Notes: Beam position monitors (BPMs) for the SPring-8 synchrotron have already been designed and manufactured. Each BPM pickup has four button-type electrodes, and the output signals from the electrodes are switched by fast PIN-diode and are measured by signal detection systems. Eighty BPMs and four detection systems are placed around the synchrotron. Calibration of beam position of the 80 BPMs was finished successfully. In this paper, we present the structure of the BPM pickup, the electronics of the signal detection system, and the calibration system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: For Tb-Fe-Co(MO)/Al bilayered films, dependence of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy constant Ku⊥ on MO layer thickness tMO of 3–300 nm and Al layer thickness tAl of 5 and 100 nm has been investigated. For either tAl, easy magnetization direction was normal to film plane at tMO above 4 nm. Ku⊥ of films with tAl of 5 nm increased drastically with increasing tMO for tMO〈10 nm and then assumed a constant value of 4×106 erg/cm3 which is two times larger than that with tAl of 100 nm. This difference in Ku⊥ between them may be attributed to stress induced anisotropy. Estimation of rotational hysteresis loss Wr and its integral R suggests that the mechanism of magnetization reversal may be attributed to incoherent curling mode. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This work demonstrates that the technique of guiding atoms through hollow optical fiber escorted by evanescent light is useful as a novel scheme of optical atom deposition. To show the feasibility of fabricating micron-sized structures with nanometric depth on a substrate, we measure the spatial distribution of the guided atom flux with a hot-wire detector. Moreover, precise control of the deposition rate is illustrated with a 1.4-μm-hollow fiber via photoionization spectroscopy. The ratio of the guided atom flux relative to the background transmission is enhanced up to 80-fold with a slightly tilted hollow fiber. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Diamond films were successfully synthesized in both parallel-plate radio frequency (rf: 13.56 MHz) CH4 and CH3OH plasmas with injection of H and OH radicals generated in the remote microwave (2.45 GHz) H2/H2O plasma. Effects of H, OH, and CH3 radicals on the diamond film formation in the rf plasma reactor were investigated by the formation of diamond films employing radical injection technique and the measurement of density in the plasma. Under the condition of diamond film formation, CH3 density was measured by infrared diode laser absorption spectroscopy (IRLAS). The kinetics of CH3 in rf CH4 and CH3OH plasmas with injection of H and OH radicals were evaluated from the results of optical emission spectroscopy and lifetime of CH3 radicals estimated by IRLAS. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We observed the internal structure of an oil/wax/water/surfactant system using a scanning electron microscope to investigate the relationship between its hardness and state of wax crystal. The molten wax (hydrogenated jojoba oil, ceresin, polyethylene wax, carnauba wax, or microcrystalline wax) was cast in a home-made spiral mold of aluminum foil for preparing the test specimen for SEM observation. In hydrogenated jojoba oil a fine frame-like crystal structure, the so-called ‘card-house structure,’ was observed but not in other waxes. The mixture of hydrogenated jojoba oil and water showed a few small droplets deposited on the roundish wax frame-like structure. On the other hand, waxes other than hydrogenated jojoba oil did not change their internal structure when they were mixed with water. This result suggested that hydrogenated jojoba oil showed uniquely high affinity for water. In the system of oil, water, surfactant, and various kinds of waxes, their crystal structure, hardness, and the shape of dispersed water particles were remarkably changed with the combination of waxes. In the system with ceresin and carnauba wax, the hardness measured by a card-tension meter was high, and the internal crystal structure was fine and amorphous. The water particle in the ceresin and carnauba wax system had a smaller diameter than that in the system containing hydrogenated jojoba oil. The system containing hydrogenated jojoba oil showed a card house-like wax crystal structure without high hardness. It was considered that the wax crystal structure played an important role in providing hardness and in contributing to the water distribution in the oil/wax/water/surfactant system.

Notes: We report on a periodic traveling-wave photodetector (P-TW-PD) fabricated by unicarrier traveling photodiodes (UTC-PDs). It is comprised of three UTC-PDs periodically arranged along a coplanar waveguide transmission line. The photoresponse of the P-TW-UTC-PD is three times that of a single UTC-PD. A 3 dB bandwidth (f3dB) of 115 GHz at 1.55 μm was observed in a P-TW-UTC-PD with a terminal resistor located at the input end. This value of f3dB is almost the same as that observed in a single UTC-PD. In P-TW-UTC-PDs with no terminal resistor, the 3 dB bandwidth degrades to 56 GHz as a result of the reflection of backward-propagating microwaves at the input end. We conclude that our P-TW-UTC-PD provides velocity matching between electrical and optical waves. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) with concomitant simple bone cysts is not common. We report a case of FCOD involving three quadrants of the jaws and associated with two large cystic lesions of the mandible in a 40-year-old Japanese woman. Microscopic examination revealed unencapsulated fibroblastic proliferation with formation of bone and cementum, showing different developmental stages, and cystic lesions resembling a simple bone cyst.

Notes: In view of recent studies on the mechanisms of the survival of peripheral memory T cells, we tested the biologic role of pectate lyase, a pectin-degrading enzyme, as the cross-reactive antigen required for the recurring survival signals for human T cells specific for Cha o 1, a pollen allergen molecule of the Japanese cypress. We determined a 16-mer epitope peptide for the T-cell clone, and prepared synthetic oligopeptides of homologous regions in putative pectate lyase of other plants. Of these homologous peptides, ZePel (Zinnia elegans), ban 17 (banana), and Amb a 1.1 (short ragweed) induced strong proliferative responses of the Cha o 1-specific T-cell clone in vitro. In addition, suboptimal doses of peptide homologs derived from banana and short ragweed enhanced the survival potency of this T-cell clone without detectable proliferative responses to the peptides. When there was no antigen stimulation, the T-cell clone decreased in viable cell number and lost antigen-specific proliferation activity on day 6 during in vitro incubation. On the other hand, T-cell clones incubated with these survival-inducing peptides maintained proliferative activity to Cha o 1 even on day 9. Serum derived from the donor patient did not contain detectable levels of IgE specific to banana or short ragweed by CAP-RAST. These results show that human T cells specific for pollen allergen seem to use cross-reactive pectate lyase peptides to deliver survival signals even in the absence of pollen allergen, and memory T cells maintained in such a manner might be functioning at the onset of allergic pollinosis, although pollen allergens are seasonal.

Notes: 1. To clarify the pathogenesis of cardiac disorders in SHRSP which showed severe cardiac hypertrophy and myocardial degeneration in the hypertensive stage, restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), and morphological and functional changes of mitochondria were examined.2. Morphologically, the mitochondrial size showed a wider range of distribution in SHRSP both at prehypertensive and hypertensive stage compared to those in age-matched WKY.3. Isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH) activity, but not super-oxide dismutase (SOD) activity, was higher in the young SHRSP, whereas both enzyme activities were lower in the mature SHRSP than in the age-matched WKY.4. RFLP analysis by electrophoresis revealed that the loss of two restriction sites for Rsa I in the myocardial mtDNA from the SHRSP, but not in that from the WKY.5. These findings suggest that the structural changes of mtDNA could be related, at least partly, to morphological and functional changes of mitochondria in the SHRSP myocardium.
