Notes: The terminating atomic plane of SrTiO3 (001) surface was investigated by means of coaxial impact-collision ion scattering spectroscopy (CAICISS). CAICISS spectra proved that SrTiO3 (001) surfaces of as-supplied substrates as well as of O2-annealed substrates were predominantly terminated with TiO2 atomic plane, while the SrO atomic plane came at the topmost surface of SrTiO3 (001) homoepitaxial film. This indicates the structural conversion of the topmost atomic layer from TiO2 to SrO occurred during the SrTiO3 homoepitaxial growth. The azimuth rotational CAICISS spectra exhibited a fourfold symmetry in the surface atom alignments, showing the square lattice structure of a terminating plane. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: All the reported Japanese patients with group A xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) have two or three mutations at codon 116 in exon 3, codon 228 in exon 6, and the splicing acceptor site of intron 3 of XP group A complementing (XPAC) gene. A homozygote (XP390S) with a nonsense mutation at codon 228 has less severe neurological abnormalities than patients with the splicing mutation at the acceptor site of intron 3. As homozygotes for the nonsense mutation at codon 116, which truncates a carboxyl-terminal site of XPAC protein at an early part of its zinc-finger domain, have not been reported previously, the possible severity of associated neurological abnormalities was not known. We report a group A XP patient, XP180S, who had neurological abnormalities which were more severe than those in patients homozygous for the splicing mutation. The polymerase chain reaction product from exon 3 of the patient's XPAC gene was digested completely into three fragments by MseI restriction endonuclease. Thus, the patient was homozygous for the mutation at codon 116.

Notes: Abstract By immunohistochemistry of rat brain in conjunction with a specific antibody against 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP), we examined immunoreactivity to 5HTP in neurons, from which 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT; serotonin) was depleted by reserpine treatment. The distribution patterns of 5HTP-positive neurons overlapped with those of 5HT neurons. Treatment with reserpine (5 mg/kg, 90 min before death) caused a complete suppression of 5HT-positive staining, but 5HTP-immunostaining remained in perikarya of the nuclei raphe dorsalis, centralis superior and obscurus. Treatment with reserpine (25 mg/kg, 90 min before death) suppressed the 5HTP-immunoreaction in certain perikarya (e.g. of the nucleus raphe dorsalis) and fibres; however, 5HTP-immunostaining remained in perikarya of the nuclei centralis superior and raphe obscurus. This suggests that these neurons synthesize more 5HTP by a process which appears to be stimulated by reserpine.

Notes: Abstract While laparoscopic cholecystectomy is being increasingly performed on patients with gallbladder disease, this approach in cases of polypoid lesions in the gallbladder may not always be justified. We report here a case of early development of intrahepatic metastasis after laparoscopic cholecystectomy for polypoid gallbladder cancer; wedge resection of the gallbladder bed and dissection of regional lymph nodes had to be done. When a malignancy of the gallbladder is suspected during preoperative examinations, open cholecystectomy should be done.

Notes: Abstract Modification of an isotropic precursor pitch (IMP) for general performance carbon fibre (GPCF) was carried out by blending isotropic and mesophase pitches (IP and MP, respectively), both of which were synthesized from naphthalene using HF/BF3 as catalysts because they carried a large amount of naphthenic hydrogens. Both IP and MP were miscible with IMP at temperatures higher than their softening points. The softening point of the blended pitch dropped remarkably, being lower than 200° C with 40% IP. Such lower softening points made spinning much smoother. Modification also enhanced the stabilization reactivities of pitch fibre, the time required for the sufficient stabilization at 270° C decreasing by 20 and 30 min by blending with 20% IP and 20% MP, respectively. The mechanical properties of the resultant carbon fibres were also improved.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we are concerned with a multiobjective optimization problem with inequality constraints. We introduce a constraint qualification and derive the Kuhn-Tucker type necessary conditions for efficiency. Moreover, we give conditions which ensure the constraint qualification.
