Notes: Abstract Computed tomographic findings in patients with localized and extensive pancreatic head cancer were studied. Widening of the pancreatic duct existed in both groups; mass shadow was hardly detected in localized and rather easily detected in extensive cancer; duodenal invasion and obliteration of fat planes were found only in extensive type; enlargement of the pancreas was a confusing factor of tumor detection in localized type; atrophy of the pancreatic body and tail was a most favorable indirect sign in extensive cancer.

Notes: Abstract Thirty-two patients with hepatocellular carcinoma less than 5 cm in diameter were examined by computed tomography. At the examination 26 patients (81%) were correctly diagnosed. A common type of CT image series was detectable as low density on the precontrast scan, a positive or mixed pattern on dynamic scan, and visible on postcontrast scan. In 10 patients with minute tumors (less than 2 cm), 7 were correctly diagnosed. CT was valuable for diagnosis of the small hepatocellular carcinomas larger than 1 cm by using the dynamic study after an intravenous bolus injection of the contrast medium.

Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: To clarify the relationship between the glucocorticoid receptor and the effectiveness of glucocorticoid therapy in patients with ulcerative colitis, we investigated the number and apparent dissociation constant of glucocorticoid receptor in peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes of patients with ulcerative colitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven patients with ulcerative colitis (5 who responded to intravenous glucocorticoids and 6 who did not) and ten control subjects were studied. The number and apparent dissociation constant of glucocorticoid receptor were measured using a whole-cell binding assay. Results were expressed as a median (interquartile range). RESULTS: The number of glucocorticoid receptors from the six nonresponders, five responders, and ten healthy controls were 4922 (range, 4484–5643), 3413 (range, 3183–4450), and 3610 (range, 2594–3979) binding sites/cell, respectively. The apparent dissociation constant of the glucocorticoid receptors from the nonresponders, responders, and healthy controls were 7.03 (range, 5.66–10), 4.27 (range, 4–5.13), and 6.18 (range, 5.86–6.74) nM, respectively. Nonresponders had a significant increase both in the number of binding sites and in the apparent dissociation constant compared with responders (P=0.045;P=0.029). CONCLUSIONS: The increased number and apparent dissociation constant of glucocorticoid receptor are closely associated with the effectiveness of glucocorticoid therapy. The measurement of the number and apparent dissociation constant of glucocorticoid receptor may be useful in predicting response to glucocorticoids.

Notes: Abstract The interaction of chromium (III) with humic substances obtained from pond sediment was experimentally studied using electrophoresis combined with ultrafiltration. The results show that within the neutral pH range chromium (III) in the presence of humic substances and some organic acids forms uncharged and/or negatively charged organic complexes of various molecular weights. A part of the chromium(III)-humic or -fulvic acid complexes having a negative charge was of lower molecular weight. Chromium (III) spiked in fresh water exists as various soluble anionic and/or uncharged species, and the molecular weights of these anionic complexes correspond to those of chromium(III)-humic and -fulvic complexes. These complexes may remain as stable dissolved forms for 10 days. The significance of the occurrence of chromium(III)-organic complexes in natural water in the geochemical cycle of chromium in the hydrosphere is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Durch Copolymerisation von Butylacrylat (BA) mit Vinylbenzylglycidylether (VBGE) wurden neue Acrylkautschuke mit Epoxyseitengruppen hergestellt.
Notes: New acrylic rubbers with a pendant epoxy group were prepared by copolymerization of butyl acrylate (BA) with vinylbenzyl glycidyl ether (VBGE). The modification of an epoxy system (bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether/p,p′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone) with the acrylic rubbers was carried out in order to increase the toughness of the cured epoxy resin. The addition of 20 wt.-% of the copolymer containing 74% of BA and 26% of VBGE units resulted in a 30% increase in the fracture toughness (KIC) of the cured resin at minimal expenses of strength and modulus of the resin. The modified epoxy resin had two-phase morphology in which the rubber particles with average diameter of 2 μm are dispersed in the epoxy matrix. The copolymer without the pendant epoxy group, prepared from BA and vinylbenzyl methoxyethyl ether, was ineffective as a modifier, indicating that the reaction of the pendant epoxide with the epoxy matrix resulted in good interfacial adhesion between the rubber particles and the matrix, and in the increased toughness. The epoxide-containing copolymers with 55 or 86% of BA units were also insufficient modifiers. The addition of the former yielded cured resins with homogeneous structure, whereas that of the latter resulted in macroscopic phase separation between the rubber and the epoxy resin.
