Notizen: Molecular beam and time of flight methods have been used to examine the angular distributions and velocity distributions of the CO2 product molecules formed in the catalytic oxidation of CO on a Rh(111) single crystal in the surface temperature range 700–1000 K. The angular distribution was sharply peaked about the surface normal, and cannot be described by a simple cosn θ expression. No temperature dependence was observed in the angular distribution over the range of temperatures studied here. Observed velocity distributions were clearly non-Maxwellian and had average translational energies in excess of those expected at the surface temperatures. Furthermore, the average velocity depended strongly on the desorption angle. Molecules desorbing along the surface normal had an average translational energy of ∼8 kcal/mol. The average energy decreased with increasing angle, reaching a value of ∼4 kcal/mol at an angle of 60°. All of the observed velocity distributions were narrower than Maxwellian distributions with the same average energies. Product velocity distributions did not appear to vary with surface temperature. The observed excess energies are believed to arise from the crossing of the activation barrier to reaction, with a fraction of the reaction energy being carried away from the surface by the product molecules.

Notizen: Objective To determine the risk of recurrent cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) in women with complete or incomplete excision of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia treated by large loop excision of transformation zone (LLETZ).Design A retrospective studySetting One consultant-led colposcopy clinic at Leicester Royal InfirmaryPopulation Three hundred and ninety-four women referred consecutively to the colposcopy clinic between 1991 and 1992.Main outcome measures The histological recurrence rate of CIN, length of cytological follow up following treatment related to degree of completeness of excision at initial treatment. Results Three hundred and twenty-two women had complete cytological or histological follow up. The mean length of follow up was 73 months with a mean number of six smears. Women with incomplete excision of CIN had a significantly higher risk of recurrent CIN (relative risk 8.23) occurring in a significantly shorter time compared with women with complete excision. Conclusions This study demonstrates that large loop excision of transformation zone is successful in over 95% of cases. Cytological surveillance is satisfactory for follow up of women who have complete excision of CIN. Women with incomplete excision of CIN at initial LLETZ remain at significant risk of developing further CIN and long term colposcopic and cytological follow up is necessary.

Notizen: Recent reports of the isolation of infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV) from Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., affected by haemorrhagic kidney syndrome (HKS) suggest that ISAV can cause severe renal haemorrhage and necrosis in addition to well-known pathognomonic hepatocellular necrosis and haemorrhage. The prevalence of ISAV-induced pathognomonic renal HKS lesions and their correlation to pathognomonic hepatic lesions of infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) is not known. The present experimental infection of Atlantic salmon with a Canadian isolate of ISAV found that pathognomonic hepatic ISA lesions were present in 90.6% and pathognomonic renal HKS lesions in 78.1% of fish which died after the experimental challenge. Both pathognomonic hepatic ISA lesions and pathognomonic renal HKS lesions were found together in 65.6% of fish which died after ISAV challenge. The present study clearly demonstrates that ISAV can cause a very high prevalence of both HKS and ISA pathognomonic lesions.

Notizen: Abstract Treating iron-doped ZSM-5 zeolite with NO2 produced a complete change in the parameters of its 57Fe Mössbauer spectrum. The intensity of the absorption showed a dramatic decrease at 40–70 K with smooth, but anharmonic, behavior above this temperature. The results can be interpreted in terms of the modification of the iron environment to form an approximately square-well potential. This results in an asymmetric potential in which the iron becomes frozen in one region at low temperatures.

Notizen: Abstract To investigate the influence of age, race, and gender on the cellular immune system, we determined T-cell, B-cell, monocyte, natural killer (NK)-cell, and HLA-DR+-cell subsets in 266 nonsmokers from a population-based random sample of healthy adults using monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry. Blacks had a lower total white blood-cell count than whites (P≤0.0001), due primarily to a decrease in granulocytes. There was no significant difference in absolute lymphocyte count between blacks and whites. Blacks had a higher proportion of CD19+ cells (Leu 12+ B cells) and a lower proportion of CD3+ cells (OKT3+ T cells) than whites (P≤0.01). Female sex and increasing age were independently associated with an increased percentage of CD4+ cells (OKT4A+ helper-inducer T-cell subset), resulting in a higher helper/suppressor ratio among women and older individuals (P≤0.05). Black race and increasing age were independently associated with an increased proportion of HLA-DR+ cells (P≤0.0001) which was not attributable to B cells or monocytes. No significant age, race, or gender effects were observed for CD14+ cells (Leu M3+ monocytes) or CD16+ cells (Leu 11A+ natural killer cells). These data demonstrate that age, race, and gender are each associated with significant differences in peripheral blood monouclear-cell subsets. Population-based data such as these provide an important foundation for future design and interpretation of human flow cytometry data.

Notizen: Abstract Despite extensive knowledge of many muscle A-band proteins (myosin molecules, titin, C-protein (MyBP-C)), details of the organization of these molecules to form myosin filaments remain unclear. Recently the myosin head (crossbridge) configuration in a relaxed vertebrate muscle was determined from low-angle X-ray diffraction (Hudson et al. (1997), J Mol Biol 273: 440–455). This showed that, even without C-protein, the myosin head array displays a characteristic polar pattern with every third 143 Å-spaced crossbridge level particularly prominent. However, X-ray diffraction cannot determine the polarity of the crossbridge array relative to the neighbouring actin filaments; information crucial to a proper understanding of the contractile event. Here, electron micrographs of negatively-stained goldfish A-segments and of fast-frozen, freeze-fractured plaice A-bands have been used to determine the resting myosin head polarity relative to the M-band. In agreement with the X-ray data, the prominent 429 Å-spaced striations are seen outside the C-zone, where no non-myosin proteins apart from titin are thought to be located. The head orientation is with the concave side of the curved myosin heads (containing the entrance to the ATP-binding site) facing towards the M-band and the convex surface (containing the actin-binding region at one end) facing away from the M-band.
