Notizen: A number of percutaneous dilational tracheostomy devices are now available for clinical use. Recently, a new percutaneous dilational tracheostomy device, the ‘T-Dagger™’ (Criticure Invasives, India), has been introduced for rapid bedside percutaneous tracheostomy. In a prospective preliminary study, we have performed percutaneous dilational tracheostomy (PDT) using the T-Dagger™ in 20 adult ventilated patients in order to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the new device. The T-Dagger™ facilitated bedside PDT in about 3 min with no untoward incidents. There was no significant bleeding, pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, tracheal wall injuries or difficulty in ventilation in any of the patients. We conclude that the T-Dagger™ shows early promise in bedside percutaneous dilational tracheostomy. However, controlled studies are required in a larger patient population before it can be recommended for routine use.

Notizen: The K-D2 point is the Korean hand acupressure point in Koryo Hand Therapy for prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting. We evaluated the efficacy of capsaicin ointment at the K-D2 point in 186 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a randomised, prospective, double-blind and placebo-controlled study. Patients were randomised to have either placebo ointment or capsaicin ointment applied to the K-D2 point of both hands 1 h before surgery under standardised anaesthesia. The ointment was removed 8 h later. Postoperative nausea and vomiting was evaluated 6 and 24 h following surgery. The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting was lower in the capsaicin group, with an absolute risk reduction (ARR) of 21%, a relative risk reduction (RRR) of 50% and a number-needed-to-treat (NNT) of 5 at 0–6 h (p = 0.001), and an ARR of 11%, a RRR of 85% and a NNT of 9 at 6–24 h (p = 0.003). The need for rescue anti-emetic treatment was also lower at 0–6 h (3 (3%) vs 11 (12%); p = 0.04) and at 6–24 h (5 (5%) vs 0; p = 0.02).

Notizen: Abstract The action of copper (CuSO4, 5mg/kg, oral) on selected neuropharmacological actions of cannabis resin (CI, oral) was studied on albino rats and mice. Copper potentiated the barbiturate hypnosispotentiating activity of CI in albino rats and mice and had no effect on hypothermic activity in albino rats. Single doses of copper partially inhibited tolerance to barbiturate hypnosis-potentiation activity and markedly delayed the development of tolerance to hypothermic activity of CI. Oral as well as i.c.v. copper (CuSO4, 0.1 μg) in single dose antagonised the tolerance to hypothermic activity of cannabis or THC for to two weeks. Copper-CI interaction could be antagonised by penicillamine. Zinc (ZnSO4, 5 mg/kg, oral) had an action similar to that of copper in antagonising the development of tolerance to the hypothermic activity of CI, but magnesium (MgSO4, 5 mg/kg, i.p.) was devoid of any such action. Studies indicate that, although copper has no significant neuropharmacological action, it interacts with CI activity, especially in tolerant rats, in effects on hypothermia. The site of action of copper is possibly the hypothalamus, where it inhibits the processes of tolerance development to CI on the noradrenergic neurone.

Notizen: Abstract Lysogens were isolated after confluent lysis of the blue-green algaNostoc muscorum by N-1 virus and characterised. The spontaneous liberation of active virus particles in lysogens was not lost after treating them with viricidal concentration of EDTA and virus titre obtained in their cultures was 〉5×103 PFU/ml. The virus adsorbed on the lysogens with a slower rate than on parent alga, although it followed the pattern of a first order reaction. The heat treatment (45°C for 14h) of the lysogens failed to induce lysis, whereas mitomycin C (1–2 μg/ml) was effective in inducing lysis.

Notizen: Summary Effect of commercial grade pesticide furadan (3% a.i. as carbofuran) was studied on the survival, growth and nitrogen fixation of blue-green algaNostoc muscorum. The lower concentration of furadan i.e. 25 μg/ml enhanced survival, growth and nitrogen fixation in the alga whereas these were gradually inhibited in higher concentrations (50–1000 μ/ml) and the presence of more than 1200 μg/ml was algicidal. The preliminary observations revealed that pesticide is biodegraded by the alga.

Notizen: Abstract The adsorption rate of the cyanovirus N-1 infecting the nitrogen-fixing blue-green alga Nostoc muscorum decreased with aging of algal cultures and the virus failed to adsorb to the dead host cells. The adsorption rate declined in saline magnesium chloride solution compared to that in algal growth medium. The addition of amino acids like L-tryptophan and L-phenylalanine failed to enhance the adsorption rate of the virus. Optimal pH of adsorption was 7.6 to 8.1.

Notizen: Summary The reversion of N-1 virus resistant strain of the algaNostoc muscorum was studied by inoculating parent virus in the resistant culture at various incubations. A fraction of virus resistant cells reverted to wild sensitive type with the reversion rate of 3.99×10−6/cell/generation.

Notizen: Abstract Frequencies are computed for transitions in the SiH+ and SiH molecules which are expected to occur in the millimeter region usually covered by radiowave astronomy. These molecules are expected to be in low-temperature sources whose state temperatures are not greater than about 20 K. On the basis of binary gas-phase reactions, the formation and destruction of the SiH+ and the SiH radicals are also discussed.
