Notes: A compound-semiconductor device simulator, in which deep levels in the semi-insulating layers can be taken into account, has been developed. By using this simulator, the electrical properties for the semi-insulating InP buried heterostructure laser diodes were investigated. The leakage current, without passing through the active region, was found to be small when the trap density in the semi-insulating InP layers is more than 3×1015 cm−3 and less than 1×1016 cm−3. This simulator will be a useful tool in predicting the semi-insulating properties of electrical and optical semiconductor devices.

Notes: A series of experiments focused on high neutron yield has been performed with the Gekko-XII green laser system [Nucl. Fusion 27, 19 (1987)]. Deuterium–tritium (DT) neutron yield of 1013 and pellet gain of 0.2% have been achieved. Based on the experimental data from more than 70 irradiations, the scaling laws of the neutron yield and the related physical quantities have been studied. Comparison of the experimental neutron yield with that obtained by using a one-dimensional fluid code has led to the conclusion that most of the neutrons produced in the stagnation phase of the computation are not observed in the experiment because of fuel–pusher mixing, possibly induced by the Rayleigh–Taylor instability. The coupling efficiency and ablation pressure have been calculated using the ion temperature measured experimentally. A coupling efficiency of 5.5% and an ablation pressure of 50 Mbar have been obtained.

Notes: High-quality single-crystal molybdenum (Mo) fabricated by a secondary recrystallization method has been polished with a new polishing technique. The superpolished surface of the Mo single crystal has a surface roughness of 3.5 A(ring) rms. This superpolished single-crystal Mo has been used for a high-power electron beam pumped argon excimer laser (λ=126 nm) as a cavity mirror. Peak output power of more than 3 MW has been achieved without any damage to the mirror surface.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study is to develop measuring methods for the thermal diffusivity, the specific heat capacity, and the density of molten salts, as well as to measure these properties of mixtures of alkaline carbonate salts. The thermal diffusivity is measured by the stepwise heating method. The sample salt is poured into a thin container, and as a result, a three-layered cell is formed. The thermal diffusivity is obtained from the ratio of temperature rises at different times measured at the rear surface of the cell when the front surface is heated by the stepwise energy from an iodine lamp. The specific heat capacity is measured using an adiabatic scanning calorimeter. The density is measured by Archimedes' principle. Thermal conductivity is determined from the above properties. Measured samples are Li2CO3-K2CO3 (42.7–57.3, 50.0-50.0, and 62.0-38.0 mol%).

Notes: The combination of a high-performance liquid chromatograph and a magnetic type mass spectrometer with an atmospheric ionization source has been applied for analyses of thermolabile compounds, i.e. antibiotics, amino acids and glycosphingolipids.Chromatography was performed on a 4 mm i.d. x 150 mm column packed with 5 μm ODS at a flow rate of 1 ml min-1. The liquid chromatography/atmospheric pressure ionization (LC/API) magnetic-type mass spectrometer provides not only an abundant pseudo-molecular ion but also fragment ions which give a structural information resulting from collision-induced dissociation at the differential pumping region of the liquid chromatograph/mass spectrometer interface. The isomers of kanamycins could be differentiated from each other on the basis of their mass spectra obtained at the relatively higher drift voltage applied. LC/API mass spectra of leucine and isoleucine were very similar, but it was easy to differentiate one from another by checking the existence of the ions at m/z 43 or m/z 57 in their mass spectra. The LC/API mass spectra of glucosylceramides showed [MH]+ ions of good abundance and significant fragment ions useful for chemical characterization at a proper drift voltage setting in a controlled and reproducible manner.
