    Notes: Abstract —We compiled 67 large earthquakes which occurred at and around plate boundaries for the last 140 yrs, and classified them into four groups; interplate strike-slip events, intraplate strike-slip events, underthrust events at island-arc subduction zones, and underthrust events at continental-margin subduction zones. For each group of earthquakes we examined relations between seismic moment M 0, fault length L, fault width W and average fault slip D, and found the following scaling laws. In the case of interplate strike-slip events, the well-known L-cubed dependence of seismic moment breaks down when L exceeds 30 km, because the extent of the seismogenic zone is limited in depth (≤12 km). For large events (L≥ 30 km), D and M 0 increase with L as $D=\overline {\rm \Delta \tau}L /\mu (\alpha L+\beta )$ and $M_{0}=\overline {\rm \Delta \tau W}L^{2} / (\alpha L+\beta)$ , respectively, where the mean fault width $\overline {W}$ is 12 km and the mean stress drop $\overline {\rm \Delta \tau}$ is 1.8 MPa. Here μ, α and β are structural parameters. For intraplate strike-slip events we obtained nearly the same relations, except for significantly higher stress drop (3.1 MPa). The difference in stress drop between interplate and intraplate events may be ascribed to the difference in stress accumulation rates and thus the recurrence time of earthquakes. In the case of underthrust events at island-arc subduction zones we also found the saturation of fault width ( $\overline {W}$ = 120 km) and the breakaway from the L-cubed dependence of M 0 for events larger than L = 200 km. If we consider the average dip-angle of plate boundaries at island-arc subduction zones to be 20–30°, this indicates that the extent of the seismogenic zone in depth is limited to 40–60 km. In the case of continental-margin subduction zones, on the other hand, we could not find the saturation of fault width nor the breakaway from the L-cubed dependence of M 0 from the analysis of the present data set (W≤ 200 km, L≤ 1000 km). For sufficiently large earthquakes, in general, the downward rupture growth is limited to a certain depth due to the existence of a ductile unstressed region which extends under the brittle seismogenic zone. Since the brittle-ductile transition occurs at 300–400°C, the difference in the lower limit of the seismogenic zones between tectonically different regions may be attributed to the difference in thermal state there.

    Notes: Summary ¶ The aim of this study was to assess the growth of incidental meningiomas, to establish a strategy for dealing with these tumours.  The cases of 37 patients with a meningioma revealed incidentally by computerized tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, who were followed at least once by an additional imaging study, were reviewed. The tumour volume was calculated, to estimate the annual growth rate of the incidental meningiomas. Nine of the 37 patients (24.3%) showed a considerable increase (the annual growth rate〉1 cu cm/year) in their tumour volume (tumour growth). There was no significant difference in the follow-up period, age, or the volume of tumour between the patients with and without tumour growth. However, a multivariate analysis revealed that the likelihood of tumour growth independently and significantly increased according to a decrease in the age of the patients (Odds ratio 0.18 for one-standard-deviation change (1SD) 12.6 years, p=0.042) and according to an increase in the volume of the tumour (Odds ratio 3.64 for 1SD 4.46 cu cm, p=0.042).  The majority of patients with incidental meningioma can be apparently observed without any surgical intervention, because their annual growth rates are generally less than 1 cu cm/year. However, clinical and radiological observations would be advisable for these patients (especially young patients and patients with a large tumour), in view of the presence of rapidly growing tumours in some of the patients.

