    Notizen: A multilayer high Tc superconducting field-effect transistor-like structure was made from ultrathin YBa2Cu3O7−x films. An epitaxially grown dielectric SrTiO3 insulation layer, which had a forward bias breakdown voltage of about 20 V, allowed an electric field induced change in the channel layer of 1.25×1013 carrier/cm2 per volt of the gate voltage. A significant modulation of the normal state and superconducting properties was observed in samples with YBa2Cu3O7−x channel layers of a few unit cells thick. By applying gate voltage of different polarities, Tc was both suppressed and enhanced by ∼1 K. The resistance was modulated by as much as 20% in the normal state and by over 1500% near the zero resistance temperature.

    Notizen: Abstract Group velocities of fundamental mode Rayleigh and Love waves have been obtained across the central highlands in the northwestern part of the Indian peninsula and across the plateau region of the peninsula. Such data across the latter region were also obtained earlier and revealed model lithosphere IP11 for this region. Data of the two regions are similar and show that the lithospheric model IP11 continues from the plateau region to the central highlands. The model IP11 has been verified by comparing observed Love wave forms with synthetics ones.

    Notizen: Summary We have compared band sharing between the DNA fingerprints of members of an inbred human population with band sharing between members of an outbred population. It had not previously been determined whether the high rate of mutation at minisatellite loci is sufficient to prevent an increase in band sharing in moderately inbred populations. We have found that there is an increase in band sharing in the 2-kb to 9-kb size range, but not in the 〉9-kb size range, in the inbred population. The difference was consistently observed using four different multi-locus probes, viz. 33.6, 33.15, (CAC)5 and M13. Thus, we have demonstrated that moderate but prolonged inbreeding can lead to increased similarity in human DNA fingerprints. This should be considered when analysing DNA fingerprints in forensic or paternity cases involving members of an inbred community.

    Notizen: Summary The endogenous monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor (tribulin) activity of rat brain was investigated during the course of carrageenan induced acute paw inflammation. The increase in rat brain tribulin activity closely paralleled the time course intensity of the inflammation. The study indicates that, like externally induced stress, internal stress caused by the inflammation induced hyper algesia can also induce augmented brain tribulin activity. The findings, thus, support the hypothesis that tribulin may function as an endogenous endocoid marker of stress.

    Notizen: Summary The effects of some muscarinic M1 and M2 receptor agonists and antagonists on two dopamine-mediated behavioural paradigms, namely postswim grooming response and apormorphine-induced climbing behaviour, was investigated in mice. The M1 agonists and M2 receptor antagonists attenuated both paradigms, whereas the M1 receptor antagonists and M2 receptor agonists facilitated both behaviours. However, carbachol and physostigmine, exhibited a similar dose-dependent dual effect with the lower doses augmenting and the higher doses inhibiting both the behaviours, suggesting that the M2 agonist receptor specificity is lost on dose increment. The findings indicate that the central cholinergic muscarinic heteroreceptors, like the other muscarinic receptors, are functionally divisible into M1 and M2 receptor subtypes in their modulation of dopaminergic activity.

    Notizen: Abstract Myocyte necrosis occurs in ischaemic, inflammatory and toxic heart diseases and can be detected by indium-111 antimyosin imaging. This allows a non-invasive evaluation of the site, extent and quantitation of the severity of myocardial necrosis. Simultaneous imaging of perfusion in patients with myocardial infarction allows the differentiation of necrosed and perfused areas and the varying degrees of mismatch and overlap, which has prognostic significance.111In-antimyosin imaging is useful in the assessment of patients with unstable angina and in those for whom the diagnosis of infarction or unstable angina is not clear. In suspected myocarditis, a positive scan indicates the necessity for endomyocardial biopsy to confirm inflammation, whereas a negative scan makes the diagnosis of myocarditis unlikely. Anti-myosin imaging is not useful as a marker of rejection in the 1 year post-transplant, but uptake after this period is associated with an increased rejection rate and is therefore an important tool in planning management strategies. Most patients on anthracycline treatment have demonstrable uptake, which is related to the cumulative dose and to the ejection fraction. Its role in this situation is as yet unclear. The use of new ligands and radioisotopes (99mTc) is likely to allow earlier imaging and produce improved quality.

    Notizen: Summary Adduction contracture of the thumb predominantly affects the movements at the trapeziometacarpal joint, rendering the thumb ineffective in opposition and thereby destroying the essential element of grasp and pinch. It is the dominant hand of a family bread earner which is most commonly involved and proper primary management can avoid contracture development. Adequate release of the contracted first web space from hinge to hinge followed by a local skin flap cover and dynamic abduction splintage for the subsequent six weeks can give excellent results. Documenting the first web angle at every follow-up can detect early recurrences and dynamic splintage can be reinstituted to revert it back to normal dimensions. Secondary surgery in the form of flexor pollicis longus tendon lengthening or opponens-plasty helps to prevent recurrence of the contracture.
