Notes: [Auszug] WE have observed that certain liquids, for example, xylene (a mixture of ortho-, para- and meta-), ethyl ether, ethyl alcohol and benzene show very small yet distinct decreases in the values of their dielectric constants when they are flowing through condenser plates of small separations. Notes: This paper reports an automatic instrument developed for characterization of optical waveguides. A specially designed waveguide excitation unit offers a flexible platform for measurement of optical waveguide characteristics like number of propagating modes, mode field intensity distribution, the refractive index profiles, waveguide geometry, attenuation, and dispersion. Further, the availability of attachments like filters, polarizers, chopper, intensity profiler, and CCD camera make the instrument flexible enough for a variety of other experiments also. The instrument is PC controlled and assisted by user friendly menu-driven software. A large number of waveguides have been analyzed using the setup. These results are also presented in the paper. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Intracavity spatial filtering in a copper vapor laser is demonstrated to achieve low divergence output beam. The output beam characteristics were monitored. The average beam divergence of 0.45 mrad (∼two times the diffraction limit) was achieved. Temporal pulse width of 3-ns full width at half maximum was obtained.

Notes: Use of a double thyratron pulse modulator in a large-bore copper vapor laser is demonstrated. Design of the laser consisting of a discharge tube of 70-mm diameter and 1500-mm length is discussed. The laser gave 55-W output power at 4.8-kHz repetition rate using neon as the buffer gas with 9.1-kW modulator switching of electrical power. The efficiency of the laser was about 0.6%.

Notes: A linear stability analysis of the viscous fingering of miscible non-Newtonian flow displacements in a rectilinear Hele-Shaw cell is presented. The shear-thinning character of the non-Newtonian fluid is described using the Carreau model which involves two rheological parameters De and n. Flows where either the displacing or displaced phase has a shear-thinning behavior are examined and compared with those of Newtonian flows. It is found that the shear-thinning character of the non-Newtonian fluid has an important effect on the flow instability. In particular, a flow where the driving fluid is shear-thinning is always more unstable than its Newtonian counterpart. For this flow, the maximum growth rate and the spectrum of unstable wave numbers are larger than in the Newtonian case which suggests that more ramified structures will develop as the finger instability grows. On the other hand, when the displaced fluid is non-Newtonian, a stronger shear-thinning rheological behavior leads in general to a less unstable flow. The mechanisms responsible for the changes in the flow instability are explained in terms of the different sources contributing to the generation of the vorticity disturbance. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Unstable resonator lasers with a scraper mirror as output coupler suffers from diffraction effects associated with uniformly illuminated aperture. The near-field intensity distribution is annular in shape with minima at the center. In this communication, a modified resonator is suggested in which the resonator is folded and the scraper mirror is replaced by a partially transmitting mirror to provide the output coupling. The modified resonator is applied to a copper vapor laser. Observed near-field distribution is uniform across the beam and the intensity of the diffraction rings in the far-field profiles is considerably reduced.

Notes: A method which combines thermal and plasma dissociation of a methane/hydrogen gas mixture for low-pressure chemical vapor deposition of diamond is described. A hot, thin-walled, refractory metal cathode is used to generate a high-current, low-voltage discharge. The substrates are located on the anode and immersed in the plasma emanating from the cathode tip. No auxiliary substrate heating is employed. Polycrystalline diamond particles and films are obtained on silicon (100) and molybdenum substrates at growth rates of 1–3 μm/h.

Notes: We report development of single-layer, highly durable, pinhole-free, abrasion-resistant, chemically inert "black coating'' suitable for use as a contrast enhancement layer for liquid- crystal display devices. The single layer is a diamond-like carbon coating that has a high extinction coefficient and appears black due to optical absorption. The optical transmittance is less than 2% over the visible spectrum, and the reflectance is about 20%. Furthermore, this coating is easy to deposit onto large-area substrates at high deposition rates. The coating is sufficiently durable, electrically insulating, and chemically compatible with liquid-crystal display materials. Its hardness exceeds that of SiC (9+ on Mohs scale), and it is resistant to abrasion and most common solvents and acids. It exhibits good adhesion to glass, silicon, metal, and oxide substrates. Films of this material have been used to provide an increased contrast enhancement ratio in liquid-crystal displays. Details on the synthesis of these films are presented. Also, data on the optical and mechanical properties of these films as well as their use as contrast enhancement layers for liquid-crystal displays are presented.
