Notes: Summary In 1974, six patients with incapacitating unilateral Ménière's disease were given an empiric treatment with intratympanic gentamycin sulfate via the eustachian tube using a tubal catheter with a small side-branch. These patients then showed excellent results with relief from vertigo over a 13-year period. Since 1980, we have treated patients suffering from Ménière's disease with isosorbide. When patients could not be controlled with this therapy, isosorbide was given in addition to intratympanic gentamycin therapy using a tubal catheter. Of 75 patients with Ménière's disease who received gentamycin and isosorbide therapy, 41 patients could be evaluated by the classification for Ménière's disease proposed by the American Academy of Opthalmology and Otolaryngology (AAOO). Subsequent results showed that vertigo improved in 73% of the patients. According to the AAOO classification, 11 patients (27%) were group A, 16 patients (39%) were group B, and 4 patients (10%) were group C. Eleven patients were group D (27%) and experienced persistent vertigo despite treatment. Our experiences show that patients with severe Ménière's disease can be readily treated with intratympanic gentamycin therapy using a tubal catheter, even on an outpatient basis. This treatment is also a most effective treatment, as it allows the effects of isosorbide to be obtained with smaller doses of gentamycin sulfate.

Notes: Abstract Austenitic (fcc) Fe-Mn-Al alloys were nitrided in the temperature range 723 to 973 K by a glow discharge method using H2-N2 gas mixtures, and the microstructures and compositions of the nitrided layers were investigated in detail. A thin surface layer and a thick nitrogen-diffused layer (internal nitrided layer) were produced; the former consisted of both manganese nitrides and a ferritic (bec) phase, while the internal nitrided layer had an austenitic structure with the incorporated excess nitrogen atoms. X-ray photoelectron spectra revealed that the incorporated nitrogen atoms have a strong interaction with aluminium lattice atoms. By nitriding, hardness values of the Fe-Mn-Al alloys were increased fromH v = 350 to ca. 1000, and the corrosion resistance to sulphuric acid solution was enhanced by a factor of 30. These improvements are associated with a uniform distribution of the incorporated nitrogen and also with the presence of nitride-like interactions between the nitrogen and aluminium atoms.

Notes: Abstract NMR measurements on12B nuclei implanted in a thin sheet of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (Grafoil) have been made to study the magnitude of the polarization of12B and its electric quadrupole coupling. The magnitude of the residual polarization of12B held in carbon material is of crucial importance to the experiment measuring the average polarization of12B produced in the muon capture by12C. It was found that the polarization of12B can be maintained at 101.0±2.2% in Grafoil under a magnetic field of 3 kG. The electric quadrupole coupling was determined to bee 2 qQ/h=+1207.3±8.2 kHz. From the magnitude and the sign of the electric field gradienteq, the location of12B was found to be a substitutional site in the carbon lattice. The anomalous B-C bond involving thesp 2 hybrid orbitals with partially filledp z electrons is also discussed.
