Notes: We compare the field screening behavior of quantum-confined Stark effect modulator structures where the GaInAsP/InP heterojunction is in the intrinsic (standard structure) or in the doped regions (modified structure) at working wavelengths of 1.55 and 1.3 μm. The modified structures are obtained by expanding the GaInAsP confinement layers into the p-doped and n-doped regions without changing the total intrinsic layer thickness. The effectiveness of the InP heterobarriers for the holes on the p-side and for the electrons on the n-side is thereby lowered. A significant reduction of field screening for the modified structures is achieved. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract— Partly purified chromaffin granules were incubated in vitro with Ca2+ (with trace amounts of 45Ca2+) in concentrations ranging from 4 μm to 1 mm. After incubation the granules were washed with media containing EDTA and then subjected to density gradient centrifugation (1.3 to 2.0 m-sucrose solutions) in order to characterize the particles which had taken up 45Ca2+. By using marker enzymes and various inhibitors of Ca2+ uptake into such cell particles as mitochondria it was established that under the conditions of the experiments chromaffin granules took up Ca2+ from the incubation medium. To characterize this uptake a simplified density gradient procedure was tested and found to be suitable. The uptake of Ca2+ into chromaffin granules was strongly dependent on temperature. It was not activated by ATP. The uptake was linear up to 10 min. At high calcium concentrations (above 200 μm) the rate of uptake levelled off. The uptake at 37°C was 1 nmol Ca2+/mg protein/min at a Ca2+ concentration of 500 μm. Mg2+ had no influence on Ca2+ uptake, whereas Sr2+ (1 mm) inhibited it. The methods established in this study should prove useful for a further characterization of this Ca2+ uptake into chromaffin granules which is likely to represent a useful model for the Ca2+ uptake occurring in the intact gland.

Notes: The effect of an increased frequency of administration of sodium cromoglycate (SCG) was studied in twenty-four asthmatic children who had previously responded poorly to 3–4 capsules per day. Six out of seven children who were assessed clinically alone improved when their dose was raised to 6 capsules daily. When a diary score and bronchodilator consumption were recorded, the more frequent administration of SCG gave significantly better results in eleven of seventeen children. However, only five of the twelve children given peak flow meters to use twice daily at home showed objective improvement. At the beginning of the trial four children were on systemic corticosteroid treatment and two of them were weaned off while on the raised dosage of SCG. The other two were not improved and were treated with a corticosteroid aerosol, beclomethasone diproprionate (Becotide), as were two other SCG failures. There was no clear correlation between the duration of protection given by SCG on exercise testing and the clinical response in this trial. The fact that only four out of twenty-four children who previously did not respond satisfactorily to SCG eventually needed corticosteroids, suggests that the increased frequency of administration may reduce the proportion of children failing to respond to SCG.

Notes: The effectiveness of inhaled versus oral metaproterenol in preventing exercise-induced asthma (EIA) was studied.Inhaled metaproterenol given 10 min before the exercise significantly reduced the degree of EIA in a group of twenty-four patients, and in 75% of them completely prevented it. The mean percentage decrease in FEV1 was 6-5% with the inhaler and 30.1%, with placebo. When inhaled 1 hr before the exercise, metaproterenol was still better than placebo but its effectiveness was considerably lower. Metaproterenol tablets had a slight protective effect given I hr before, and none when administered 2 hr before exercise. There was no correlation between the protective effect against EIA and the bronchodilating effect obtained before exercise. Metaproterenol administered by metered-dose inhaler is a very effective prophylactic medication against clinically troublesome EIA, while metaproterenol tablets should not be recommended for this purpose.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Recent work byHuehns et al. gives good evidence that the two prefoetal blood pigments Gower 1 and Gower 2 are normal hemoglobins in the early development of human embryos. These two embryonic hemoglobins with a slow anodic mobility similar to HbC are regulary detected in embryos with a crown-rump length under 10 cm. Chemical properties, polypeptide chain composition and occurrence in the newborn are dicussed by the authors. In this paper the existence of human embryonic hemoglobin is confirmed by starch-gel electrophoresis in blood samples of four young embryos with a crown-rump length ranging from 2.5 to 5.5 cm. In comparative studies embryonic hemoglobins were also found in cow embryos with a crown-rump length between 1 and 7 cm.
Notes: Zusammenfassung Die vonHuehns u.
