Notes: Abstract A sensitive analytical method was established for the determination of Th and U in activated concrete samples. The method combines an anion-exchange separation step with an ICP-MS determination technique. In the ICP-MS measurement, a few μg mL–1 of Al and Ca, a few ng mL–1 of Mn, La, Ce, Nd and Pb and pg mL–1 amounts of Li, Zr, Nb and Ba coexisting in the anion-exchange fraction of Th and U did not interfere. No adverse interference effects were observed in real sample analyses. The obtained detection limits (3σ, n = 10) of Th and U were 2.3 and 1.8 pg mL–1, respectively. The analytical precisions for ca. 5 μg g–1 Th and ca. 1 μg g–1 U in real activated concrete samples were equally less than 7% RSD. The accuracies obtained by the analysis of GSJ rock standard samples were –18.1 to 0.4% for the Th determination and –14.0 to –5.7% for the U determination. The method uses the conventional absolute calibration curve. The internal standard calibration is unnecessary.

Notes: The contrast of electron microscope lattice images of a vanadium monosulphide with superstructures was dynamically calculated on the basis of the multislice method. Interactions of 80 waves were analysed. It was shown that the vacancy-rich vanadium sites were imaged as white spots not only at the very thin part but also at the thicker part inside the first equal-thickness contour, which appeared at the thickness of 60 Å. A non-stoichiometric vanadium monosulphide, VS1.155, quenched imperfectly from the preparation temperature at 1217 °C, was examined on the basis of the lattice image observation by a 100 kV high-resolution electron microscope. Orderings in the inter- as well as intralayers could be recognized directly from the arrangement of the white spots. Interpretable lattice images appeared exclusively inside the first equal-thickness contour. A mixture of some different types of images was observed in a crystal fragment; in some band-like regions the 4C-type superstructure was found with almost the same structure as Fe7S8. Each band extended parallel to the (001) plane with thickness of at most 50 Å and the orientation was in a twin relation to that of the adjoining one. The other regions showed less well-defined lattice images, although they gave the broad diffraction peaks ranging from the 4C- to 3C-type reflexions. In order to determine the phase relations at high temperatures the specimen was heated by focusing an electron beam on the portion slightly apart from the area under examination. The technique enabled us to observe only the heating effect. Upon heating, the 4C type first increased in volume, seen by the thickening of some bands. On further heating the 3C type increased in intensity on the diffraction pattern. The structure of the 3C type was estimated to be almost the same as Fe7Se8 except that the vacancy concentration fuctuated among the partially occupied vanadium layers.

Notes: Serial sections, prepared from 0.5 to 30 days posthatch (dph) larval and juvenile Thunnus orientalis (Temminck & Schlegel 1844), were stained with haematoxylin and eosin and examined by light microscopy for immune organ development. The early kidney was present at 0.5 dph, undifferentiated stem cells began to appear at 2 dph, and by 7 dph occasional small lymphocytes were present. The thymus was first obvious at 5 dph, located above the fourth branchial arch, small lymphocytes appeared at 7 dph, and by 15 dph an outer thymocytic zone and an inner epithelioid zone were visible. The progenitor spleen was present at 2 dph, located close to the gut, and by 12 dph it consisted of a mass of sinusoids filled with red blood cells, and remained mainly erythroid throughout the period studied. These results suggest that development of immune organs in this species is precocious relative to other marine teleosts.

Notes: A dwarfing effect of the 44.1 cM chromosomal region between the threshability gene Q and Xfba068 on the long arm of hexaploid wheat chromosome 5A has been reported. To clarify whether Q or its adjacent region is responsible for regulating culm elongation, two precise genetic stocks of near-isogenic lines (NIL), a single chromosome substitution line, ‘Chinese Spring’ (CS; ‘Cappelle-Desprez’ 5A) (NIL-Q) and a single chromosome recombinant substitution line (NIL-q) were used. The target segment of NIL-q included the q allele and QEet.ocs-5A.1, an earlinessper se gene, from spelt wheat in the CS genetic background. They were grown under 16-h day length with and/ or without vernalization treatment. Being independent of heading date, NIL-Q showed shorter elongation in lower internodes and decreased internode differentiation in comparison with NIL-q. The culm-length reduction associated with Q was confirmed in the recombinant F5 population derived from the cross between NIL-Q and NIL-q. Vernalization promotion had a tendency to reduce this dwarfing effect.

