Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. To investigate whether proinsulin C peptide influences sympathetic nerve activity directly or indirectly through parasympathetic nerve activity. Methods. The proliferative response of splenic lymphocytes to Concanavalin A (ConA response) which is known to be suppressed by subjection of rats to footshock or intracerebroventricular injection of corticotropin-releasing factor through sympathetic nerve activation was measured. Effect of C peptide alone or before subjection to footshock or injection of corticotropin-releasing factor was examined. Results. Intraperitoneal injection of C peptide was without effect on the basal ConA response, while subjection to footshock or injection of corticotropin-releasing factor lowered it. In contrast, prior injection of C peptide obviated the footshock and corticotropin-releasing factor-induced suppression of the response. When given intracerebroventricularly, C peptide was also effective at much smaller doses. Prior injection of atropine cancelled the C-peptide effects. Conclusion/interpretation. Our results indicate that C peptide counteracts the sympathetic nerve-mediated suppression of splenic lymphocyte proliferation in an atropine-sensitive manner. Thus, C peptide probably activates the parasympathetic nervous system through the afferent mechanism, that in turn antagonizes the sympathetic nerve-mediated suppression of splenic lymphocyte functions. Notes: : Soft-electron is a term referring to electrons with energies of 300 kV or lower. Enrei and Vinton soybeans were irradiated with gamma–rays and soft–electrons at 60 keV to compare the effectiveness of the treatments for decontamination purpose. The doses of 20 kGy of gamma-rays and 26 kGy of soft-electrons were effective to decontaminate the soybeans. The gamma radiation changed some properties of the grains: inhibited the germination capacity, increased the lipid oxidation and decreased the lipoxygenase activity, radical scavenging activity and carotenoid content. Soft-electron treatment caused less or none change in soybean quality, being considered a more appropriate procedure for decontamination.

Notes: The body wall collagen of an edible sea cucumber, Stichopus japonicus, was studied with respect to its chemical composition and subunit structure. About 70% of the total body wall protein was accounted for by highly insoluble collagen fibers. The disaggregation with β-mercaptoethanol, 0.1 M NaOH treatment, and limited pepsin digestion of these collagen fibers resulted in complete solubilization. The solubilized collagen was isolated and characterized; it had 2 distinct subunits, αl and α2, which formed (α1)2α2 heterotrimers and was rich in glutamic acid when compared with other fibrillar collagens. The unique textural properties of cooked sea cucumber seem to be due to thermal denaturation of the insoluble collagen fibers.

Notes: Background Japanese cedar pollens (JCPs) spread over most areas of Japan from February to April and cause pollenosis. While IgE synthesis against JCPs starts after age 1, it remains to be clarified when JCP-specific T helper cells acquire the ability to produce IL-4, a cytokine that induces IgE synthesis. Objective This study aimed to clarify when the sensitization of T cells to JCPs develops.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 153 children with atopic dermatitis (AD) aged 0–15 years were stimulated with a standardized JCP allergen. As parameters of T cell responsiveness, lymphocyte proliferation and the production of IL-4 and IFN-γ were measured. Results T cell responses against JCPs were negative before March in infants with AD who had never been exposed to JCPs or who were exposed for less than a month (nine, seven and nine subjects for lymphocyte proliferation, cytokine production and IgE synthesis, respectively). Lymphocyte proliferation distinctly increased in 67.6% (23/34) of infants with AD examined between March and June. JCP-specific IL-4 production was observed in 56.0% (14/25) of infants with AD examined between March and June. Correspondingly, a slight increase in the level of serum JCP-specific IgE antibody was seen in 17.2% (five of 29) of infants with AD examined between April and June. Conclusion These results demonstrate that the sensitization of T cells to JCPs is effectively completed within a few months after the first exposure to JCPs.

Notes: summary  Five types of removable partial dentures (two attachment dentures, two telescopic dentures and one clasp denture) were designed. The two attachment dentures were retained by the rigid-precision attachments with or without a stabilizing arm, and the two telescope dentures were retained with cone telescope crowns with or without cross-arch stabilization. The stresses acting on abutment teeth and denture bases and the movements of denture bases were investigated, and the influences of denture design were clarified. The stress acting on a terminal abutment tooth retained by a rigid-precision attachment or cone telescopic crown was larger than that acting on a terminal abutment tooth retained by a clasp. The attachment dentures tended to concentrate more stress at the terminal abutment tooth than did the telescopic dentures. The stress of denture base of an attachment denture and a telescopic denture was less than that of a clasp denture. There was no difference between the stresses of attachment and telescopic dentures. The displacement of the denture base tended to be less when the denture was designed with a rigid connection for the retainer and with cross-arch stabilization.

Notes: The design of removable partial dentures (RPDs) is an important factor for good prognostications. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effectiveness of denture designs and to clarify the component that had high rates of failure and complications. A total of 91 RPDs, worn by 65 patients for 2–10 years, were assessed. Removable partial dentures were classified into four groups: telescopic dentures (TDs), ordinary clasp dentures (ODs), modified clasp dentures (MDs) and combination dentures (CDs). The failure rates of abutment teeth were the highest and those of retainers were the second highest. The failure rates of connectors were generally low, but they increased suddenly after 6 years. Complication and failure rates of denture bases and artificial teeth were generally low. Complication and failure rates of TDs were high at abutment teeth and low level at retainers. Complication and failure rates of ODs were high at retainers.

Notes: Rabeprazole is a new, potent, proton pump inhibitor. The metabolism of rabeprazole is less dependent on CYP2C19 genetic polymorphism.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:A total of 102 Helicobacter pylori-positive patients with gastric ulcer were randomly allocated to three groups: rabeprazole 10 mg (RAC10), rabeprazole 20 mg (RAC20) or rabeprazole 40 mg (RAC40) plus amoxicillin 750 mg and clarithromycin 200 mg twice daily for 7 days. CYP2C19 genotype was determined by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:All-patients-treated-based eradication rates in patients treated with RAC10, RAC20 and RAC40 were 83%, 77% and 90%, respectively, and per protocol-based eradication rates were 83%, 80% and 90%, respectively. The eradication rates in the three groups were not significantly different. There was also no significant difference between the all-patients-treated-based eradication rate in CYP2C19 extensive metabolizers and that in poor metabolizers (86% vs. 77%). Adverse events were 12% in extensive metabolizers and 23% in poor metabolizers, and the difference in these incidence rates was also not statistically significant.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:Triple therapy with 10 mg of rabeprazole combined with amoxicillin/clarithromycin is effective for Japanese patients with H. pylori infection, and the H. pylori eradication rate is not affected by CYP2C19 genetic polymorphism.

Notes: The tissue distribution of mouse polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR) has been demonstrated. By Northern blot hybridization, pIgR mRNA expression was detected in liver, intestine, stomach, lung and kidney. A weak expression was also detected in thymus by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. The pIgR expression in kidney was further studied and confirmed that pIgR protein was actively synthesized in the epithelial cells of distal urinary tubule and of Henle's loop. Immunoelectron microscopical analysis showed the accumulation of pIgR-containing vesicles in the apical portion of distal urinary tubule epithelial cells.
