Notes: The apparent viscosity model of the semi-solid A356 aluminum alloy, based on fitting ofexperimental data obtained by the Couette type viscometer, was developed in the paper. Thecommercial package CastSoft6.0 coupled with the model was used to simulate the mould filling of thesemi-solid A356 aluminum alloy in the key-shaped component with iron cores. The simulation resultsshowed that the position of the iron cores has an important effect on the filling of the semisolid slurry, and it is easy to obtain the completely filled key-shaped component when the iron cores were near tothe inlet. The filling tests verified that the simulation results have good agreement with theexperimental results. The fitting results indicated that the developed apparent viscosity model ispractical and feasible and it can be used to simulate the mould filling process of the semisolid A356aluminum alloy slurry. Also the parameters were optimized and the optimum parameters are asfollows: the inject pressure is more than 15MPa, the inlet velocity is more than 1.73m/s and theforming temperature is over 585 °C

Notes: Abstract  Nicotine adenine dinucleotide phosphate-dia- phorase staining was used to study nitric oxide synthase activity and distribution in the midbrain visual structures of white leghorn chick embryos and post-hatched chickens. Enzyme staining first appeared in the isthmic region at the tenth embryonic day (E10) in the neuropil of the nucleus isthmi, pars parvocellularis. At E11 faint enzyme positivity appeared also in the nucl. isthmi pars magnocellularis, the nucl. semilunaris and the nucl. isthmo-opticus. The staining intensity of the isthmic nuclei dramatically increased between the 12.5th and the 13th days of incubation. The nucl. isthmi, pars parvocellularis showed the strongest enzyme reaction throughout embryonic life. A day before hatching all the isthmic nuclei were heavily stained, however, nicotine adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase-positive cells occurred exclusively in the nucleus isthmo-opticus. In the tectum opticum, intensely stained cells occupied the stratum fibrosum et griseum superficiale. The layer containing the projection neurons to the isthmo-optic nucleus was unstained. In the isthmic region, the intensity of staining surpassed that of the tectum and reached its maximum at E17 and then slowly decreased till the end of the experimental period (120 days post-hatched). The tractus isthmo-opticus showed nicotine adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase activity throughout the investigated period of life of the chicken, but the tractus tectoisthmo-opticus was unstained. Our results suggest that in the isthmic nuclei, nicotine adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase-positive neurons occur only in the isthmo-optic nucleus and optic tectum. The other positively stained structures are the fibers and terminals of tectal cells. In most brain areasnicotine adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase indicates nitric oxide synthase that produces nitric oxide. The transient appearance of this molecule is probably necessary for neuronal differentiation or the establishment of synaptic connections in the isthmic nuclei, and these developmental changes are under the control of the optic tectum.

Notes: A slurry pot tester was used to evaluate the erosion behavior of alumina (Al2O3), zirconiatoughened alumina (ZTA), and silicon nitride ceramics. The eroded surface of sample was studied byscanning electronic microscope and the primary erosion wear mechanisms for ceramic materials wereanalyzed. On the same experimental condition, erosion wear resistance of materials follows this rule:Si3N4〉ZTA〉Al2O3. The key factor affecting erosive wear performance of ceramics is their microstructure. The primary erosive wear mechanisms for Al2O3, ZTA and Si3N4 ceramics are lateral crack propagation, whole grains pulled out and plastic deformation. The erosive wear performance of Si3N4 ceramic is thebest in this experiment, due to their microstructure morphology with elongated grains

Notes: SiC/Cu composites were prepared by spark plasma sintering under different uniaxial pressure.X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM techniques were used to characterize the sintered samples. It was foundthat higher pressure led to the transformation of Cu into Cu2O. The microhardness of the composites wasimproved by SiC reinforcements. The optimised pressure during the spark plasma sintering was about 50MPa with the maximum hardness of 1.36 GPa

Notes: Cutting tests had been done on the Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) with ceramic cuttingtools. The wear shape of the cutting tool’s surface was observed by the Scanning ElectronMicroscope (SEM). The micro-wear area of the tools was analyzed with energy spectrum. Study onwear shape and wear mechanisms were done when infeed cutting ADI. The result shows that: thecutting speed is an important factor to the tool wear when infeed cutting ADI with CC650 tool, andwith the increase of the cutting speed, the wear value of cutting tool increases obviously. The flankof cutting tool (CC650) has wear land of definite width during cutting, and shows obvious abrasivewear. The crate wear shape of rake face is almost joined to major cutting edge, it is different fromthe typical crate shape of rake face. Elements Fe, Si and Mg in ADI material diffuses to the surfaceof cutting tools (CC650) after cutting, the diffusion exacerbates the wear of cutting tools, and thediffusion degree of rake face is larger than that of flank, abrasive wear, adhesive wear and diffusivewear is chief reasons for tools wear

Notes: Softening, namely degradation, is an important characteristic for the componentslong-termly operating in high temperature environment. In this article, hardness is adopted to indicatethis effect. In order to study the independent effect of high temperature and stress on the materialproperties, the zero-stress ageing experiments at 540 oC, 565 oC, 660 oC and the stress-acceleratingsoftening experiments (i.e. creep experiment) at 540 oC, 565 oC with interruption were carried out insteel 30Cr1Mo1V, respectively. The stress range tested was from 240MPa to 320MPa. The Vicker’shardness was measured. The relationship between Larson-Miller parameter and the Vicker’s hardnessunder zero-stress softening condition and under stress-accelerating softening condition is obtained.Based on the extraction of the effects of temperature and time, the stress softening effect formulae areestablished

Notes: The air cooling rate of the Low Carbon Mn-Si-Cr steel bar with different diameter afteraustenitizing at 910oC and 960oC was simulated by Formaster-F Phase transforming instrument andGleeble-1500 thermal /mechanical simulating machine. Microstructure of the specimen was observedby OLYMPUS PME3 optical microscope and FEI QUANTA200F scanning electron microscope. Thehardness and impact toughness of the steel was tested by HBRV-187.5 hardness tester and JCSJ300-Iinstrumented Charpy impact tester. The experimental result showed that with the amount of CFB inCFB+M mixed microstructure increasing the combination of strength and toughness of the steel wasimproved. The higher the austenitizing temperature of the steel, the wider the air-cooling rate rangeobtaining CFB+M mixed microstructure. However, the steel produces mixed grain after austenitizingat 960 oC. For obtaining fine prior austenite grain size, Ti and Nb alloying element need to be added
