    Notes: Abstract The effects of mesoporphyrin, a novel porphyrin derivative, on type II collagen-induced arthritis in mice were studied. Mesoporphyrin (10–30 mg/kg) and prednisolone (5 mg/kg; reference drug) reduced the incidence and severity of type II collagen-induced arthritis in mice, as assayed by clinical observation and histopathological studies. Although both agents inhibited type II collagen-induced delayed type hypersensitivity in arthritic mice, only prednisolone inhibited humoral immunity to type II collagen. The effects of mesoporphyrin on T cell dependent allergic inflammation were examined, in order to study the mechanism by which it inhibits arthritis. Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB; superantigen)-potentiated collagen-induced arthritis and sheep red blood cell-induced delayed type hypersensitivity reaction were clearly inhibited by mesoporphyrin. Moreover, the superantigen-induced CD-25 expression on T cells was inhibited by mesoporphyrin. These results indicate that mesoporphyrin inhibits type II collagen-induced arthritis by inhibiting the activation of T cells.

    Notes: We observed the detailed behavior of electromigration-induced gaps (voids that cause an open circuit) in a submicron-wide Al line layered on a Ti/TiN conductor by in situ sideview transmission electron microscopy. Two types of gaps were observed. The first type is characterized by extensive growth, which may make the Ti/TiN shunt ineffective under use conditions. The gap causes a decrease in the Al drift velocity upstream in the electron flow. This decrease probably results from mass transport through the exposed TiN surface into the gap. The second type of gap did not grow and later healed; therefore, the shunt seems to be effective. The gap had little influence on the drift velocity. Mass was transported directly from the cathode-side Al segment through the gap to the anode-side segment. These mass transport processes may be the causes of resistance oscillation in layered lines. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Bax and Bcl-2 proteins are identified as regulating molecules for programmed cell death. In the central nervous system, programmed cell death or apoptosis is considered to be an important phenomenon that is related to neuron vulnerability to a variety of toxic effects, including ischaemic insult. In this study, localization of Bax and Bcl-2 proteins was investigated in the human central nervous system using autopsy cases without any neurological disorder. Results were compared with findings in the rat. Most neurons in human cerebral cortex, basal ganglia and brain stem were positive for both Bax and Bcl-2 proteins, whereas Purkinje cells in cerebellum and neurons in hippocampal CA1, CA2 and CA3 regions were positive for Bax but negative or weakly positive for Bcl-2. Glial cells examined in all sections were negative for both proteins. Choroid plexus, ependymal cells and arachnoid villi showed positive reactivity for both proteins. A possible relationship between the localization of Bax or Bcl-2 proteins and the cell vulnerability in central nervous system is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract  We report here that in Escherichia coli, the anti-bacterial agent nalidixic acid induces transient stabilization and increased synthesis of σ32, accompanied by the induction of heat shock proteins (Dnak and GroEL proteins). The induction of heat shock proteins, increased synthesis of σ32, and stabilization of σ32 observed on treatment of wild-type cells with nalidixic acid were not observed in a nalA26 mutant, a strain that is resistant to nalidixic acid as the result of a mutation in the gyrA gene. Not only oxolinic acid, but also novobiocin, whose targets are the A and B subunits of DNA gyrase, respectively, also induced stabilization and increased synthesis of σ32. Thus, inhibition of the activity of DNA gyrase may cause stabilization and increased synthesis of σ32, resulting in turn in induction of heat shock proteins.

    Notes: Abstract A cavity perturbation technique is used to measure the magnetic-field dependence of surface impedance at 24 and 41 GHz in superconducting κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 single crystals. A peak structure in the surface resistance Rs(H) is observed (1) below Tc, (2) when microwave electric field is perpendicular to the superconducting layer, and (3) at higher magnetic field for the lower measurement frequency (anticyclotronic behavior). These observations are identified as the Josephson plasma mode. The peak field increases as the temperature is lowered even below the irreversibility line in contrast to the case of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y.

    Notes: Abstract Local magnetization measurements using micro Hall probes were carried out on a quasi two-dimensional organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2. Peak structures in the local magnetization hysteresis loops were found at around 50 G. We ascribe this anomaly to the field-induced decomposition of vortex lines into pancake vortices, which is found in a high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y. Mixed state phase diagram in κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 is compared with that in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y.

    Notes: Abstract The thermoelectric power of glasses in the systems V2O5-Sb2O3-TeO2 and V2O5-Bi2O3-TeO2 was measured at temperatures in the range 373–473 K. The glasses in both systems were found to be n-type semiconductors. The Seebeck coefficient, Q, at 473 K was determined as −192 to −151 μVK−1 for V2O5-Sb2O3-TeO2 glasses, and −391 to −202 μVK−1 for V2O5-Bi2O3-TeO2 glasses. For these glasses in both systems, Heikes' formula was satisfied adequately for the relationship between Q and In [C v/(1-Cv)] (C v = V4+/Vtotal, C v is the ratio of the concentration of reduced vanadium ions), and discussions confirmed small polaron hopping conduction of the glasses in both systems. Mackenzie's formula relating to Q and V5+/V4+ was also applicable to the glasses in both systems, and it was concluded that the dominant factor determining Q was C v.
