    Notes: A K-band receiver using cooled high-electron mobility-transistor (HEMT) amplifiers was developed at the Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO). Remarkable reduction of receiver noise temperature Trec was obtained when it was cooled down to cryogenic temperature. The lowest Trec of 75 K was obtained at 23.4 GHz. This low noise characteristic reveals that the cooled HEMT amplifier is promising as a sensitive receiver for radio astronomical observations.

    Notes: The paramagnetic scattering cross section of the anisotropic metallic ferromagnet MnP has been measured up to the zone boundaries along the [100] and [010] directions perpendicular to the easy magnetization axis. The spectral shape functions in both directions are well fitted to a Lorentzian form at T=TC (290.5 K), 1.03TC, and 1.20TC except those close to the zone boundaries. Near TC the linewidth along [010] follows the dynamical scaling prediction for the isotropic ferromagnet Γ(q)∝q2.5. On the contrary, a unique q dependence, Γ(q)∝q3.2, along [100] was observed. However, these q dependencies deviate at small q(q〈0.1 A−1 along [100] and q〈0.02 A−1 along [010]), suggesting the existence of a residual linewidth of Γ0∼0.02 meV at q=0.

    Notes: Summary To elucidate the role of class II major histocompatibility complex antigen expression on pancreatic B cells in the development of diabetes in the non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse, indirect immunofluorescence was employed for I-A staining on Bouin-fixed pancreas sections of NOD mice (I-A of which was reported as d), B10.GD (I-A, d), BALB/c (I-A, d) and C3H/He (I-A, k). I-A positive islets were observed in all NOD mice examined. Positive reaction was detected in islets both with and without lymphocytic infiltrations. Double staining with anti-insulin, glucagon, somatostatin or pan creatic polypeptide antibodies revealed that I-A positive cells corresponded with insulin cells, while other types of pancreatic islet cells were virtually negative for I-A. Weaker staining was seen in islets of B10.GD and, to a lesser extent, in those of BALB/c mice. C3H/He mouse islet cells showed no I-A expression. These results demonstrated the expression of I-A antigens on pancreatic B cells in the NOD mouse.

    Notes: Summary In the colonic epithelium of the chicken, glycoconjugates have been studied by means of selected histochemical methods of light and electron microscopy. According to the results obtained, most of the colonic goblet cells contained acidic and neutral glycoconjugates with sulphate and vicinal diol groupings, α-D-mannose and α-D-glucose residues and sialic acid-galactose dimers. These goblet cells were found to undergo changes in histochemical reactivity during upward migration along the crypts; α-D-mannose and α-D-glucose residues and terminal sialic acidgalactose dimers increased in amount. The striated border of the colonic columnar cells has, likewise, been found to contain such glycoconjugates as were similar in reactivity to those of the goblet cells. The histophysiological significances of glycoconjugates involved in the chicken colonic epithelium have been discussed with special reference to the functional activities of the carbohydrates.

    Notes: Abstract The neuronal mechanisms of neurotensin (NT)-induced catalepsy were investigated in mice. NT administered intracerebroventricularly (ICV 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 μg) produced catalepsy in a dose-dependent fashion. A significant effect was observed at 2.0 μg and a maximal effect 2–3 h after injection. The NT-induced catalepsy was inhibited by pretreatment with atropine, trihexyphenidyl or biperiden (each drug, 0.8–5.0 mg/kg, IP), anticholinergic drugs, and L-DOPA (100, 200 mg/kg, IP). However, the catalepsy was not significantly antagonized by p-chlorphenylalanine (300 mg/kg×3 days, IP) or methysergide (5, 10 mg/kg, IP), antiserotonergic drugs, and was not potentiated by the GABAergic drugs, aminooxyacetic acid (25 mg/kg, IP) or muscimol (1 mg/kg, IP). In addition, the NT-induced catalepsy was dose-dependently reduced by antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (0.8–10 mg/kg, IP) and tripelennamine (0.4–5.0 mg/kg, IP) and was potentiated after treatment with histidine (250, 500 mg/kg, IP), a precursor of brain histamine. NT-induced catalepsy was also reduced by ICV pretreatment with diphenhydramine (1–5 μg/rat), a H1 antagonist, but not by cimetidine (5, 20 μg/rat), a H2 antagonist. These findings suggest that the catalepsy induced by NT may involve not only central cholinergic and dopaminergic mechanisms but also a histaminergic mechanism mediated via H1-histamine receptors, and seems to differ from the catalepsy induced by neuroleptics.

    Notes: Summary Secretory glycoconjugates in the epithelium of the goat prostate were investigated with various electron microscopical histochemical methods that involved periodic acid—thiocarbohydrazide—silver proteinate, colloidal gold-labelled lectin and related procedures. The three types of cells in the epithelium previously differentiated with the light microscope were substantiated: mucus-producing cells, protein-secreting cells and cells intermediate between both types. These three cell types contained varying amounts of neutral glycoconjugates; the histochemical nature of these carbohydrates was determined with particular emphasis upon the histophysiological functions of the accessory sex glands.
