Notizen: Abstract A persistent external carotid-vertebrobasilar anastomosis, associated with intracranial aneurysms, was identified. The anomalous vessel passed through the hypoglossal canal, and was possibly a variant of the persistent primitive hypoglossal artery.

Notizen: Abstract We reviewed the MRI of 20 patients with a ranula (8 simple and 12 plunging) and ten with other cystic masses in the floor of the mouth and/ or suprahyoid portion of the neck (three haemangiomas, two neuromas, one monomorphic adenoma, one lipoma, two lateral cervical cysts and one dermoid cyst). Histological diagnoses were obtained in all cases with the exception of one presumed haemangioma. Ranulas were all well-defined, homogeneous masses giving low signal on T1-and markedly high signal on T2-weighted images. While simple ranulas were all confined to the sublingual space, plunging ranulas were centered on the submandibular space and tended to spill into one or more adjacent spaces. They extended into the sublingual space anteriorly (producung a so-called tail sign) in eight of 12 cases and into the parapharyngeal space superiorly in five. Although they sometimes filled a considerable part of the parapharyngeal space, displacement of surrounding muscles or vessels was usually slight, which was thought to reflect the nature of extravasation pseudocysts. All other cystic masses in our study had one or more MRI finding different from those of ranulas and could be easily differentiated from them.

Notizen: Summary ¶ A rare case of a ruptured internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysm, with ICA stenosis and moyamoya vessels, was diagnosed in a young female patient after radiotherapy for optic glioma. Retrospective analysis revealed that an extraordinarily high dose of radiation (110 Gy) had been delivered to the area around the ICA in two therapeutic sessions. Clipping and wrapping of the aneurysm were performed and the patient made a good recovery. A review of the literature suggested that rupture of radiation-induced aneurysms is a rare event, but may be fatal. Considerable care must therefore be taken when delivering high-dose radiation to cerebral arteries. We suggest that the incidence of radiation-induced moyamoya vessels is higher in younger patients.

Notizen: Abstract  To characterize quantitative trait loci (QTLs), we used marker-assisted selection (MAS) to develop three nearly isogenic lines (NILs) differing only for the presence of a single, specific QTL (QTL-NILs) –Hd1, Hd2, and Hd3 – for heading date in rice. The three lines contained the chromosomal region of the target QTL from donor variety Kasalath(indica) in the genetic background of var. Nipponbare (japonica). To analyze epistatic interactions in pairs of these QTLs, we also used MAS to develop four combined QTL-NILs with 2 of the 3 QTLs or with all 3. Different daylength treatment testing of the QTL-NILs revealed that the three QTLs control photoperiod sensitivity. Genetic analysis of F2 populations derived from crosses between the three QTL-NILs with a single QTL using molecular markers revealed the existence of epistatic interactions between Hd1 and Hd2, and Hd2 and Hd3. These interactions were also confirmed by the analysis of combined QTL-NILs under different daylength conditions. The existence of an epistatic interaction between Hd1 and Hd3 was also clarified. Based on these results, we suggest that the Kasalath allele of Hd3 does not affect photoperiod sensitivity by itself but that it is involved in enhancement of the expression of the Nipponbare alleles of Hd1 and Hd2.

Notizen: Abstract A 36-year-old male patient with dermatomyo-sitis (DM) associated with rapidly progressive interstitial pneumonia (IP) was successfully treated by high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). He suffered from myopathy, skin lesions, and IP. In spite of the treatment with a high-dose corticosteroid, IP progressed rapidly. Then high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (20 g/day, 4 days) was administered. The skin lesions, myopathy, and pulmonary lesions improved. High-dose IVIG was considered to be a relatively safe and effective treatment for progressive IP associated with DM.

Notizen: Abstract. Bulk laser-induced damage in KDP crystal was measured using a single-shot 1-ns pulse Nd:YAG laser in a transverse and longitudinal single mode. It is found that the damage threshold of KDP single crystal depends on the laser irradiation direction, polarization direction and laser wavelength. The damage threshold in the direction of c axis is about two times higher than that of in the a(b) axis at 0.532 and 1.064 μm wavelength. This result is consistent with the mechanical strength tests for various directions of KDP crystal.

Notizen: Abstract Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S10 (rps10) is encoded by the mitochondrial genome in potato and pea. Here we show that the rps10 gene is absent from the mitochondrial genome of rice and has been transferred to the nucleus. Cloning and transcriptional analysis show that there are two rps10 genes in the rice nuclear genome and that their transcripts differ in abundance. Western analysis detected the RPS10 protein in the soluble fraction of rice mitochondria, although neither RPS10 has any obvious N-terminal presequence for targeting to mitochondria. This result suggests that targeting information is present in the internal region of rice RPS10. Genomic sequence analysis indicated that each rps10 gene has an intron in the 5′ untranslated region (5′ UTR) and that these intron sequences are homologous to each other. This result strongly suggests that a duplication event occurred after transfer of the rps10 gene to the nucleus. The duplicated rps10 genes have since been translocated to different chromosomes, because the two rps10 genes were mapped on chromosomes 6 and 12 by RFLP analysis. Interestingly, the 5′ UTR and the intron of the rice rps10 genes are homologous to sequences found in several rice genes with various functions, such as osk4, EF-1β2 and RAG1, suggesting a common origin and a functional role for the 5′ UTR. Acquisition of the 5′ flanking region might have accelerated the activation of the mitochondrial rps10 gene which was transferred to the nuclear genome.

Notizen: Abstract The TOM1 gene codes for a so-called HECT protein, a putative ubiquitin ligase, in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Deletion of the entire gene (tom1-10) or the sequence encoding the HECT domain (tom1-2) causes temperature sensitivity for growth. Here we report the isolation of extragenic, recessive suppressors of tom1-2, which were designated tmr (for tom1 revertant) mutations. These were classified into eight complementation groups and six of the genes were identified: tmr1/cyr1, tmr2/sch9, tmr3/zuo1, tmr4, tmr5/mot1, tmr6/sse1, tmr7 and tmr8/kre6. These results suggested that the tom1 phenotype can be rescued by down-regulating the cAMP/PKA pathway. It was found that the temperature sensitivity of the tom1-2 mutant is indeed suppressed by multiple copies of PDE2 or BCY1, which encode negative regulators of the cAMP/PKA pathway. The MSN2 gene, which encodes a zinc-finger transcription factor involved in the general stress response is also a multicopy suppressor of tom1. It was found that induction levels of both STRE-mediated (general stress response) and HSE-mediated gene expression (heat shock response) upon shift to high temperature are reduced by more than half in the tom1 mutant. Most of the isolated tmr mutations rescued one of the defects seen in both types of heat stress response in the tom1 mutant.
