Notes: Abstract. The demand for washed coal in India has led to the planning of washeries. The sources of air pollution in washeries are described is this paper. A number of new washeries are going to be installed within the vicinity of Jharia Coalfield in eastern India to fulfill the demand for washed coal. Air pollution monitoring was conducted at four coal washeries of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. (BCCL). Methods adopted for selection of monitoring stations and sampling and analysis of ambient air quality are discussed. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations in an industrial area, a residential area, and a sensitive area such as a hospital were found to be high and to exceed the limit specified by the Indian Pollution Control Board. NOx and SO2 concentrations in some areas were also found to exceed the specified limits. A high percentage of respirable dust in SPM indicates a health hazard. Benzene-soluble material was found to be 40%, which can be fatal to human health. Suppression measures are discussed for dust, and control measures for air pollution in coal washeries are proposed.

Notes: This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation of the effects of near-neutral density solid particles on turbulent liquid flow in a channel. Interactions of particles, in a size range about the dissipative length scale, with wall turbulence have been simulated at low volume fractions (average volume fraction less than 4×10−4). Fluid motion is calculated by directly solving the Navier-Stokes equations by a pseudo-spectral method and resolving all scales of motion. Particles are moved in a Lagrangian frame through the action of forces imposed by the fluid and gravity. Particle effects on fluid motion are fed back at each time step by calculating the velocity disturbance caused by the particles assuming the flow around them is locally Stokesian. Particle-particle interactions are not considered. The slightly heavier-than-fluid particles of the size range considered are found to preferentially accumulate in the low-speed streaks, as reported in several other investigations. It is also found that particles smaller than the dissipative length scale reduce turbulence intensities and Reynolds stress, whereas particles that are somewhat larger increase intensities and stress. By examining higher order turbulence statistics and doing a quadrant analysis of the Reynolds stress, it is found that the ejection-sweep cycle is affected—primarily through suppression of sweeps by the smaller particles and enhancement of sweep activity by the larger particles. A preliminary assessment of the impact of these findings on scalar transfer is made, as enhancement of transfer rate is a motivation of the overall work on this subject. For the case investigated, comparison of the calculations with an existing experiment was possible, and shows good agreement. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effect of different chemical mechanisms for adsorption, which depend on the incidence energy of disilane, on the film morphology is investigated by comparing deposition by high (∼2 eV) kinetic energy disilane jets, direct chemisorption; low (∼0.09 eV) kinetic energy disilane jets and ultra high vacuum chemical vapor deposition, trapping-mediated chemisorption. For substrate temperatures of 500–550 °C the mechanism for adsorption does not influence the film morphology as observed for films up to 3300 A(ring) thick, which are comparable in smoothness to the starting substrate, as determined by atomic force microscopy. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The role of the Si surface in the annihilation of point defects has been studied for ultrashallow p+/n junctions. The dopant and defect distributions for low-energy implants lie within a few hundred angstroms of the surface. The proximity of the Si surface has been shown to help in the efficient removal of point defects for the shallower junctions. A 5 keV, 1×1015 cm−2 BF2 implant and a 30 keV, 3.3×1014 cm−2 BF2 implant were estimated to create comparable damage at different depths. After identical anneals, the higher-energy implant sample showed end-of-range dislocation loops in cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy analysis, while the low-energy sample, for which the point defect distribution was closer to the surface, was defect free. This is attributed to the role of the Si surface as an efficient sink for the removal of point defects. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Pulsed laser induced reactive quenching at a liquid–solid interface was used for the synthesis of tetrahedrally coordinated crystalline carbon nitride on a tungsten substrate. The crystalline phase was identified by transmission electron diffraction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the carbon atoms are coordinated only tetrahedrally with nitrogen—as expected for C3N4. The atomic percentage of N (considering only those atoms coordinated with C) is about 35%. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Molybdenum is a material commonly used in ultrahigh vacuum silicon processing systems. This letter shows that even at temperatures as low as 500 °C, the presence of Mo in contact with silicon during processing can, under certain circumstances, lead to Mo contamination of the silicon. MOS capacitors were fabricated on epitaxial silicon films grown at ∼500 °C by remote plasma chemical vapor deposition. The wafers were mounted on metal pucks made of either molybdenum or steel during the epitaxial growth process. Capacitor results of the Mo puck-mounted wafers showed low minority carrier lifetimes and trapping ledges in the I–V plots, problems which were absent when steel pucks were used. Structural defects and plasma-induced sputtering were ruled out and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) analysis verified the presence of Mo in the wafers, confirming that Mo contamination from the puck during epitaxial growth was responsible for the poor electrical results. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract A new zeolite derivative has been prepared by interacting Th(IV) and complexone in HCl medium and neutralising with aqueous ammonia. The amorphous and siliceous derivative showed a total mass loss of 29.25% in TG for stepwise dehydration, dehydroxylation and decomposition. Heats of reaction were 1167.6 J g−1 at 88.7°C and 75.167 J g−1 at 492.5°C for loss of volatile components and decomposition respectively.29Si and27Al MAS NMR spectra as well as XRD data of the derivative before and after calcination indicate presence of both four-coordinated and six-coordinated Al in varying ratios and the total loss of crystallinity.

Notes: Abstract The paper consists of some exact tilted solutions for a homogeneous Bianchi type VI0 universe. The material distribution is taken to be a stiff fluid with heat conduction. The physical and kinematical parameters have also been calculated to discuss the models in detail.
