Notes: [Auszug] Late Palaeozoic palaeomagnetic data are voluminous, largely because of the ubiquity of easily measured red beds and igneous rocks. Within these data there are systematic discrepancies and it has been suggested that the Permian geomagnetic field did not perfectly correspond to an axial dipole. ...

Notes: Abstract Tandamine hydrochloride, a thiopyranoindole, was more active than desmethylimipramine in inhibiting the tyramine pressor response after single oral doses in human volunteers. When compared with a placebo, tandamine was found to possess significant anticholinergic activity, to reduce appetite and to produce sedation. Compared with clomipramine, it caused a smaller inhibition of 5-HT but a more marked inhibition of dopamine uptake into human platelets. Further clinical and pharmacological studies with tandamine may help to elucidate the respective roles of different monoamines in depression, sedation and appetite.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the Hilbert-space analogue of a result of Huang, that all the methods in the Huang class generate the same sequence of points when applied to a quadratic functional with exact linear searches, is established. The convergence of a class of direct prediction methods based on some work of Dixon is then proved, and these methods are then applied to some control problems. Their performance is found to be comparable with methods involving exact linear searches.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the convergence of variable-metric methods without line searches (direct prediction methods) applied to quadratic functionals on a Hilbert space is established. The methods are then applied to certain control problems with both free endpoints and fixed endpoints. Computational results are reported and compared with earlier results. The methods discussed here are found to compare favorably with earlier methods involving line searches and with other direct prediction quasi-Newton methods.

Notes: An improved gas comparison pycnometer has been developed, based on precise differential pressure measurements coupled with a sample volume compensator. Using helium gas, volumes of solid and powdered explosives can be measured to a precision approaching one part in lo4. Coupled with a precise mass measurement, these volumes allow densities with an uncertainty of ∼± 0.002 g/ml to be inferred. Measurements performed on various explosives have allowed assessment of the purity and homogeneity of individual samples. It is also possible to infer void percentage or porosity in pressed explosive pellets.
