    Notes: Compressive stress-strain characteristics of carbon/epoxy laminated composites in the through-thickness direction at strain rates of over 1000/s were evaluated using the standard split Hopkinson pressure bar. Three carbon/epoxy laminated composites (i.e., unidirectional, cross-ply and woven) with almost the same thickness were tested at room temperature. Small solid cylindrical specimens were machined such that the direction of the compression loading was perpendicular to the fiber direction of the laminates. The effects of strain rate and reinforcement geometry on the secant modulus at 1% strain, ultimate compressive strength and strain, and total strain energy to failure were examined in detail

    Notes: Summary  Endothelium plays a role in the regulation of vascular tone. Endothelin is a family of potent vasoconstrictive peptides, and endothelin-1 (ET-1) produced in the endothelium induces a tonic contraction via specific receptor ETa. ET-1 has been postulated as an important factor in the development of vasospasm after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). We have previously shown that protein kinase C (PKC) of the cerebral artery plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of vasospasm. The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between ET-1 and PKC in the development and maintenance of vasospasm.  Using a “two-haemorrhage” canine model, chronological changes of angiographic progression of vasospasm, PKC activation, and ET-1 level of the basilar artery were assessed. In an isometric tension study with a control artery, the effects of ETa- and ETa/ETb-antagonists on the tonic contraction induced by ET-1 were examined. The effects of ET-1, ET-1 and an ETa-antagonist, and ET-1 and an ETa/ETb-antagonist on PKC activation were also evaluated.  ET-1 level temporarily increased, then decreased to the control level in a later stage of vasospasm. ET-1 induced a tonic contraction and enhancement of PKC activation, but both were inhibited either by an ETa- or an ETa/ETb-antagonist.  These results indicate that ET-1 initiates the development of vasospasm through PKC activation, but does not contribute to prolonged vasospasm.

    Notes: Since 1994 at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences HIMAC, the NIRS Penning ionized-gauge ion source (PIGIS) has so far been used for radiotherapy with carbon beams and for basic research with several ion species. The source can produce beams from H2 to Fe with a charge-to-mass ratio of between 1/7 and 1/2. It is a hot-cathode type with a filament, of which the lifetime is on the order of a week and the cathode on the order of 1 month, under a low-duty pulsed operation (≤0.5%) synchronized to the ring operation. This PIGIS can produce highly charged ions: for example, 1 e mA of Ar7+ or 500 eμ A of Si5+ ions (by sputtering) under the typical arc power of 5 kW in peak. This article describes the present status of the NIRS-PIGIS. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes capable of degrading collagens and other extracellular matrix components, have been implicated in gastric ulcer formation. However, the effect on MMP expression of Helicobacter pylori, also implicated in these lesions, has not been studied to our knowledge. Aim: To seek links between H. pylori and MMP expression likely to affect gastric ulcer formation. After fibroblasts from human gastric wall were cocultured with H. pylori, concentrations of MMP-1 and -2 in the medium were determined by enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assays. Results: Whereas MMP-1 was not detected in media from fibroblasts or H. pylori culture alone, MMP-1 was detected in cocultures (P 〈 0.01). Similar amounts of MMP-2 were detected in medium from fibroblasts cultured alone and with H. pylori. No MMP-2 production by H. pylori cultured alone was detected. Conclusions: MMP-1 appears to be important in gastric ulcer pathogenesis, and MMP-1 induction by H. pylori may impede gastric ulcer healing.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of TiO2 content on the oxidation of sintered bodies from the conventional Si3N4-Y2O3-Al2O3-AlN system was investigated. Sintered specimens composed of Si3N4, Y2O3, Al2O3, and AlN, with a ratio of 100 : 5 : 3 : 3 wt% and containing TiO2 in the range of 0 to 5 wt% to Si3N4, were fabricated at 1775 °C for 4 h at 0.5 MPa of N2. Oxidation at 1200 to 1400 °C for a maximum of 100 h was performed in atmospheres of dry and wet air flows. The relation between weight gain and oxidation time was confirmed to obey the parabolic law. The activation energies decreased with TiO2 content. In the phases present in the specimens oxidized at 1300 °C for 100 h in dry air, Y3Al5O12 and TiN, which had existed before oxidation, disappeared. Alpha-cristobalite and Y2O3·2TiO2 (Y2T) appeared in their place and increased with increasing TiO2 content. In those oxidized at 1400 °C, α -cristobalite was dominant and very small amounts of Y2O3·2SiO2 and Y2T were contained. There was a tendency for more α -cristobalite to form in oxidation in wet air than in dry air. Therefore, moisture was confirmed to affect the crystallization of SiO2 formed during oxidation. Judging from the lower activation energy, the crystallization, and the pores formation, we concluded that the addition of TiO2 decreases oxidation resistance.
