Notes: Summary A 77-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was treated with low-dose methotrexate (7.5–15 mg per week). After 15 months a diagnosis of urothelial carcinoma of the bladder was made; after a further 6 months pneumonitis and pancytopenia developed. The patient died due to massive pulmonary hemorrhage. A malignant teratoma was diagnosed in a 65-year-old asthmatic man 16 months after initiation of methotrexate therapy (15 mg per week). The patient died 4 months later due to fulminant progression of the neoplasm. A third malignant neoplasm (dermal squamous cell carcinoma) was seen in a 64-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis after 13 months treatment with 7.5 mg methotrexate per week. These three cases, while obviously not proving a causal relationship between long-term treatment with low-dose methotrexate and development of malignant neoplasm, do call for stringent treatment criteria, close surveillance, and prospective studies.

Notes: Summary Hanford miniature pigs have been used as experimental animals in our laboratory for 5 years. Main object of the operative procedures, developped during this time, was the chronic implantation of catheters for injection and infusion or withdrawal of body fluids (blood, gastric juice, urine) without stress in unaesthetized animals. Thus a method for simultaneous catheterisation of a mesenteric vein and vena portae is described which allows besides the already mentioned possibilities the measuring of portal venous pressure and portal blood flow. Physiological data observed in these animals are reported.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung An Hanford-Miniaturschweinen wurde die In vivo-Wirkung des von uns aus Schweinehypophysen gewonnenen lipidmobilisierenden Peptid A und seiner weniger gereinigten Vorstufe Fraktion J in einer Dosierung von 100 µg/kg i.v. untersucht: Peptid A (FFS-Anstieg um 2,13 ± 0,2 mval/l) war stärker wirksam als Fraktion J (1,25 ± 0,23 mval/l).
Notes: Summary The effect of pig pituitary lipidmobilizing Peptide A and its precursor fraction J was studied in Hanford minipigs. Within 5 min after the intravenous injection of 100 µ/kg of the polypeptides free fatty acids and free glycerol were elevated; the maxima were obtained 60 respectively 30 min p.i. Peptide A was more active than fraction J (2.13 ± 0.21 respectively 1.25 ± 0.23 mval/l FFS increment compared to the initial values). Glucose was significantly elevated 210 min after the injection of either peptide, but peptide A produced a decrease of glucose 60 min p.i. when FFS were maximal.

Notes: Abstract The suitability of local temperature measurements by cw Raman spectroscopy for the CH4/H2 CVD system has been established. The temperature profiles in a model reactor were derived from H2 pure rotational lines and from hot bands of thev 1 vibrational band of CH4. Experimental results are presented for substrate temperatures of 773 K and of 1473 K. High accuracy of measurement and excellent agreement with theoretical solutions for the temperature field within the reactor were found.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Unwanted effects of beta-receptor blocking agents can be divided into three categories: 1. Those arising specifically from the pharmacologic, i.e. beta-blocking action. 2. Side effects not directly (or not with certainty) related to beta-blockade. 3. Adverse and potentially specific reactions to individual beta-blocking agents. Category 1 covers the majority of adverse effects (heart failure, severe bradycardia and hypotension, arterial insufficiency, increased airways resistance, gastrointestinal symptoms, hypoglycemia). These can largely be avoided by proper selection and preparation of patients. Category 2 covers cutaneous reactions (rashes, alopecia, pruritus), purpura (thrombocytopenic and nonthrombocytopenic) etc. as well as side effects attributable to the central nervous system (antianxiety effects, nightmares etc.). In the third category the “oculo-cutaneous syndrome” associated with practolol is discussed.
