    Notes: Abstract Diagnostic and clinical features of the frozen shoulder syndrome and the Sudeck syndrome are similar in many aspects. Radioisotope bone scan shows an increased uptake in affected areas in both diseases, while native radiographs show a progressive demineralisation. Measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) by quantitative digital radiography objectified these local decalcification processes in an early stage of the frozen shoulder syndrome; 10 of 12 patients with primary frozen shoulder had BMD decreases greater 21% in the humeral head of the affected shoulder compared to the non-affected side. In the immobilised control group with degenerative changes of the rotator cuff, calcifying tendinitis and shoulder instability (n = 12) and in the group of healthy probands (n = 20), the difference between the affected and non-affected side (left and right humerus of the healthy probands) was only more than 21% in one case each. There are several references in the literature that assume frozen shoulder to be an algoneurodystrophic process; our observations support this hypothesis, possibly leading to earlier diagnoses and extended therapeutic management.

    Notes: The afterglow is known to produce pulses of highly charged ions suited for injection to accelerator facilities. We tested a new technique of magnetic pulsed extraction (PUMAEX) in our plateau-ECR ion source PECRIS III. This source has a large resonance volume due to a homogeneous magnetic field in its center. Compared to the afterglow of PECRIS III we reached higher ion currents. The length of the PUMAEX pulses depends on the electric current pulse in the PUMAEX coil, we used pulse lengths of 0.25–1 ms. The PUMAEX coil is a small coil which is placed around the extraction hole in the plasma electrode. The absolute value of the static magnetic field near the extraction hole can be reduced below the value in the center of the source by a current pulse in the PUMAEX coil. Thus the magnetic confinement of the ECR plasma is opened specifically in the direction of the extraction hole. The plasma therefore escapes from the source more directed to the extraction hole than in the afterglow. Since the coil is very near to the location where the magnetic field is changed, it was possible to use a small coil, which could be placed in the plasma electrode of PECRIS III without major modifications. Currently we are building a new multifrequency plateau ECRIS. Using eight frequencies between 17 and 18 GHz we intend to improve the electron heating in the large resonance volume. The highest frequency will be set to the resonance frequency of cold electrons at the center of the source. The lower frequencies will match the resonance frequencies of more energetic electrons as those electrons have a greater relativistic mass. In the near future we will test the PUMAEX technique with this new source. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The application of a non-overlapping domain decomposition method to the solution of a stabilized finite element method for elliptic boundary value problems is considered. We derive an a-posteriori error estimate which bounds the error on the subdomains by the interface error of the subdomain solutions. As a by-product, some foundation is given to the design of the interface transmission condition. Numerical results support the theoretical results. Furthermore, we adapt a recent result on a-posteriori estimates for singular perturbation problems in order to obtain an a-posteriori estimate for the discrete subdomain solutions.

    Notes: Abstract From 1985 to 1995, 417 patients with dislocated medial femoral neck fractures (Garden III–IV) were treated with hemiarthroplasty using a Biolox ceramic head. The average patient age at the time of operation was 81.5 years. A total of 140 survivors was available for follow-up examination with a mean prosthesis longevity of 55.8 months. The Harris hip score recorded a mean of 70.6 points. At the time of follow up, 5 patients had severe hip pain, and in 8 the roentgenographic examination revealed protrusio acetabuli. Five of these 8 patients underwent revision surgery for replacement of the cup, leaving the stem in situ.

    Notes: Abstract Single-portal endoscopic carpal tunnel release (Agee technique) was carried out in 148 patients. Of these, 100 were examined clinically and electrophysiologically 1 day before surgery and 1 and 3 months thereafter. Ten patients experienced transient ulnar neuropraxia and two patients complained postoperatively of intense pain in the middle and ring fingers. Three patients suffered residual symptoms. In one of these an incomplete release of the distal portion of the retinaculum flexorum was suspected and later confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. Another patient had applied for pension due to problems associated with a vertebral fracture in addition to his carpal tunnel symptoms. A third patient with residual symptoms was rheumatic, and upon reexamination 6 months later he was virtually symptom free. Five of the 148 operations were converted to an open procedure due to poor visualization. A review of literature on carpal tunnel release (biportal Chow technique and uniportal Agee technique) uncovered 31intra- and postoperative complications, including 14 affecting nerve structures, 2 tendon structures, 2 bony structures, and 9 the surrounding tissues. We discuss the most common complications, considering in particular the anatomical characteristics in the carpal tunnel region.

    Notes: Abstract We report here on an ongoing experimental program initiated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN for the measurement of magnetic moments of short-lived radionuclides, with the emphasis on magnetic moments of mirror nuclei in far-from-stability regions. The nuclei are polarized by the tilted foil technique and the resulting 0–180○ βasymmetry is monitored as a function of rf frequency applied in an NMR setup. In order to achieve sufficiently high energy for transmission through the foils, the experimental setup is mounted on a high voltage platform. The first experiment in this program was the measurement of the βasymmetry and the NMR resonance for the ground state of 23Mg (I=3/2, T1/2=11.3 s), yielding μ=−0.533(6) nm. Improvements to the experimental setup are presently being designed, to be used in conjunction with the new developments at ISOLDE for obtaining high charge-state ions from the EBIS (REX-ISOLDE) ion source. This will help pave the way for measurements of magnetic moments of T=3/2 nuclei in the s–d shell and of T=1/2 f-shell nuclei. The study of relaxation times and other solid-state phenomena in semiconductors and other materials of interest using this technique is also contemplated.
