Notes: Abstract The mast cell protective effects of the newly developed long-actingβ 2-adrenergic salmeterol and formoterol were compared with those of conventionally usedβ 2-adrenergic, non-specific β-agonists, disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) and theophylline. With the exception of DSCG, all the test agents inhibited ovalbumin-induced histamine release from enzymically dispersed guinea pig lung mast cells in a dose-dependent fashion. At the maximum concentration tested, theophylline produced the highest level of protection, inhibiting up to 90% of ovalbumin-induced histamine release whereas DSCG produced only 10% inhibition. The maximum inhibition produced by all theβ 2-adrenergic tested was around 45%. While salmeterol was equipotent with salbutamol, formoterol was at least a 100-fold more potent. Hence the present study confirmed the previously reported mast cell stabilizing actions of conventionalβ 2-adrenergic and extended the observation to the newly developed long-acting analogues.

Notes: Summary Capillary Pumped Loop (CPL) is a thermal management device for advanced spacecrafts. This paper presents the operating principles of a CPL and the design characteristics of the components. Another purpose of this experiment was to build up a transparent loop in order to better determine and observe the internal thermofluid dynamics. The results indicated that the CPL could be in normal operation under various heat modes. Observation also told Non-Condensed Gas (NCG) was moving and collecting to somewhere between the condenser section.

Notes: Abstract Previous studies have found the existence of a January effect in many Western countries. In Malaysia, local stock market commentators often talk of a Chinese New Year rally which has not been tested. This study examines empirically the existence of seasonality according to the Gregorian, Chinese and Muslim calendars in the Malaysian-stock market. The results suggest that in Malaysia, when monthly returns are measured according to different types of calendar, evidence in support of seasonality is found. In the main, a January effect, Chinese New Year effect and anAidilfitri effect are found. The Muslim calendar time effect is less widespread than the Chinese New Year and January effect. Possible reasons for the existence of the various types of seasonality, both economic and non-economic, are suggested. In a separate part of the study, a Chinese New Year effect is also found in the Singapore and Hong Kong stock markets.

Notes: Abstract The following were found in shorebirds collected during late April and early May shortly after their arrival in Iceland. Voguracuaria lankesteri n. g., n. sp. was found in the oesophagus of eight of 20 whimbrels Numenius p. phaeopus. The new genus resembles Syncuaria, but males have an area rugosa and small caudal alae, females are didelphic and the vulva is distant from the anus. Also, Syncuaria spp. occupy the gizzard rather than the oesophagus. Skrjabinocerca europaea n. sp. was found in the oesophagus of six of 22 ringed plovers Charadrius h. hiaticula (type-host) and in one dunlin Calidris alpina schinzii. The new species is readily distinguished by the presence of a cuticular flange at the distal end of the left spicule, its slightly recurrent cordons and its longer right spicule. “Skrjabinocerca prima” previously reported from American avocets Recurvirostra americana in North America is recognised as a distinct species and named S. americana n. sp. Ancyracanthopsis shikhobalovi found in the gizzard of whimbrels and Viktorocara charadrii found in the gizzard of ringed plovers are redescribed. Other nematodes found in the birds were Chevreuxia revoluta, Cosmocephalus capellae, C. obvelatus, Echinuria sp., Streptocara sp., Ancyracanthopsis parvialatus, Schistorophus cornutus, S. cirripedesmi, Sciadiocara bihamata, Viktorocara limosae, Microtetrameres sp., Tetrameres sp., Stellocaronema skrjabini and Porrocaecum semiteres.

Notes: Abstract Skrjabinoclava kinsellai n. sp. from the stomach of Oryzomys palustris in Florida is most similar to S. thapari Teixeira de Freitas, 1953, but can be distinguished mainly by the structure of the terminal end of the left spicule which curves ventrally to form a shoe-like structure. Also the tail in both sexes ends in a nipple-like elevation not noted in the types of S. thapari.

Notes: Summary Aviculariella alcyona Wehr, 1931 is redescribed on the basis of specimens from the gizzard of Megaceryle a. alcyon (L.) (Alcedinidae). Numerous characters are reported for the first time. The genus is distinguished from Rusguniella and Ingliseria by the presence of triangular cordons with an inner denticulate border, a prominent cephalic vesicle behind the cordons and simple deirids. The genus also contains: A. brevis (Maplestone, 1931) of Halcyon smyrnensis in India; A. alcedonis (Yamaguti & Mitunaga, 1943) of Alcedo atthis bengalensis in Taiwan; A. collaricephala (Oschmarin, 1959) of Alcedo atthis in the U.S.S.R.; A petterae Bain & Chabaud, 1965 of Corythornis vingtsioides (Turdidae) in Madagascar and A. alii (Rasheed, 1960) n. comb. of Ceryle radis leucomelanura in India; the last-named species may be a synonym of A. brevis. The status of some of these species requires further study. ac]19790421
