Notes: We report the quantum efficiency of various metals irradiated by 266-nm, 4.66-eV laser pulses of 10-ps duration. The highest quantum efficiency obtained is 7.25×10−4 with samarium photocathodes. Current densities exceeding 66 and 21 kA/cm2 have been obtained from an area of 0.05 and 7 mm2, respectively. The maximum currents and current densities obtainable in these experiments are limited by the space charge. For surface fields exceeding 5×107 V/m on gold, the efficiency increases linearly with the field for the values investigated. Based on the quantum efficiency and optical damage threshold measurements, current densities exceeding 100 kA/cm2 seem feasible without damaging the photocathode.

Notes: Ni/Nb and Nb/Ni bilayers on Si(100), Ni/NbSi2/Si(100) and Nb/Ni/Si/SiO2/Si(100) were produced by rf sputtering and annealed by rapid thermal processing. Thereafter, phase sequence and morphology were deduced by Auger electron spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. The first three cases lead to phase separation of the binary compounds NbSi2 and NiSi2. Conversely when SiO2 is used as a buffer to limit the consumption of Si, the ternary phase Nb4Ni4Si7 or Nb4Ni4Si7+NbSi2 can be produced depending on the amount of Ni available. These observations are consistent with the Nb-Ni-Si phase diagram, in which phase separation occurs in a Si-rich environment whereas the ternary phase is stable in a Si-poor environment.

Notes: A syngeneic mouse monoclonal anti-idiotypic antibody (anti-Id). designated as B1/I. was generated against a monoclonal antibody (MoAb 91) specific for Ryegrass pollen allergen Lol p IV, This anti-Id recognized an idiotope (Id) that was also present on other monoclonal antibodies with the same specificity as MoAb 91, Observations that (i) the anti-Id inhibited the binding of MoAb 91 to Lol p IV and (ii) the Id anti-Id interaction could be inhibited by Lol p IV indicated that the Id was located within or near the antigen combininfisite. These properties served to characterise HI 1 as an internal image anti-Id, Evidence that an immune response in different species to Lol p IV elicits the formation of antibodies which express a common Id was provided by the observations that (i) the Id anti-Id interactions could be inhibited by mouse, human and rabbit antisera to Lol p IV and (ii) the binding of these antisera to Lol p IV could be inhibited by the anti-Id, Interestingly, the internal image anti-Id B1/1 also recognized an Id on a monoclonal antibody which was directed to an epitope of Lol p IV. different from that recognized by MoAb 91.

Notes: Summary The case of a 38 year-old-man with a mass at the S2 level similar to a benign nerve root tumor (neuroma) is reported. The CT scan examination revealed the mass close underneath but not in connection with a disc herniation at the L5/S1 level. During operation the mass was not encountered as tumor but as free sequestered disc herniation, which was confirmed by histological examination. The reasons for considering the mass a tumor are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The adsorption of self-organizing thiol films on polycrystalline gold substrates was investigated in situ by optical second harmonic generation. Growth of the films could be detected at submonolayer coverage. For a comparison with classical surface analytical methods the thiol coverage was measured ex situ by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We find that formation of ordered thiol films up to monolayer coverage can be described by Langmuir adsorption kinetics.

Notes: Summary Familial defective apolipoprotein B-100 (FDB) is a recently identified dominantly inherited genetic disorder, which leads to increased serum levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol with reduced affinity for the LDL receptor. This genetic disorder is characterized by defective binding of the apolipoprotein B-100 (apo B-100), which is virtually the sole protein constituent of LDL, to the LDL receptor. The defective binding results from a G to A mutation at amino acid 10708 in exon 26 of the apolipoprotein B (apo B) gene creating a substitution of glutamine for arginine in the codon for amino acid 3500. It is postulated that FDB can exhibit the same clinical features as familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) caused by a defective LDL receptor. The purpose of this paper is to report on an individual with a defective LDL and a defective LDL receptor. The clinical features of this individual were the same as in the family members with either defective LDL or a defective LDL receptor: premature arcus lipoides, tendon xanthomata, and premature atherosclerosis. Although the clinical features were present to the same degree as in individuals with either defect the prognosis and treatment of such an individual could be different.

Notes: Summary In three consecutive pilot studies the effect of recombinant human granulocyte/macrophage-colony-stimulating factor (rhGM-CSF) on haematopoetic recovery after chemotherapy in patients with small-cell lung cancer was investigated. In study I, 20 patients received AIO chemotherapy (A, Adriamycin 25 mg/m2 on days 1+2; I, ifosfamide 2 g/m2 on days 1–5; O, vincristine 2 mg on day 1) at 4-week intervals either with or without rhGM-CSF (250 μg/m2 sc) from day 8 until recovery of leucocytes. Neither the degree nor the duration of myelosuppression was markedly influenced by rhGM-CSF. Suggesting that these disappointing results were caused by the late onset of GM-CSF application, in the following study we shortened chemotherapy to 3 days and started with GM-CSF on day 4. The main objective of this study was to test whether the earlier administration of GM-CSF allowed treatment intervals to be reduced or the dose to be escalated. After 10 patients had received a starting dose of AIO (A, 50 mg/m2 on day 1; I, 2 g/m2 on days 1–3; 0,2 mg on day 1) alternating with cisplatin (90 mg/m2 on day 1) and etoposide (150 mg/m2 on days 1–3), the dose of ifosfamide and etoposide was escalated to 2.5 g/m2 on days 1–3 and 200 mg/m2 on days 1–3 in the next 10 patients. Treatment was given at 2-week intervals when leucocytes were 〉 3500/mm3 and thrombocytes were 〉 100 000 mm3 on day 14. At each dose level patients were randomized to receive either rhGM-CSF 250 μg/m2 s.c. on days 4–12 or no GM-CSF. In this study, rhGM-CSF markedly shortened the duration of leukopenia. Reinstitution of chemotherapy on day 15 was possible at dose level 1 in 1/4 patients without and in 3/4 patients with GM-CSF, and at dose level 2 in 0/5 patients without and in 5/5 patients with GM-CSF. However, the degree of myelosuppression was not improved by GMCSF. In a third study we tried to apply rhGM-CSF simultaneously with chemotherapy. After 3 patients had received GM-CSF starting on day 1 concurrent to AIO chemotherapy, we noticed an increase of myelosuppression with prolonged neutropenia and thrombocytopenia and stopped this investigation. Considering all patients included in these three consecutive pilot studies, there is no difference in response rates and survival between patients with and without rhGM-CSF treatment. Optimal scheduled rhGM-CSF application shortens the period of myelosuppression and allows reinstitution of chemotherapy at 2-week intervals. Whether these modifications are able to improve the overall treatment results, has to be determined in future clinical trials.
