    Notizen: A high-accuracy finite-difference time-domain method based on what are called nonstandard finite differences was used to simulate optical propagation in a two-dimensional photonic crystal with a point defect. We used a photonic crystal consisting of a triangular lattice of air columns embedded in a high-refractive index medium. We found that the transmittance spectrum has four peaks in the photonic band-gap region, and that these peaks correspond to the resonant energies of light localized at the point defect. For a point defect consisting of an air hole with a radius smaller than that of the air holes of the photonic crystal, these peaks shift to higher energy. The peak shift of the resonant mode that is associated with the electric field concentrated about the center of the point defect is larger than the peak shift of the other modes. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Amounts of spontaneous spin splittings were estimated from low-temperature magnetoresistances in two-dimensional electron gases created at In0.75Ga0.25As/In0.75Al0.25As heterojunctions under a gate bias. Typical sheet electron densities and mobilities in the raw wafers were ∼1.0×1012/cm2 and 2–5×105 cm2/V s at 1.5 K, respectively. A maximum spin-orbit coupling constant αzero of ∼30(×10−12 eV m) was obtained for the van der Pauw sample. In gated Hall-bar samples, a decrease in the αzero value with decreasing gate voltage (Vg) was first confirmed in a normal heterojunction. The main origin for such a large αzero, which is a few times larger than any previously reported, was found to be a structure-dependent so-called interface contribution in the Rashba term. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) is not only dedicated to cancer therapy, it is also utilized with various ion species for basic experiments of biomedical science, physics, chemistry, etc. Two electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources are installed for production of gaseous ions. One of them, the NIRS-ECR, is a 10 GHz ECR ion source, and is mainly operated to produce C4+ ions for daily clinical treatment. This source realizes good reproducibility and reliability and it is easily operated. The other source, the NIRS-HEC, is an 18 GHz ECR ion source that is expected to produce heavier ion species. The output ion currents of the NIRS-ECR and the NIRS-HEC are 430e μA for C4+ and 1.1e mA for Ar8+, respectively. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: An observation of light propagation in a two-dimensional photonic crystal-based (2D–PC) optical waveguide is reported. Bent waveguides with a bending angle of 60° embedded in a 2D–PC triangular lattice with air columns were fabricated on a molecular-beam epitaxially grown AlGaAs/GaAs structure. The light-propagation characteristics were examined by observing scattered light from PC regions with incident light in the 850–950 nm range under an optical microscope using a charge coupled device camera. The incident light was strongly guided for wavelengths corresponding to the photonic band gap. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The power loss (Pcv) was analyzed by combining two methods. The first, Pcv, is divided into hysteresis loss (Ph) and residual loss (Pr) from the frequency dependence of the power loss according to the method of Otsuki et al., and, second, the loss factors are attributed to domain wall motion (Pw) and the rotation magnetization (Prot) by adapting the method proposed by Visser et al. It was found that Pw coincides with Ph in the lower frequency range, but the difference between them becomes significant as frequency goes up. The higher value of Pw, in comparison with Ph in the higher frequency range, can be attributed to the enhancement of loss due to the dynamic motion of the domain wall (Pwd) by raising the frequency. The hysteresis loss dominates Pcv in the frequency range below 500 kHz, while Pwd becomes predominant factor in the higher frequency range more than 500 kHz. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Since the narrowly concentrated ion-density distribution enhances the space charge effects, the extracted beam intensity is lower than case with a uniform distribution. In order to realize the uniform ion-density distribution at the extraction aperture for the higher beam intensity, the radial magnetic field given by the permanent sextupole magnet has been optimized. The ion-density distribution estimated by the TRAPCAD code depends on the magnetic trap configuration. The diameter of the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) zone determined by the inner diameter of the sextupole magnet was enlarged, and consequently the density of the flux lines running through the ECR zone decreased at the extraction aperture. The ion-density distribution could become more uniform. The inner diameter of the sextupole magnet of an 18 GHz ECR ion source for the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences was increased from 46 to 66 mm, so that the extracted intensities of Ar8+ and Ar9+ ions increased from 250 and 150 e μA to 1100 and 650 e μA, respectively. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Carbon–ion cancer treatment is successfully being made at the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). Design philosophy for the ion sources for medical facilities are as follows: (1) sufficient beam intensity, a few hundred e μA; (2) long lifetime with good stability; (3) easy operation and easy maintenance; and (4) compactness. In order to develop such source for future heavy-ion facilities, we have tested compact electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources using permanent magnets both for axial and radial confinement of hot electrons. Since the yield of C2+ ion in the first developed source (2.45 GHz ECR) was 15 e μA and far below the medical requirement (∼150 e μA for the HIMAC), a new source has been proposed, having a frequency of 10 GHz. The extracted intensity of C4+ (and C2+) ions is expected to be higher than 200 e μA. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the prevention of calcium influx through L-type calcium channels contributed to the attenuation of muscular atrophy induced by hindlimb immobilization (HI) in a shortened position. Mice were divided into four groups (8 mice/group): control; nifedipine; HI; and HI with nifedipine. Mice received nifedipine at a dose of 5 mg/kg one day before and during the 8 days of HI. Quantitative alterations in the amount of myosin heavy chain (MyHC) and actin proteins in the soleus muscle were analyzed using SDS-PAGE. The weight of the soleus muscle decreased significantly by 40.8% (P〈0.05) and 27.0% (P〈0.05) after the hindlimb immobilization in the HI and HI with nifedipine groups, respectively, when compared to that of the control or nifedipine groups. Treatment with nifedipine alone appeared to have no effect on muscle mass or the amount of myofibrillar proteins. The level of MyHC proteins decreased significantly by 25.1% (P〈0.001) and 17.4% (P〈0.001) in the HI and HI with nifedipine groups, respectively. The level of MyHC protein in the HI with nifedipine group was significantly greater than that of the HI group (P〈0.05), although there were no significant differences in the amount of actin protein. These findings suggest that nifedipine treatment may have a beneficial effect on muscular atrophy.

    Notizen: We describe two Japanese female patients with pigmented extramammary Paget’s disease (EMPD); one patient had a dark brown plaque and the other had a reddish patch with a pigmented area, both affecting the vulval region. Histochemical and immunohistochemical examinations confirmed EMPD with melanocyte colonization; plump tumour cells with a large nucleus and pale cytoplasm that were positive for CAM 5.2 and CEA proliferated singly or in nests in the epidermis, and scattered among the tumour cells were many dendritic cells with a large amount of melanin that were positive for HMB-45 and S-100 protein. Fontana–Masson (FM) stain showed many positive cells with well-developed dendritic processes within and around tumour nests. Histochemical and immunohistochemical studies of non-pigmented EMPD cases on the same region showed that HMB-45 positive cells were sparse or not detected at all, and that also FM staining-positive cells were decreased or not detected, and their dendritic processes were poorly formed. The present study suggests that there might be heterogeneity in EMPD in terms of relationships between Paget’s cells and melanocytes.
