    Notes: : Since 1989, the government of Pierce County, Washington, has prepared four watershed action plans. The watersheds cover almost 800,000 acres and include about 600,000 residents and diverse land uses, from the city of Tacoma to Mount Rainier National Park. The primary purpose of these plans was to address water quality impacts from nonpoint sources of pollution and to protect beneficial uses of water. Pierce County has experienced problems such as shellfish bed closures and the Federal Clean Water Act Section 303(d) listing of local water bodies as a result of declining water quality. Pierce County achieved improvements by engaging diverse groups of stakeholders in generating solutions to nonpoint sources of water pollution through our watershed planning process. Using participatory methods borrowed from private industry, Pierce County was able to reach consensus, build trust, maximize participation, facilitate learning, encourage creativity, develop partnerships, shorten time frames for the planning processes, and increase the level of commitment participants had to implementing the plans. As a result, the earliest plans have a high rate of voluntary implementation. This indicates that the process and methodology used to develop watershed plans has a significant, if not critical, impact on their success.

    Notes: The relative sensitivity of radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging for detecting palmar process fractures of the distal phalanx in foals was determined and the imaging findings were compared with histomorphologic evaluations of the palmar processes. Compared to radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging did not improve the sensitivity for detection of palmar process fractures. Statistical agreement for palmar process fracture diagnosis was excellent among the three imaging modalities. Histomorphologic evaluations were more sensitive for diagnosis of palmar process fracture than any of the imaging modalities. Three-dimensional image reconstructions and volume measurements of distal phalanges and palmar process fracture fragments from computed tomography studies provided more complete anatomical information than radiography. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed that the deep digital flexor tendon insertion on the distal phalanx is immediately axial to the site where palmar process fractures occur, and differentiated cartilage, bone, and soft tissue structures of the hoof.

    Notes: Developmental morphology of the forelimb distal phalanges and lateral palmar processes of 9 Thoroughbred foals aged 3–32 weeks was assessed using radiography, microradiography and histology. For inclusion in the study, all distal phalanges had no pathologic radiographic abnormalities.Vascular channels that are characteristically found in the dorsal region of the distal phalanx were not evident radiographically in the palmar process. The proximal and distal angles of the palmar processes were separated by a lucent line continuous with the incisure in foals only through 12 weeks of age. The distal phalanges were triangular-shaped in foals 3–12 weeks of age, and were oval-shaped in older foals.The palmar aspect of the distal phalanx was the major contributor to growth of the distal phalanx in the sagittal plane, especially between 3 and 12 weeks of age. Growth of the lateral palmar process occurred through the means of endochondral ossification. The body and cortices of the lateral palmar process were composed of coarse cancellous bone. Porosity within the lateral palmar process was greater in regions sampled axial, compared to abaxial, to the parietal sulcus and did not change with age.A fracture was identified microradiographically and/or histologically in 9 of 18 (50%) and 10 of 17 (59%), respectively, of the lateral palmar processes examined. The fracture line was consistently associated with the parietal sulcus on the dorsal cortical surface and was always immediately abaxial to the deep digital flexor tendon attachment. No age-related morphological changes of the lateral palmar processes were identified with microradiography or histological examinations.