Notes: QEet.ocs-5A.1, a quantitative trait locus controlling ear emergence time, has been detected on wheat chromosome 5AL using single chromosome recombinant lines (SCRs) developed from a cross between ‘Chinese Spring’ (CS) (‘Cappelle-Desprez’ 5A) and CS (Triticum spelta 5A). This locus has little influence on grain yield and its components, and thus has breeding potential for changing ear emergence time without yield reduction. To characterize the phenotypic expression of QEet.ocs.1 and to test its interaction with the Vrn-A1 gene for vernalization response, six near-isogenic SCRs differing for these two gene regions were grown together with the parental controls under different vernalization and photoperiod regimes. The T. spelta allele of QEet.ocs.1 accelerated heading time when vernalization and photoperiod were satisfied, demonstrating that the function of this QTL is earliness per se. There was no interaction between Vrn-A1 and QEet.ocs.1.

Notes: Effects of the resistant cultivars of melon on the powdery mildew fungus, Sphaerotheca fuliginea, were investigated in a melon-growing area of Japan. Powdery mildew fungi were isolated from four melon cultivars (‘HN21’, ‘Quincy’, ‘Earl's Knight Natsu 2’ and ‘Earl's Miyabi Natsu 2′) which are resistant to different races of S. fuliginea.‘HN21’is resistant to races 1 and N1,‘Quincy’ and ‘Earl's Knight Natsu 2’are resistant to races 1 and N2, and ‘Earl's Miyabi Natsu 2’is resistant to races 1, N1 and N2. All 155 strains isolated from ‘HN21’were identified as race N2. Seventy out of 81 strains isolated from ‘Quincy’ and ‘Earl's Knight Natsu 2’were identified as race N1, while other strains were identified as races 1, 2US, N2 and N3. Nineteen out of 29 strains isolated from ‘Earl's Miyabi Natsu 2’were identified as race N3, while other strains were identified as races 10, 2US, N1 and N4. These results suggest that, although the resistant cultivars are extremely effective for protecting the plants from their respective races, a race succession rapidly takes place, even in a small area, and other minor races become predominant.

Notes: A technique for measuring negative-ion density in high-density plasmas used for materials processing has been developed; negative ions were detected by measuring the electron-density perturbation caused by laser photodetachment using a millimeter-wave open resonator. The measured negative-ion density for an inductively-coupled C4F8(5%–20%)/Ar plasma with electron densities around 1011 cm−3 at a pressure of 25 mTorr was comparable to the electron density. The results suggest that species produced via dissociation of C4F8 attaches electrons as effectively as C4F8. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We previously demonstrated the circadian variation of water-immersion restraint stress (WRS)-induced gastric mucosal lesions in rats.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To investigate the roles of melatonin and prostaglandin in the gastric mucosa in circadian modulation of WRS.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Fasted rats were subjected to 4-h WRS during both the diurnal and nocturnal phases of a light/dark cycle. Mucosal lesions, serum melatonin concentrations, mucosal generation of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and mucosal gene expressions of cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and -2 were evaluated.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Lesion area after 4-h stress during the dark phase was significantly smaller than that in light-phase controls. Serum melatonin concentration in control rats during the light phase was significantly increased 4 h after WRS, but PGE2 generation was decreased by 48% as compared to that in intact mucosa before stress. In the dark phase, melatonin concentration after 4-h WRS was significantly depressed as compared with the control level at the corresponding time. PGE2 concentrations after 4-h WRS in the dark phase were not decreased compared with the control level at the corresponding time, although PGE2 level was significantly lower than that in light-phase controls. Expression of COX-1 and COX-2 mRNA was detected after exposure to stress in both the light and dark phases.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:These results suggest that circadian rhythm has an important role in the formation of stress-induced gastric mucosal lesions in rats. The circadian rhythm of melatonin responses and PGE2 generation may contribute to nocturnal/diurnal rhythmicity of gastric mucosal defences between day and night.

Notes: The role of acid secretion in reflux oesophagitis which may develop after H. pylori eradication is not well known.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To investigate the participation of altered gastric acid secretion and the presence of hiatal hernia in the development of reflux oesophagitis after eradication therapy for H. pylori.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Subjects and Methods:A total of 105 patients with H. pylori infection, but without reflux oesophagitis at the time of eradication therapy, were followed prospectively for 7 months after the clearance of this microorganism. Gastric acid secretion was assessed by endoscopic gastrin test, and the presence of hiatal hernia by endoscopy.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Reflux oesophagitis developed in 11 out of 105 (10.5%) patients when examined at 7 months after the eradication therapy. The incidence was correlated significantly with the increase in gastric acid secretion after the eradication of H. pylori, and was significantly higher in the patients with hiatal hernia (20%) than in those without it (0%).〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:Increased acid secretion after H. pylori eradication is an important risk factor of reflux oesophagitis, especially in patients with hiatal hernia.
