    Notizen: The electron effective masses for Al0.15Ga0.35In0.5P and Ga0.5In0.5P have been investigated using conventional and optically detected cyclotron resonance. For AlGaInP (partly ordered) it is determined to be m*=(0.14±0.01) m0. For disordered GaInP the mass is found to be m*=(0.092±0.003) m0 and for ordered material (band gap reduction ∼50 meV) m*=(0.088±0.003) m0. The experimentally deduced values are compared with those obtained from five-band k⋅p calculation.

    Notizen: Abstract Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty can be performed safely and effectively in patients with chronic total coronary occlusion. To investigate the effect on left ventricular function, global and regional left ventricular ejection fraction were analyzed by contrast angiography in 49 patients before and 10±6 weeks after successful recanalization. Coronary angiography at follow-up showed reocclusion in 12 patients (24%). In 37 patients with patent arteries global ejection fraction increased from 55.8±7.1% at baseline to 62.5 ± 11.3% at follow-up (P 〈 0.001), and regional wall motion assessed by the centerline method improved from −1.7 + 1.0 to – 0.6 ± 1.5 standard deviations/chord (P〈0.001). In contrast, in patients with reocclusion neither global ejection fraction nor regional wall motion were significantly different at follow-up compared with baseline. Changes in global or regional left ventricular function after coronary recanalization were unrelated to other parameters such as severity of angina, duration of occlusion, history of myocardial infarction, presence or absence of visible collaterals, or baseline left ventricular function. Thus in patients with primarily successful recanalization of chronically occluded coronary arteries persistent vessel patency is the major determinant of global and regional improvement of left ventricular function.

    Notizen: We present results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optical spectroscopy on different charge states of the transition metal impurity iron in ZnTe and CdTe. We identify the energy level position of the Fe+ acceptor in ZnTe at Ev + 1.7eV and estimate its position in CdTe. Ionisation transitions from Fe+to the conduction and valence bands ar found in both absorption spectroscopy and photo-EPR. Optical intra-defect tracsitions from Fe+ to crystalfield-split excited states ar resolved for the first time. This assignment to Fe2+ is based on optically detected EPR. Application of both far-infrared Fourier transform and EPR spectroscopy allows the determination of the total iron concentration in all charge states.

    Notizen: We have extended to molecules a density functional previously parametrized for atomic computations. The Coulomb-hole-Hartree-Fock functional, introduced by Clementi in 1963, estimates the dynamical correlation energy by the computations of a Hartree-Fock-type single-determinant wave function, where the Hartree-Fock potential was augmented with an effective potential term, related to a hard Coulomb hole enclosing each electron. The method was later revisited by S. Chakravorty and E. Clementi [Phys. Rev. A 39, 2290 (1989)], where a Yukawa-type soft Coulomb hole replaced the previous hard hole; atomic correlation energies, computed for atoms with Z = 2 to Z = 54 as well as for a number of excited states, validated the method. In this article, we parametrized a function, which controls the width of the soft Coulomb hole, by fitting the first and second atomic ionization potentials of the atoms with 1 ≤ Z ≤ 18. The parametrization has been preliminarily validated by computing the dissociation energy for a number of molecules. A few-determinant version of the Coulomb-hole-Hartree-Fock method, necessary to account for the nondynamic correlation corrections, is briefly discussed. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