    Notes: High resolution absorption spectra of the A 3Π1u–X 1Σ+g system of I2, consisting of some 9552 lines of some 79 bands spanning the vibrational range v′=0–35 and v″=3–17, have been recorded and analyzed. A fit to them which uses the previously determined accurate molecular constants for the X 1Σ+g state yields an accurate new set of molecular constants for the A state, including the Λ doubling constants. The A-state vibrational and inertial rotational constants, as well as mechanically consistent centrifugal distortion constants, are represented by near-dissociation expansions, yielding an accurate representation of the experimental data which also provides a reliable global representation of all observed and unobserved vibration–rotation levels of this state. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Infrared (IR)-absorbance spectroscopy was investigated as a technique for monitoring titanium silicide formation during the reaction of Ti films on (100) Si substrates. Films annealed to various stages of reaction were monitored by x-ray diffraction, film resistivity, and optical reflectance in order to relate the changes in the IR-absorbance spectra to reaction progress. Films at different stages of reaction showed distinctly different extinction coefficients α, and absorbance versus wave-number curves. IR absorbance was determined to be a useful indicator of reaction progress, especially in those cases where samples at different stages of the silicidation reaction have the same resistance but different absorbance behaviors. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have investigated the impact of neuromuscular activity on the expression of neurotrophins in the lumbar spinal cord region and innervating skeletal muscle of adult rats. Rats were exercised on a treadmill for 1 day or 5 consecutive days and euthanized at 0, 2 or 6 h after the last bout of exercise. By Day 1, there was no clear evidence of an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA in the spinal cord or the soleus muscle. By Day 5, there was a significant increase in BDNF mRNA in the spinal cord at 2 h post-training, and the soleus muscle showed a robust increase between 0 and 6 h post-training. Immunoassays showed significant increases in BDNF protein in the soleus muscle by training Day 5. Immunohistochemical analyses showed elevated BDNF levels in motoneuron cell bodies and axons in the ventral horn. Neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) mRNA was measured to determine whether selected neurotrophins respond with a selective pattern of induction to neuromuscular activity. In the spinal cord, there was a progressive post-training decrease in NT-3 mRNA following a single bout of training, while there was a significant increase in NT-3 mRNA at 2 h post-training by Day 5. The soleus muscle showed a progressive increase in NT-3 mRNA by Days 1 and 5 following training. These results show that neuromuscular activity has specific effects on the BDNF and NT-3 systems, and that repetitive exercise affects the magnitude and stability of these responses.

    Notes: The development of integrated weed management strategies requires knowledge of mechanisms that influence compositional changes in weed flora. A 9-year study was initiated in 1988 at Delhi, Canada, on a loamy sand soil to evaluate the effect of tillage systems [conventional (CT) and no-till (NT)] and cover crops (only in NT) on weed density, species composition and associations, and crop yield in a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)/bean/winter wheat rotation. Three bean types: soyabean (Glycine max L. Merr.), white bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and kidney bean (P. vulgaris L.) were included. The NT system included variations: rye (Secale cereale L.) or maize (Zea mays L.) cover crop, volunteer wheat disked after harvest and wheat stubble. Data were collected in 1994, 1995 and 1996. Tillage systems, cover crops and crop type had differential effects on weed densities, species composition and associations. Weed densities were not affected by tillage or cover crops in wheat but, in the beans, densities were greater in the CT than in the NT systems. Various associations of weed species with tillage system, cover crop and crop type were observed. Crop yields were not affected by tillage type or cover crop, except that soyabean yields were highest in plots with cover crops.

    Notes: We describe a simple quasi-in situ resistivity technique and its application to the study of C49 to C54 TiSi2 conversion in narrow (0.1-1.0 μm) lines. This technique allowed comparison of both aggregate conversion versus time at temperature behavior and individual-line conversion versus time behavior for silicide lines of different linewidths. As linewidth decreased, the aggregate conversion versus time at temperature behavior slowed, and the conversion behaviors of individual lines having the same linewidth became more variable. Both of these observations are consistent with a nucleation-site-density controlled reaction under conditions of low nucleation site density. Correlations were also found between individual line behaviors and resistance to agglomeration; resistance to agglomeration (for 0.35–1.0 μm lines already in the C54 phase) was highest for lines which had "prompt'' conversion behaviors (as measured by the sheet resistance drop during the first minute of the conversion anneal). Additional data concerning the sensitivity of the initial sheet resistances to formation anneal conditions and linewidth is also briefly discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A theoretical and numerical model is formulated to describe the instability and the long-time evolution of both gravity-driven and surface-shear-stress-driven thin coating films. A single evolution equation, of higher-order diffusive type, models the flow for either problem. It is derived using the lubrication approximation. For partially wetting systems, the effect of finite contact angle is incorporated in the equation using a particular disjoining pressure model. The base state, in each case, is a two-dimensional steadily propagating capillary front. Slight perturbations of the base state, applied along the front, initiate the fingering instability. Early-time results accurately reproduce the wavelengths of fastest growth and the corresponding eigenmodes as reported in published linear stability analyses. As time proceeds, depending on parameter values, various fingering patterns arise. For conditions of perfect wetting with the substrate downstream of the moving front covered with a thin precursor layer, predicted nonlinear finger evolution agrees well with published experiments. The ultimate pattern, in this case, is a steadily translating pattern of wedge-shaped fingers. Alternatively, for partially wetting systems that exhibit sufficiently large static contact angles, long straight-sided fingers or rivulets are formed. Finally, for larger contact angles, or at relatively low speeds, we predict that the flowing rivulets will become unstable and break up into strings of isolated droplets. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
