Notes: Summary Background Penile squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) may occur on pre-existing lesions of lichen sclerosus (LS). However, the prevalence of histological changes of LS in penile SCC is not well established. Moreover, mucosal oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are sometimes detected in penile SCC, but have not been systematically sought in LS-associated penile SCC. Objectives To establish the prevalence of LS histological changes and of mucosal oncogenic HPV in a series of patients with penile SCC. Methods Consecutive cases of histologically proven penile SCC from a single university hospital over a 14-year period were retrospectively selected and reviewed. Histological signs of LS were systematically sought. HPV was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of DNA from paraffin-embedded skin samples using general primers GP5+/GP6+ (allowing detection of mucosal HPV) and oncogenic type 16-, 18-, 31- and 33-specific primers. Results Eighteen cases of penile SCC were found. The mean ± SD age of patients at diagnosis was 67·3 (14·5 years). In eight of 18 (44%) cases, SCC was associated with histological features of LS. Seventeen skin biopsy specimens of SCC (nine without and eight with LS histology) were subjected to PCR amplification for HPV. Mucosal HPV was detected in six of them (35%). Five of nine SCCs without histological features of LS were positive for mucosal HPV: three with HPV type 16 and two with only general primers. In contrast, all eight SCCs associated with LS were negative for oncogenic HPV types, although one was positive with general primers. Conclusions Penile SCC seems to be frequently associated with LS histological changes. As with vulval SCC, we found that non-LS-associated penile SCC tended to be frequently associated with oncogenic HPV infection, whereas LS-associated penile SCC was not. Larger series are needed to confirm this association.

Notes: Summary Parenteral injections of a chemical carcinogen, N-nitroso-N methylurethane, produces in the lung of mice foci of atypical proliferation associated with intense alveolar collapse. The morphology of these lesions is presented, then their metabolic features as determined by histochemical methods. The activity of hydrolases especially of alkaline phosphatases, appears to be important, particularly in the capillary circulation.

Notes: Summary The authors studied the light and ultrastructural morphology of a malignant hemangioendothelioma of the spleen, which rapidly spread to the liver and bone marrow. An important phagocytic activity, especially erythrophagocytic, of the tumor cells was observed as well as multiple capillary thromboses. The stage of general spread was marked by the appearance of hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, fragmented red blood cells, and a deficit in coagulation factors. The thrombosis was considered to be responsible for the consumption coagulopathy. The hemolytic anemia may be explained by two associated mechanisms: intravascular hemolysis (microangiopathic hemolytic anemia), and erythrophagocytosis by the tumor cells and by the reticuloendothelial system of the red blood cells made fragile by their passage through the tumor.

Notes: Summary The authors report a study of myositis ossificans circumscripta in a 62 year old man. The histopathology is briefly described; the histochemistry, histoenzymology and ultrastructure of the 3 types of ossification seen in this lesion (membranous, enchondral and osteoblastic ossification), are reported in detail. The reactions for proteins were positive, and especially those for non-sulfated and sulfated acid M.P.S., and for alkaline phosphatase, esterase, dehydrogenase and leucine-aminopeptidase, in the ossifiable connective matrix. The A.T.P.ase activity was much stronger within the mineralized area of the bone. The conditions of the ossification appeared to be normal, but the ultrastructural study revealed an abnormal character of the collagen of the ossifiable mesenchyme. The collagen fiber was short, its period of 280 to 350 Angstroems, indicating a structural modification, which is possibly genetic and familial in origin. Such a factor may account for the pathological ossification.

Notes: Abstract A 23-year-old man presented with a 2-week history of intracranial hypertension. CT showed a large, nonenhancing cerebellar mass with surrounding calcification and displacement of the fourth ventricle. MRI revealed a septate lesion, with low signal on T1-weighted and high signal on T2-weighted images. The cerebellar tonsils were displaced below the foramen magnum and there was associated syringomyelia. The MRI features were characteristic of Lhermitte-Duclos (LD) disease (dysplastic gangliocytoma) and the diagnosis was confirmed following surgery. In this case, we emphasise the usefulness of MRI in the diagnosis of LD disease and consider the possible pathogenesis of the associated syringomyelia.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The pulmonary tumours induced in Swiss mice by NMUR seem to be constituted for the most part by cells closely related to the granular pneumocytes (pneumocytes II ou B). Other rarer cells, of epithelial bronchiolar aspect, may take part in the proliferation. The ultrastructural study of tumoral cells suggest that their secretory functions are disturbed. The origin of the crystalline intratumoral structures is discussed, as well as their possible relationship with the production of surfactant. The peritumoral areas are characterized by a dense interstitial flbrosis in which the collagen fibers are associated with an elastoid substance.

Notes: Summary The authors define a framework for the classification and pathogenesis of trophic ulcers in giant incisional hernias. These ulcers are the result of ischemic changes; they are always situated at the vertex of the herniation and their presence complicate treatment for they are always infected. The management of the ulcer and of the hernia are two distinct concerns which must be considered separately.
