Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. Obesity, glucose intolerance, dyslipidaemia and hypertension are a cluster of disorders (syndrome X) affecting many people. It has been hypothesised that these abnormalities are caused by insulin resistance, but definitive proof is lacking. We have developed transgenic rats in which the rate-limiting gluconeogenic enzyme, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, is non-insulin responsive. The aim of our study was to investigate whether syndrome X develops in these animals and if a high-fat diet interacts with this genetic defect. Methods. Chow-fed transgenic and control rats aged 1, 3, 6 and 17 months and a subgroup of transgenic and control rats fed chow plus cafeteria foods for 6 months were examined for features of syndrome X. Results. At 3 months, transgenic rats had fasting and postprandial hyperinsulinaemia, mild obesity (in abdominal and, to a lesser extent, peripheral regions) and fasting hypercholesterolaemia. Hypertriglyceridaemia was evident after 6 months while hyperglycaemia was apparent at 17 months. Hypertension had not developed by 17 months. The effect of a high-fat diet on insulin, glucose, body weight and body fat was more dramatic than the effect of the transgene alone while the effect of a high-fat diet on cholesterol and triglyceride was similar to the transgene. This illustrates that a high-fat diet is a potent catalyst for many abnormalities associated with syndrome X. There was no evidence of an additive effect of the high-fat diet plus transgene. Conclusion/interpretation. Therefore rats genetically-engineered with a non-insulin responsive gluconeogenic enzyme develop several aspects of syndrome X, supporting the hypothesis that insulin resistance initiates this cluster of disorders. Notes: Abstract. Consider the selection problem of determining the k th smallest element of a set of n elements. Under the CGM (coarse-grained multicomputer) model with p processors and O(n/p) local memory, we present a deterministic parallel algorithm for the selection problem that requires O( log p) communication rounds. Besides requiring a low number of communication rounds, the algorithm also attempts to minimize the total amount of data transmitted in each round (only O(p) except in the last round). In addition to showing theoretical complexities, we present very promising experimental results obtained on a parallel machine that show almost linear speedup, indicating the efficiency and scalability of the proposed algorithm.

Notes: Abstract. Background: Diffuse peritoneal tumor infiltration is well recognized on computed tomography (CT) and is usually associated with carcinomatosis. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the CT findings of peritoneal spread from primary gastrointestinal lymphomas. Methods: Abdominal CT scans in eight patients with peritoneal lymphomatosis were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were 12–75 years old (mean = 48 years); with six patients were male and two were female. Pathologic evidence of primary lymphoma was available by colonoscopic biopsy of the terminal ileum in seven cases and by gastroscopic biopsy of the stomach in one case. All patients had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. We analyzed CT findings in view of presence or loculation of ascites, abnormal patterns of mesentery and omentum, presence of peritoneal enhancement, presence of low attenuation and location of lymph nodes, and primary gastrointestinal lymphoma. Results: Although ascites was present in all patients, there was no loculation. The involvement of mesentery was present in seven patients, and the stellate pattern was the common type (4/7). The involvement of omentum was present in seven patients, and the common type was omental cake (3/7). Peritoneal enhancement was present in six patients. Enlarged lymph nodes were present in six patients, mainly at the retroperitoneum and mesentery, and showed centrally low attenuation in half the patients. Conclusion: Patterns of tumor involvement of mesentery, omentum, and peritoneum seen in peritoneal lymphomatosis are indistinguishable from those seen in peritoneal carcinomatosis or tuberculous peritonitis. However, ascites without any loculation or septation and diffuse distribution of enlarged lymph nodes were helpful signs of peritoneal lymphomatosis.

Notes: Epitaxial growth of noncrystalline diamond thin film on Si(001) surface has been observed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The epitaxial lattice relationship at diamond/Si interface has been described based on a cube-cube orientation with a≈7° tilt plus a rotation of the diamond lattice from the substrate lattice. The observed epitaxial behavior can be explained by the 3:2 lattice coincidence and the introduction of interfacial misfit dislocations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have studied the static I–V characteristics and cavity modes in stacked double Nb/AlOx/Nb Josephson junctions. In junction stacks consisting of two junctions with identical critical currents Ic, the Ic vs H characteristics have been observed to deviate from the usual Fraunhofer pattern in the small junction limit; the data are consistent with a model involving a structural phase transformation to a triangular vortex lattice with increasing H. In a finite voltage state interlayer coupling leads to splitting of the Swihart mode, which manifests itself as Fiske steps with different voltage spacings. The results provide clear evidence that the two junctions in the stack do phase lock. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background In most epidemiological survey studies, only subjective symptoms and past medical history of asthma have been used as diagnostic criteria. Even though a questionnaire survey can be performed in a large population study at low cost, limitations such as lack of objectivity and poor predictability in non-specific bronchial hyperresponsiveness cannot be avoided. Objectives The purpose of this study was to elucidate the prevalence of current asthma based on questionnaires and methacholine bronchial provocation test, and the prevalence of atopy in Korea. Methods We performed modified ATS respiratory questionnaires and allergen skin-prick test with 10 common inhalant allergens among 3219 subjects aged 7–19 years in Seoul and a rural part of a small city, Chungju in Korea. Methacholine bronchial provocation tests were also performed among those who had asthma symptoms according to the questionnaire. The criteria of asthma was presence of both asthma symptoms and non-specific bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Atopy was defined as when an allergen induced weal size is same or larger than that caused by histamine. Results The prevalence of asthma based on questionnaires and methacholine bronchial provocation tests was 4.6%, while the prevalence of wheeze was 8.2% and 19.3% of total population complained of one or more respiratory symptoms related to asthma on the questionnaires. There was no significant difference according to age, sex and living area. The mean prevalence of atopy was 35.0% and the most common allergens were Dermatophagoides farinae (30.9%), Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (27.5%), cat fur (20.4%) and cockroach (11.8%). The atopy prevalence in Chungju area was higher than that in Seoul and males showed a higher prevalence than females. The asthma prevalence was higher among atopies (6.8%) than among non-atopies (2.7%). None of questionnaire items were enough to predict the presence of bronchial hyperresponsiveness in terms of sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value. Conclusion The prevalence rate of current asthma in Korea was 4.6% and the prevalence rate of atopy in Korea was 35.0%. Questionnaire-based surveys are not enough to predict the actual prevalence of asthma.

Notes: A sputtering deposition system has been developed to grow high-quality superconductor/insulator multilayers specifically for use in fabricating vertically stacked Josephson junctions. A unique feature of the design is the computer control of all parameters involved in the repetitive deposition of multilayers. The computer is interfaced with stepper motors that position the substrate, and shutter wheels. Additional computer controlled stepper motors allow in situ changing of up to five contact masks. The computer is also interfaced to a gas flowmeter that controls the partial pressure of the inert and reactive sputtering gases. High-quality, reproducible multilayer films have been produced and are described. Stacked Josephson junctions have been patterned with the multilayer films and some of their electrical characteristics are presented. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