    Notes: Argon electron cyclotron resonance plasma characteristics discharged by 7.0, 8.0, and 9.4 GHz microwaves are measured at 0.013 and 0.080 Pa in a cylindrical chamber. The plasma densities and electron temperatures were found to be almost independent of the microwave frequency at 0.013 Pa, whereas clear differences were seen at 0.080 Pa. At 0.080 Pa, the plasma densities were observed to increase with the increase in the discharge frequency. Electron temperatures at 0.080 Pa also appeared to become higher with the increase in discharge frequency. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A compact electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source (compact ECRIS) for the mass spectrometer was tested. A feature of the compact ECRIS is its size, i.e., inner diameter: 22.5 mm (1 in. tube), length: 56 mm. ECR plasmas in this ion source using argon gas were discharged by high-frequency microwaves, 7–10 GHz.     Notes: The spectrum of micronodular thymic epithelial tumours with lymphoid B-cell hyperplasia Aims: A rare type of thymoma, micronodular thymoma with lymphoid B-cell hyperplasia, was recently reported by Suster and Moran. Thymic epithelial tumours with a similar pattern but with varied cytological features of the tumour cells are analysed. Methods and results: A total of 11 cases of thymic epithelial tumours characterized by micronodular proliferation of tumour cells separated by abundant lymphoid stroma with prominent germinal centres were reviewed clinicopathologically and examined immunohistochemically. The presence of Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) genome was also examined by in-situ hybridization. Based on the morphology of tumour epithelial cells, cases were subdivided into four groups: group 1 (two cases) having spindle epithelial cells; group 2 (two cases) showing an admixture of spindle and polygonal epithelial cells; group 3 (five cases) having polygonal epithelial cells, with mild to moderate cytological atypia in four cases, and group 4 (two cases) representing lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma. The degree of cytological atypia and the number of tumour cells positive for MIB-1 and p53 gradually increased towards group 4. The abundant lymphoid stroma in all cases contained many CD20-positive B-cells and CD3 and CD45RO-positive T-cells. CD99-positive immature T-cells were present in all cases of groups 1 and 2 and in most cases of group 3, but not in both cases of group 4 tumours. IgG, IgM and IgD-positive plasma cells and lymphocytes were also present in all cases, more prominent in those of groups 3 and 4. The EBV genome was detected in only a few lymphocytes in five cases. Conclusions: The tumours in this series belong to a distinct category of thymic epithelial tumours and each of the above groups may constitute a spectrum in the continuum of cytological atypia. The aetiological relationship of EBV with these tumours could not be proved. The lymphoid B-cell hyperplasia may result from a host immune response and may suggest a favourable clinical course of this type of tumour.

    Notes: Background : Trefoil factor family peptides are expressed in gastrointestinal epithelial cells and play a critical role in maintaining mucosal integrity. Although non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are important causative agents of gastric mucosal lesions, few data are available about the effect of NSAIDs on trefoil family peptides in gastric mucosa.Aim : To examine whether indometacin, a widely used NSAID, affects trefoil factor family expression in gastric epithelial cells.Methods : MKN45, a cell line derived from human gastric cancer, was used. TFF1, TFF2, and TFF3 mRNA expression was assessed by real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). TFF2 gene transcription was also examined by luciferase reporter gene assay.Results : Relative expression level of TFF1, TFF2, TFF3 mRNA was 616: 12: 1 in unstimulated MKN45 cells. Although indometacin (1–250 µmol/L) had no significant effect on the expression of TFF1 and TFF3 mRNA, it up-regulated TFF2 mRNA expression in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Luciferase reporter gene assay confirmed the up-regulation of TFF2 gene transcription by indometacin. Indometacin-induced up-regulation of TFF2 expression was not antagonized by externally applied prostaglandin E2.Conclusion : These results suggest that indometacin up-regulates gastric epithelial cell TFF2 expression through a COX-independent mechanism. Since TFF peptides play an important role in gastric mucosal protection, indometacin-induced TFF2 may reduce the degree of gastric mucosal damage induced by indometacin.

    Notes: Flaking type failure in rolling-contact processes is usually attributed to fatigue-induced subsurface shearing stress caused by the contact loading. Assuming such crack growth is due to mode II loading and that mode I growth is suppressed due to the compressive stress field arising from the contact stress, we developed a new testing apparatus for mode II fatigue crack growth. Although the apparatus is, as a former apparatus was, based on the principle that the static KI mode and the compressive stress parallel to the pre-crack are superimposed on the mode II loading system, we employ direct loading in the new apparatus. Instead of the simple four-point-shear-loading system used in the former apparatus, a new device for the application of a compressive stress parallel to the pre-crack has been developed. Due to these alterations, mode II cyclic loading tests for hard steels have become possible for arbitrary stress ratios, including fully reversed loading (R=−1); which is the case of rolling-contact fatigue. The test results obtained using the newly developed apparatus on specimens made from bearing steel SUJ2 and also a 0.75% carbon steel, are shown.

    Notes: A synchrotron radiation X-ray powder diffractometer for samples of very small amount has been developed to collect high-quality diffraction patterns under extreme conditions, i.e. at low temperature and/or high pressure. A new cylindrical imaging plate (CIP) is used as a detector, in addition to a conventional flat-type imaging plate (FIP). By using the CIP system, the diffraction data in a diffraction angle range −44 ≤ 2θ ≤ 122° are collected with a dynamic range of about 106. The alignment of the diffractometer, measurement and analysis are automatically operated by a workstation. A performance test shows that the CIP system has spatial resolution of about 0.07° with a dynamic range of 106. The diffraction pattern of a standard sample of Si measured by the CIP system has high quality; the refinement of the structure reaches Rw = 3.68% even in the case of a small amount of sample (about 2 µg) and a short exposure time (60 s). Examples of experiments at low temperatures under ambient and high pressures are also presented.
