Notes: Abstract  Repeated subsampling or a hierarchical design of experiments combined with an analysis of variance (ANOVA) is demonstrated to be a useful tool in the determination of uncertainty components in amount-of-substance measurements. With the reference material of human serum as investigated here for total cholesterol, besides several in-laboratory sources of uncertainty, a vial-to-vial effect which can be regarded as an off-laboratory source was found to be significant. This knowledge might be essential when the material is used for calibration and for the self-assessment of a laboratory.

Notes: Ultrametric inter-object distances found by hierarchical clustering may be used to generate and appropriate constellation of points in a plane. A configuration of points which reproduce the ultrametric distances in a low-dimensional space as closely as possible can be found by Torgerson's method of multidimensional scaling. The resulting display supports the cognition of clusters very well, and for this purpose it seems to be superior to, for instance, the frequently applied principal components display. In certain situations dedrograms are expected to become simpler to interpret when such complementary ‘cluster display’ is also consulted. An example from analytical chemistry is presented.

Notes: Summary The elements Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn have been determined in wheat, barley and oats by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry after wet mineralization, mineralization by dry ashing or mineralization in a PTFE bomb. The procedures are described. The results were evaluated by BASIC programs for one dimensional data evaluation, by principal components plot and by multidimensional analysis of variance. The influences of mineralization procedures on the results are low compared with the different contents in the three cereals particularly for Cd, but also for Pb and Zn. There are no significant differences, in the Cu content.

Notes: This work addresses the problem of signal resolution by partial least-squares regression (PLS) for differential pulse stripping voltammograms. The performance of PLS is demonstrated for an example of calibration with mixtures of two analytes (Tl+ and Pb2+) with strongly overlapping voltammograms. The accuracy of the determination of concentrations for validation mixtures was found to be considerably higher with PLS than with simple evaluation using currents observed at two potentials (requiring resolution of a system of two linear equations with two unknowns). Hence, PLS is recommended for computer-assisted, on-line voltammetric analysis of multicomponent systems.
