    Notes: Abstract. The following extracellular enzymes have been readily detected in the culture filtrates from Aeromonas salmonicida: amylase, phospholipase, lysophospholipase and ribonuclease. Amylase and phospholipase have been partially characterized. Evidence suggests that glycogen may be the natural substrate for amylase, and that the role of the enzyme in natural infection is to digest glycogen present in fish muscle. The secretion of amylase activity is suppressed by the addition of glucose to the growth medium. The amounts of amylase, phospholipase and protease that can be detected in culture filtrates decreases with increase in the growth temperature from 25 to 32°C. This marked decrease in secretion of hydrolytic enzymes occurs although the initial growth rates at 25 and 32°C are similar. Free and membrane associated ribosomes have been isolated from cultures grown at 25 and 32°C. At 32°C there is a smaller proportion of membrane-associated ribosomes and this is consistent with the hypothesis that extracellular enzymes from Aeromonas salmonicida are secreted on membrane-bound polysomes.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es werden thermische und optische Studien einiger Diacethylene beschrieben, die zwecks der Senkung der Temperatur für das Auftreten von Mesophasen eigens gestaltet wurden. Ursprüngliche Untersuchungen an symmetrischen Molekülen wurden erweitert, um auch typische Flüssigkeitskristallmoleküle mit Diacethylenen mit Polymerhauptketten und unsymmetrisch substituierte Diacethylene wie Schiff-Basen mit langen Alkylketten einzubeziehen.
    Notes: Abstract We describe the thermal and optical studies of some diacetylene molecules which were specially designed in an attempt to reduce the temperature at which the mesophase appears. Original studies were on symmetrical molecules and these were extended to include typical liquid crystal molecules with diacetylenes providing a polymeric backbone and unsymmetrically substituted diacetylenes including Schiffs bases with long alkyl chains.

    Notes: Abstract The use of a simple counting method using a borescope and minirhizotron system to study the interaction of roots of wild cherry trees (Prunus avium L) and pasture in an upland silvopastoral system is described. Operator variation was greatest when distinguishing different tree root categories (e.g. white, brown, woody) but was not significant in relation to total tree or grass root counts or species differences. Analysis of covariance was used to take these differences into account in a field trial using several operators. The seasonal patterns of tree and pasture root growth were different. Tree roots peaked in May before maximal shoot growth. The peak in pasture roots occurred two weeks earlier. Tree height growth was increased by the use of herbicides to control grass growth but this effect was only apparent during August when the soil was dry and when pasture root counts were reduced.

    Notes: Abstract Behavioral studies using an olfactometer demonstrated that sexual females (oviparae) of the damson-hop aphid,Phorodon humuli, release a pheromone to which males respond. Volatiles produced by the oviparae were analyzed by coupled gas chromatography-single cell recording from the secondary rhinaria on the male antenna and showed the presence of one peak with major activity. Coupled gas chrornatography-mass spectrometry suggested a nepetalactol, which was shown to have the 4aR, 7S, 7aS stereochemistry by synthesis from the corresponding nepetalactone isolated from the labiate plantNepeta mussinii. Although the stereochemistry at carbon-1 is not yet established, a synthetic sample comprising ca. 70% 1S and 30% 1R attracted highly significant numbers of males to water traps placed within and adjacent to a hop garden. Initial studies also indicated attraction of males in both the olfactometer and in the field by volatiles from the primary host.

    Notes: Abstract Five extraction techniques were used to obtain quantitative measurements of monoterpenes from blue spruce and grand fir needles. Multivariate analysis of variance indicated that there was a significant difference in the amount of each monoterpene extracted by using different techniques. For both species, an 8-hr steam distillation of 10 g of material yielded the greatest amount of each monoterpene. This technique was also the most reproducible in that the coefficients of variation were lowest. A rapid steam distillation was relatively effective for grand fir, but not for blue spruce. A CO2 extraction was unreliable for both species.

    Notes: Abstract A method is described for sampling rhizosphere soil under newly establishedPicea sitchensis andAcer pseudoplatanus. The technique involves taking soil samples to a depth of 150 mm at 100 mm intervals along transects, each 45° from its neighbour, radiating from the base of the stem. Invertase activities were measured in the soil samples and compared to their activities in fallow and rhizosphere soils. When the field soil was dry, the tree root systems were carefully excavated to retain as many fine roots as possible. The distribution of the soil invertase was matched to the spatial distribution of the roots showing the precise position of the rhizosphere relative to the initial ‘blind’ soil sampling. Statistics were applied to derive equations for calculating the percentage enzyme activity relative to that found in rhizosphere soil at various locations radiating from the base of the stem. This information was subsequently applied to soil sampled under trees of the same age as those excavated to give a non-destructive method for sampling rhizosphere soil routinely from under a large number of trees.

    Notes: Summary This paper describes measurements of the impulses that particles experience while undergoing rapid shear. These were performed with an eye towards understanding the processes that lead to particle attrition and fracture. The measurements were taken from a discrete particle computer simulation of a simple shear flow of spheres. Special attention is paid to the strongest impulses as these will do the most damage. The results indicate that the largest impulses arise, not from the mean shear flow, but from the random particle velocities that are characterized by the so-called “granular temperature”. Measurements of the largest impulses are presented as functions of particle properties and solid concentration. Histograms of the impulse strengths illustrate the effect of concentration and particle surface friction. Finally, geometric distributions are presented that illustrate the shear induced anisotropy in the impulse strengths.
