    Notes: Background   A keloid is a specific skin lesion that expands beyond the boundaries of the original injury as it heals. Histologically, it is characterized by the excessive accumulation of collagen. However, the reasons for the expansion and the invasive nature of keloids remain unknown.Objectives  We evaluated collagen degradation and migration by cultured keloid fibroblasts based on the assumption that these variables were of functional relevance to the expanding and invasive nature of keloid lesions.Methods  Collagen production was investigated by the detection of type 1 collagen (procollagen type 1C peptide: P1P). Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 (interstitial collagenase) and MMP-2 (gelatinase-A), were investigated as elements of the collagen degradation system. Enzyme immunoassays were performed to measure the production of P1P, MMP-1, MMP-2, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1. To assess the production of MMP-2 its gelatinolytic activity was measured by zymography using gelatin-containing gels. The participation of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) in the production and degradation of collagen was also investigated. Finally, the migratory activity of keloid fibroblasts was evaluated using a colony dispersion assay.Results  The production of type 1 collagen, MMP-1, MMP-2, and TIMP-1 by keloid fibroblasts was 3-fold, 6-fold, 2·4-fold, and 2-fold greater than that of normal dermal fibroblasts, respectively. Production of P1P was increased when TGF-β1 was added to cultures of keloid fibroblasts, while it was decreased when anti-TGF-β1 antibody was added to the cultures. In contrast, the production of MMP-1 was decreased by the addition of TGF-β1 to cultured keloid fibroblasts, while it was increased when anti-TGF-β1 antibody was added to the cultures. The production of MMP-2 increased after treatment with TGF-β1, but did not change significantly when anti-TGF-β1 antibody was added to the cultures. Production of TIMP-1 did not change significantly when either TGF-β1 or anti-TGF-β1 antibody was added to the cultures. Keloid fibroblasts showed a 2·5-fold increase of migratory activity compared with normal dermal fibroblasts, while the migratory activity of these fibroblasts was reduced to the control level by treatment with a broad-spectrum MMP inhibitor (GM 6001).Conclusions  Cultured keloid fibroblasts showed increased production of collagen and MMPs, and TGF-β1 played a role in this regulation of production. In addition, increased production of MMPs had a role in the high migratory activity of cultured keloid fibroblasts.

    Notes: The bifurcation nature of the electrostatic structure is studied in the toroidal helical plasma of the Compact Helical System (CHS) [K. Matsuoka et al., Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, Nice, 1988 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1989), Vol. 2, p. 411]. Observation of bifurcation-related phenomena is introduced, such as characteristic patterns of discrete potential profiles, and various patterns of self-sustained oscillations termed electric pulsation. Some patterns of the electrostatic structure are found to be quite important for fusion application owing to their association with transport barrier formation. It is confirmed, as is shown in several tokamak experiments, that the thermal transport barrier is linked with electrostatic structure through the radial electric field shear that can reduce the fluctuation resulting in anomalous transport. This article describes in detail spatio-temporal evolution during self-sustained oscillation, together with correlation between the radial electric field and other plasma parameters. An experimental survey to find dependence of the temporal and spatial patterns on plasma parameters is performed in order to understand systematically the bifurcation property of the toroidal helical plasma. The experimental results are compared with the neoclassical bifurcation property that is believed to explain the observed bifurcation property of the CHS plasmas. The present results show that the electrostatic property plays an essential role in the structural formation of toroidal helical plasmas, and demonstrate that toroidal plasma is an open system with a strong nonlinearity to provide a new attractive problem to be studied. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In order to efficiency obtain a two-dimensional (2D) image in the 3 THz range, it is important to develop a 2D far-infrared detector array. We have developed a gallium-doped germanium (Ge:Ga) far-infrared photoconductor that has a longitudinal configuration. This structure is suitable for a large format monolithic 2D array. In this letter, we show that a transparent electrode that is responsive in the far-infrared range can be formed by ion implantation, and this layer contributed to increasing quantum efficiency. We obtained a high responsivity (16.2 A/W) and good noise equivalent power (2.6×10−17 W/Hz1/2) of Ge:Ga photoconductor in longitudinal configuration by combination of ion-implanted layers and Ge:Ga bulk material. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A GaAs junction field-effect transistor (JFET) is a promising candidate for low-frequency, low-noise, and low-power cryogenic electronics to read out high-impedance photodetectors. We report on the spectral noise characteristics of a SONY n-type GaAs JFET, operating at the depression mode, at a cryogenic temperature of 4.2 K. If the GaAs JFET is turned on at 4.2 K, a random telegraph signal (RTS) is found to be the dominant noise source at low frequencies. However, the switching rate of RTS can be drastically reduced if the GaAs JFET is heated up to 55 K and cooled down again to 4.2 K while keeping the same drain current flow. We refer to this phenomenon as the thermal cure (TC). With TC, low-frequency noise can be reduced to below 1 μV/Hz1/2 at 1 Hz. The critical temperature for TC is found to be ∼35 K for our GaAs JFET. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: Elastic scattering and inclusive breakup of 6Li particles on 12C, 58Ni, 90Zr, and 208Pb targets are measured at 100A MeV. The elastic scattering data are compared with single channel and Coupled Discretized Continuum Channels calculations. The coupling-effect between the elastic and the breakup channels is important even at an incident energy of 100A MeV and cannot be neglected. The inclusive breakup data are investigated for orbital dispersion effects which are found to be less significant at 100A MeV. The longitudinal momentum distributions are broader than predicted by theoretical expectations.

    Notes: Abstract  The apparent molar volume and the apparent molar adiabatic compressibility of the sugar-based surfactants methyl 6-O-octanoyl-α-d-glucopyranoside (α-MOnG), methyl 6-O-octanoyl-β-d-glucopyranoside (β-MOnG), and octyl β-d-glucoside were measured over a wide concentration range. Also, the aggregation number of their micelles was determined from the Debye plot using static light scattering data. It was found that the micellar aggregation number for α-MOnG is 179 at 35 °C, which is 1.5 times larger than that for β-MOnG, suggesting that the anomerism of the head group influences the packing of the monomers during micelle formation.

    Notes: Abstract We have developed a 4 × 8 array of stressed Ge:Ga detectors. This array detector has a high density format ofentrance pupils so that we can minimize the size of the cameraoptics. The cutoff wavelength of the detector is about 170 μm, and the detector's NEP is better than 1016 WHz-1/2. We are going apply this array detector toballoon-borne astronomical observations. Furthermore, we aredeveloping this detector into a 5 × 15 array detector that will be placed onboard the IRIS satellite to be launched in 2003.
