deflection curves for a typical case.

Notes: Fully aromatic, siloxane-modified polybenzimidazoles and polybenzoxazoles were prepared by a single-stage melt polymerization and characterized. These polymers, which have good solubility in pyridine and N-methylpyrrolidinone, undergo thermooxidative decomposition above 300°C. Model compounds for these two classes as well as polypyromellitimides were also prepared.
