    Notes: Broiler carcasses were sampled by excision of the neck skin with the aid of a special clamp, and by swabbing of the breast skin. Samples from both methods were compared for bacteriological evaluation of carcasses by standard plate counts and by two commercial miniature systems (Millipore and Easicult-TTC). In experiment 1, the excised neck skin method showed higher counts than the breast swab method on carcasses stored at 1.5°C for 7–18 days, but not on day of processing; counts did not differ significantly as a function of culturing and counting system (only standard plating and Millipore were compared) on carcasses stored 7–18 days, but were higher by standard plating than by Millipore on day of processing. In experiment 2, counts did not differ significantly as a function of the two sampling methods or three culturing methods, or between counts on 0 and 7 days of storage of carcasses at 1.5°C. The neck skin excise method combined with a miniaturized culturing system was the fastest means to measure the general bacteriological condition of fresh or stored broiler carcasses.

    Notes: Abstract An investigation was made into an illness episode characterized by cholinesterase depression and cholinergic symptoms reported among 118 field workers harvesting grapes treated with Torak® (dialifor) and Zolone® (phosalone) in a vineyard near Madera, California. Dialifor had been applied at the rate of 1.0 pound per acre in 30 gallons of water between 15 and 40 days earlier using a Kinkelder air blast sprayer. Dissipation studies in an earlier study in Soledad, California, using concentrated spray resulted in initial dislodgeable residues of 2.1 ug/cm2 with a half-life of 14 to 15 days. A similar level of dislodgeable residue resulted at the time of application in the vineyard at Madera. Dislodgeable residues as high as 0.7 ug/cm2 were encountered by workers at the time of entry with most residues being in the range of 0.11 to 0.45 ug/cm2. Residue of dialifor on the foliage in 36 other grape vineyards in the San Joaquin Valley were determined at the time of harvest and were shown to be 0.13 ug/cm2 or less. In four of the 36 vineyards, blood was obtained from workers harvesting grapes. None of the field workers had blood cholinesterase values outside control values. The investigation indicated that with initial dislodgeable residues of dialifor as high as 2.3 ug/cm2, a period of at least 65 days is required before a possibly safe level of something less than 0.06 ug/cm2 is reached. The analysis of the residues in the 36 other vineyards indicated that the initial deposits and/ or the half-life of dialifor varied considerably throughout the San Joaquin Valley. Because of this variation, the use of reentry intervals for dialifor may require replacement by on-site residue tests prior to entry. The results indicated that phosalone residues were not responsible for the illness in the field workers.

    Notes: Abstract An investigation has been made of multiple transverse cracking in glass fibre epoxy cross-ply laminates. Four laminates of differing transverse ply thicknesses were investigated. Transverse crack spacing was found to decrease with increasing applied stress and decreasing transverse ply thickness. Very close agreement has been found between the experimental results and a multiple cracking theory based on shear lag analysis in which the plies remain essentially elastically bonded. In these composites a small modulus change is observed at a strain lower than that at which cracking initiated. This phenomenon is associated with a visual, under some circumstances reversible, whitening effect.

    Notes: Abstract It has been established that the optimum degree of mechanical property enhancement by fibre reinforcement of a typical thermoplastic material (polyamide 6.6) is achieved if comparatively long fibres are used, the fibre length required being determined by the properties of the interface between the fibre and the thermoplastic matrix. The extent of stiffness improvement at low strains is described by simple modifications to the law of mixtures to allow for fibre orientation and length. The strength enhancement is limited by an embrittlement effect which reduces the strain to fracture as the stiffness of the composite is improved. The cause of this effect has been identified as matrix crack formation at the ends of the reinforcing fibres. At strains of between 0.5% and 1.0%, according to fibre type, length andV f, cracks form at the tips of the longest fibres aligned in the straining direction. Subsequently as the strain is increased more cracks form progressively at the ends of shorter and/or more misaligned fibres. It has been shown that initially this cracking can be accommodated by load transfer to adjacent fibres which “bridge” the cracked region. Final failure occurs when the extent of cracking across the weakest section reaches a critical level when the surrounding fibres and matrix can no longer support the increasing load.

    Notes: Immobilization of an enzyme within an insoluble material permeable to substrate can change the apparent behavior of the enzyme. In particular, external mass transfer and intraparticle diffusion effects can significantly influence the dependence of observed reaction rate on operating parameters such as temperature and pH. This analysis shows that, under very general conditions, the influence of diffusion alone is to diminish the sensitivity of the observed rate to any parameter that is uniform throughout the catalyst particle. However, the optimal value of the parameter is not changed because of intrapellet diffusional effects.

    Notes: Apparent kinetics and pH-activity relationships have been determined for glucoamylase and glucose oxidase immobilized on activated carbon using a diimide method. Reaction rate expressions of Michaelis-Menten form adequately approximate the observed kinetics for both enzyme preparations over the ranges of substrate concentrations considered. Influences of external mass transfer as well as substrate and product adsorption on interpretation of the experimental data have been examined. Immobilization of a glucose oxidase-gluconolactonase enzyme mixture has been found to increase substantially the ratio of gluconolactonase to glucose oxidase activities compared to the corresponding activity ratio for these enzymes in solution.

    Notes: Abstract Specimens of 90° cross-ply glass-reinforced epoxy resins were tested in tension parallel to the direction of reinforcement in the outer plies. The thickness of the inner ply was varied and cracking constraint was observed at small thicknesses. At large inner-ply thicknesses the specimens showed uniform transverse cracking, and at very low inner-ply thicknesses this transverse cracking could be suppressed completely prior to total specimen failure. Fracture toughness values were determined on transverse unidirectional laminates of the same volume fraction. It was found that the cracking constraint observed can be accounted for, using the theory of Aveston and Kelly.
