Notes: The structure of polycrystalline Si (poly-Si) films, prepared by annealing amorphous Si (a-Si) films deposited using Si2H6, has been investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electron spin resonance, as functions of deposition conditions, such as deposition temperature Td (450–580 °C) of the a-Si and annealing time under a fixed temperature of 600 °C. A dominant texture of the poly-Si films changed from a 〈100〉 texture for Td below 530 °C to a 〈111〉 for Td above 530 °C, independent of the deposition rate of the a-Si films and of the film thickness. Although the XRD grain size was independent of Td, the TEM grain size increased from 1.0 to 2.5 μm with decreasing Td. It is suggested that the increase in this TEM size is caused by enhanced lateral growth of 〈100〉 grains due to the presence of strain. The spin density Ns and the factor g were found to first increase with the annealing time, and rapidly decreased after the films were crystallized. It is also found that the value of g for the poly-Si films decreased from 2.0051 to 2.0048 with decreasing Td. Furthermore, effects of post-hydrogenation on the poly-Si films with different textures were investigated, and a structural change of the boundary regions in the poly-Si films is discussed in connection with a change in the dominant texture, through the corresponding change in g. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report a 49-year-old woman with an eccrine syringofibroadenoma. An asymptomatic nodule appeared on the right heel, and subsequently enlarged gradually. Histological examination revealed anastomosing strands of pale epithelial cells, with occasional duct formation and mucinous fibrovascular stroma. There were two types of strands: thick and thin. Immunohistochemical study, using a panel of monoclonal antikeratin antibodies, revealed that the immunoreactivity differed between the two types of strands. The thick strands showed a staining pattern similar to the uppermost portion of the intradermal duct, and the thin strands showed a pattern similar to the other portion of the duct. This observation suggests that the thick and thin strands differentiate towards the uppermost portion and the remainder of the duct, respectively.

Notes: The detection of cytokeratins in neoplastic tissues by immunohistochemical methods has numerous diagnostic and investigative applications, because cytokeratins are usually conserved in tumour cells during malignant transformation. Recently, however, it has been reported that progression to malignancy is associated with commencement of expression of low-molecular-weight cytokeratins. In the present study, 42 specimens from 35 cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the skin were analysed by immunohistochemical techniques, using polyclonal anti-involucrin antibody and a panel of monoclonal antikeratin antibodies, in order to investigate the nature and differentiation of SCCs. The expression of cytokeratins and involucrin in well-differentiated SCCs was similar to that in normal epidermis. In contrast with well-differentiated SCCs, the expression of differentiation-specific cytokeratins and involucrin was diminished in the immature tumour cells in proportion to the malignancy of the SCCs. Some antibodies, however, stained all tumour cells, irrespective of the degree of malignancy. Furthermore, expression of simple epithelial and non-cornifying stratified squamous epithelial cytokeratins was observed in atypical tumour cells of poorly differentiated SCCs. It is of interest that similar expression was noted in many tumour cells in the lymph node metastases and in some tumour cells in the primary cutaneous lesions. Cytokeratin expression similar to that in normal epidermal keratinocytes was conserved in well-differentiated SCCs, but the expression of cytokeratins changed during progression to malignant transformation. The expression of simple epithelial or non-cornifying stratified squamous epithelial cytokeratins in cutaneous SCCs may be a marker for their capability of invasion and metastatic potential.

Notes: The nature of clear cell acanthoma has not been clarified, although many hypotheses have been proposed, including a benign neoplasm derived from epidermis or the acrosyringium, or a non-specific dermatosis. In this study, seven cases of clear cell acanthoma were analysed by immunohistochemical techniques, using various monoclonal antikeratin antibodies, and antibodies against filaggrin, involucrin and epithelial membrane antigen. Different immunoreactivities were noted between clear cell acanthoma and a normal eccrine gland, including the acrosyringium. Immuno-reactivities of clear cell acanthoma were almost identical to those of normal epidermis, although some antibodies gave a different staining pattern between clear cell acanthoma and normal epidermis. The expression of cytokeratins in psoriatic epidermis has been reported to change as a result of abnormal differentiation or maturation. Clear cell acanthoma showed a similar staining pattern to inflammatory dermatoses such as psoriasis vulgaris, lichen planus and discoid lupus erythematosus. We speculate that clear cell acanthoma is a localized form of inflammatory dermatosis rather than a neoplasm.

Notes: Abstract  The effect of root exudates from onions differing in P status on spore germination and hyphal growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi was investigated. Onion (Allium cepa) was grown in solution culture at different phosphorus concentrations (0, 0.1, 1.0, 8.0 and 24.0 mg P l–1) and root exudates were collected. When spores of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, Gigaspora margarita were incubated with these root exudates, spore germination was only slightly affected but hyphal growth was greatly affected, particularly with exudates from P-deficient plants. This suggests that the P nutrition of host plants influences the composition of root exudates and thereby the hyphal growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

Notes: Abstract One-dimensional interaction between a planar shock wave and a rubber or low-porosity foam is investigated experimentally and numerically. The considered polyurethane foam is of high density (ρ c=290 kg/m3) and lowporosity (ϕ=0.76), and this corresponds to an intermediate condition between rubber and high-porosity foam. Stress-strain relations for the low-porosity foam are investigated by machine tests, which show larger deformation against compressive force and higher non-linearity in stress-strain curve as compared with rubber. Also the low-porosity foam shows a hysteresis cycle. Experiments on shock wave-foam interactions are conducted by using a shock tube. Experimental time history of the surface stress of the foam at the end of the shock tube does not show shock type stress increase, but continuous excessive stress rise can be seen, and then dumping vibration approaching to gas dynamic pressure of the reflected shock wave is followed, and the highest stress amounts about 3∼4 times of the pressure after the reflected gas dynamic shock wave. Interactive motions of gas and the low-porosity foam are analyzed using the Lagrangean coordinates system. An elastic model for a low-porosity foam is assumed to be a single elastic material with the measured stress-strain relation. Results of numerical simulations are compared with the shock tube experiments, which show essentially same stress variations with experimental results.

Notes: Abstract We observed the energy distribution of the photoelectrons generated from the highly charged ions in the tunneling regime by using a circularly polarized Ti:Sapphire laser (745 nm, 100 fs). The peaks for each successive charge state up to Ar3+, Kr4+, and Xe5+ were clearly resolved, and the peaks due to higher charge states were flattened in the high-energy region and deviated from those predicted by the quasistatic model. This deviation is explained by pondero-motive acceleration in the strong field gradient. In Xe, Xe8+ was generated at a peak intensity of 2.0 × 1016 W/cm2.
