Notes: Abstract  In the interlaboratory study programme "ILS Coal Characterisation", eight interlaboratory studies were organised based on the ISO standards for coal analysis. The use of blind samples in each round allows comparability of measurement results between rounds to be assessed. Based on the results, it could be demonstrated that the vast majority of the measurement results of the laboratories were traceable to results obtained in previous rounds of this programme. The hypothesis has been formulated that the combined standard uncertainty obtained from an interlaboratory study is equal to the reproducibility standard deviation. Whether the reproducibility can be used as the basis for the certification depends on whether the interlaboratory study includes all effects to be taken into account for establishing an uncertainty statement.

Notes: Abstract  Working group 5 of EuraChem Nederland has developed a framework for the implementation of reference materials in analytical chemistry. In this discussed paper, the framework is proposed as a tool for the development of standard operation procedures (SOPs) in laboratories. The implementation of (certified) reference materials in these SOPs is of major importance in establishing comparability and traceability in measurement results, which in turn play a crucial role in measurement in support of trade, environmental issues, and characterisation of materials. Recent developments in the field of uncertainty analysis require the application of reference materials. It is recognised that the calculation of the combined measurement uncertainty becomes almost impossible without the use of certified reference materials with a stated uncertainty.

Notes: Abstract From results obtained in an interlaboratory study program, performance characteristics for the determination of major and minor elements in coal ash have been established. For several parameters, a functional relationship between the content (grand mean) and the reproducibility and reproducibility standard deviations could be established: Fe2O3, MnO2, Na2O, K2O, MgO, CaO, and SO3 content in ash. In the interlaboratory study program, it was verified that the data between rounds were comparable. This verification was carried out using blind samples.

Notes: Abstract Uncertainties of four enzyme-CRMs that have recently been certified in a co-operation between the IRMM and the International Federation for Clinical Chemistry were estimated. Estimation was based on the sum of the uncertainties of characterization, homogeneity and stability. Data from the certification collaborative study were used to estimate laboratory uncertainties, which form the basis for the uncertainty of characterization. Estimations for the uncertainty of homogeneity were derived from classical homogeneity studies. The estimations of uncertainty of stability caused the most difficulties. Realistic uncertainties fitting the needs of customers while being derived from measurement data based on theoretical considerations were obtained.
