Notes: [Auszug] The physiological race survey covering all the Australian States has been curtailed recently, while the differential series is being 'pure lined'; but fifteen races have been identified to date using Flor's original set of differential varieties and two additional Argentine varieties. A race ...

Notes: Abstract Transmission electron microscopy has been used to study the growth mechanism of silicon in modified aluminium-silicon eutectic alloys. In agreement with earlier studies a high density of thin {1 1 1 } faults was observed in silicon modified by relatively large amounts of sodium or strontium. High-resolution microscopy showed that these faults were a mixture of thin twins and stacking faults, the inter-fault spacing being at least ten times the twin width. Because modified silicon is thought to grow by the twin re-entrant edge mechanism, the thin twins were examined in relation to the shape of the modified silicon dendrites and the solidified growth interfaces. It was concluded that the thin faults were not deformation twins resulting from either thermal contraction stresses or mechanical grinding during specimen preparation. No direct evidence was found to support the re-entrant edge mode of growth in modified silicon. Instead it is suggested that the interface may appear macroscopically non-faceted, as in the more general Lateral Microscopic Growth mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this work was to explore the influence of various types of temperature fluctuations on the microstructural stability of the Cd-Zn eutectic which is treated as a model for certain potential high-temperature, turbine-blade materials. The main conclusion was that the holding period at the highest cycle temperature had a significant, and previously unrecognized, influence upon the rate of microstructural degradation. The mechanism of degradation is discussed and it is noted that considerably more work is needed in this area if such alloys are to fulfill their potential applicability.

Notes: Abstract To investigate the range of “coupled” eutectic growth in Al-Co alloys from 1 to 4 wt% Co and Al-Ni alloys from 5 to 10 wt% Ni directional solidification, using rates from 0.8×10−2 cm/sec to 10.6×10−2 cm/sec, was employed. Both alloy systems exhibited coupled zones skewed towards the hypereutectic compositions. Fully eutectic structures were obtained in the ranges Al-1 wt% Co to Al-3 wt% Co and Al-5.7 wt% Ni to Al-9.2 wt% Ni. The off-eutectic alloys which exhibit a fully eutectic structure behave as reinforcing composite materials, with the tensile strength and microhardness increasing as the volume fraction of the strengthening phase increases.

Notes: Abstract The location of the monovariant eutectic trough extending from the binary eutectic Cu-Cu2Mg into the Cu-Mg-Ni ternary alloy system has been established for alloys containing up to 25 at.% Ni. Liquidus and solidus temperatures along this eutectic trough were determined by thermal analysis. Microscopic and electron microprobe analyses confirm the existence of a peritectic reaction in the Cu2Mg-Ni2Mg quasibinary system and establish its participation in the ternary system. The foregoing, together with data from earlier literature, allow the equilibrium phase relationships for the entire Cu-Mg-Ni ternary system to be estimated.

Notes: Polyrethanes, based on 2-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)methylammoni]ethylstearylphosphate, alone or together with 1,4-butanediol as the chain extender, poly(isoprene) diol and 4,4′-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate, were prepared. These segmented phospholipid polyurethanes were characterized by IR, elemental analyses, and gel permeation chromatography. The polyurethane, with both phospholipid diol and 1,4-butanediol as the chain extender, was further investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, plasma contact and clotting time. An x-ray diffraction measurement for the polymer shows a intense scattering at 79.3 Å corresponding to the length of soft segments, which is hydrophobic poly(isoprene), and a weak diffuse scattering at 5.1 Å corresponding to the distance between the hydrophobic poly (isoprene) layers. The hemocompatibilities of the polymer were evaluated by platelet rich plasma contacting studies and by scanning electron microscopy using medical grade poly(vinyl chloride) as control. The hot-pressed films of the polymer exhibit a favorable surface in terms of platelet adhesion, and the morphology of adhered platelets undergoes to a relatively lower degree of variation compared to poly(vinyl chloride). Moreover, the clotting time of the polymer in contact with human platelet rich plasma was 220, 100, and 86 s for the phospholipid-based polyurethane, poly(vinyl chloride), and glass, respectively. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
