Notizen: An underground gravity study was carried out under extreme conditions of the Alpine regions. The lead–zinc mine Bleiberg, Carinthia, was selected as an example to show the possibilities and limitations of the subsurface gravity method. For in situ density determinations, gravity measurements were made in two vertical mine shafts passing through Triassic sedimentary rocks of the Bleiberg Unit. The main prblem in gravity data reduction in extremely rugged topography is the accurate calculation of the terrain effect on underground stations. A general discussion of the various corrections required for the gravity measurements in the mine is presented. The mean interval densities in the two shafts, in limestone, dolomite, and schists formations, were determined as 2.76 and 2.77 g/cm3, respectively, with an accuracy of better than 0.01 g/cm3 for a depth interval of 50 m. The interval densities provide valuable information about the lithological and structural changes in the shaft surroundings and also agree well with the representative hand sample densities. In the second part, the applications of subsurface horizontal gravity surveys in exploration are discussed. Since the influence of topography is less underground because of the greater distance to the surface, subsurface surveys have definite advantages over surface surveys and can be very helpful in locating anomalous density zones in the mines. An example of gravity survey with a station spacing of 10 m at a depth of about 540 m is presented.

Notizen: Summary InBlaberus fuscus, combined light/dark-warm/cold cycles induce a rhythm of moulting. Most of the moults take place in the middle of the dark cold phases. Because of a stable phase-relation between moulting time and endocuticle growth rhythm, the latter is synchronized with the environmental cycles, too; lamellated layers are deposited during the light warm phases, which correspond to the time of resting of the cockroaches. Therefore, the cuticle growth is internally synchronized with rhythmic locomotory activity and metabolic rhythms.

Notizen: Summary Cell-free translation of salivary gland RNA or of purified Balbiani ring RNA (75S) in a reticulocyte lysate system gives rise to high molecular weight translational products (HMTP). In addition to a common size (approx. 1×106 daltons) HMTP share imunogenic determinants with the giant secretory proteins of salivary glands. This suggests that HMTP correspond to in vivo secreted proteins and thus, corroborates the notion that 75S-RNA is the messenger for these proteins. The time course of HMTP synthesis and the lack of appearance of lower molecular weight components as translational products of 75S-RNA indicate that the synthesis of HMTP (and of secretory proteins) occurs in one piece by an uninterrupted process. HMTP are regarded the largest polypeptides so far synthesized in a cell-free system.

Notizen: Abstract A purified plant lectin, phytohemagglutinin (PHA), or crude red kidney bean (RKB) from which it was derived, when incorporated as 1% of dietary protein into a purified casein protein diet caused weanling rats to fail to grow or lose weight in comparison to control animals pair fed an isonitrogenous, isocaloric diet. Feeding PHA was observed to cause diarrhea: fecal wet and dry weights were increased within 2 days after starting the diet. Increased fecal weight was caused by increased dry weight as well as by an increased fecal water content. On reversion to a normal casein diet, rapid amelioration of the antinutritional effects of PHA occurred with resumption of normal growth rate. Specific binding of PHA to the microvillus region of the small intestinal epithelium was demonstrated using rabbit anti-PHA and fluorescein-labeled goat anti-rabbit immunoglobulin. PHA binding was observed after chronic intake in the diet or when applied to normal tissuein vitro. Loss of PHA binding to the intestine was observed to occur within 48 hr on reversion to a control casein diet. No significant morphological damage to the microvilli or the mucosal villus architecture was observed to accompany PHA adherence under these experimental conditions. Antinutritional and antiabsorptive effects of dietary PHA were associated with diarrhea. PHA adhered to the microvillus membrane of the small intestinal villus surface during the diarrheal state. After cessation of dietary PHA intake, weight gain and growth was accompanied by loss of PHA adherence to the small bowel mucosal surface. Adherence of PHA to the intestinal mucosal surface was an important cause of the nutritional and malabsorptive changes observed.

Notizen: Summary Seventeen male physical education students performed three types of treadmill exercise: (1) progressive exercise to exhaustion, (2) prolonged exercise of 50 min duration at the anaerobic threshold of 4 mmol·1−1 blood lactate (AE), (3) a single bout of short-term high-intensity exercise at 156% of maximal exercise capacity in the progressive test, leading to exhaustion within 1.5 min (ANE). Immediately before and after ANE and before, during, and after AE adrenalin, noradrenalin, growth hormone, cortisol, insulin, testosterone, and oestradiol were determined in venous blood, and glucose and lactate were determined in arterialized blood from the earlobe. Adrenalin and noradrenalin increased 15 fold during ANE and 3–4 fold and 6–9 fold respectively during AE. The adrenalin/noradrenalin ratio was 1∶3 during ANE and 1∶10 during AE. Cortisol increased by 35% in ANE (12% of which appeared in the postexercise period) and 54% in AE. Insulin increased during ANE but decreased during AE. Testosterone and oestradiol increased by 14% and 16% during ANE and by 22% and 28% during AE. The results point to a markedly higher emotional stress and higher sympatho-adrenal activity in anaerobic exercise. Growth hormone and cortisol appear to be the more affected by intense prolonged exercise. Taking plasma volume changes and changes of metabolic clearance rates into consideration, neither of the exercise tests appeared to affect secretion of testosterone and oestradiol.
