Notes: Inherent dynamic properties of the ferromagnetic phase of the standard re-entrant ferromagnet (Fe0.20Ni0.80)75P16B6Al3 have been experimentally investigated by ac-susceptibility measurements. A pronounced aging behavior and a fatal fragility to magnetic field perturbations is found—properties which also characterize a spin glass phase. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer system designed for low field static and dynamic susceptibility measurements is described. Magnetic shields reduce the residual field in the sample space to about 0.04 A/m (0.5 mOe). A highly stable dc magnetic field is generated by a small superconducting solenoid working in the persistent mode. The temperature control system yields a resolution better than 10 μK in the range of 30–100 K. Combining ac susceptibility and dc magnetic relaxation measurements, the system allows dynamic susceptibility studies in a time window ranging from 3×10−6to 106 s. The sensitivity of the system is 10−12 Am2 (10−9 emu). © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Zero-field-cooled magnetization measurements on a Cu(10 at.% Mn) spin glass are reported. The relaxation of the magnetization is recorded after specific temperature variations of the sample in the spin-glass phase. The data are discussed within the framework of new domain theories of the spin-glass phase. A qualitative agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results is found. Specifically, empirical support for the theoretical concept overlap length is given.

Notes: Ag–Mn nanoparticles were prepared by advanced gas evaporation. Their composition corresponded to Ag0.89Mn0.11, and the particle size distribution was log normal. The particles demonstrated an unambiguous spin glass behavior with the temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility displaying a plateau at ∼25 K. The magnetic domains were limited by the size of the particles. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: New nonequilibrium features of the magnetic susceptibility of spin glasses are reviewed. Experimental observations on the time variation of the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) susceptibilities indicate that the same equilibrium value is obtained after the same characteristic time teq(T). ZFC and ac susceptibility measurements on metallic spin glasses unambiguously reveal the existence of aging of the zero-field spin-glass state. The possibility to probe the aging process from these measurements is outlined. The aging of the zero-field state ends at the characteristic time teq(T) , where a spin-glass state at dynamic equilibrium is retained.

Notes: It is shown for the first time that the superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−x phase can be deposited by chemical vapor deposition using the halide precursors YCl3, BaI2, and CuCl as metal sources and an O2/H2O gas mixture. Sintered calcium stabilized zirconia plates were used as substrates. The superconductor was obtained upon deposition without the need for post-annealing. An ideal (001) texture was always found to prevail.

Notes: The magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of (Fe1−xCox)3P (x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.33) has been studied in the temperature range 5 K–300 K. The compound crystallizes in a tetragonal structure with three non-equivalent metal sites and shows an easy planar behavior with the magnetic moments aligned in the ab plane and the c axis as the hard direction. The MAE of Fe3P was investigated using magnetization measurements on a single crystalline sample. The anisotropy constants were found to be K1(approximate)−851 kJ/m3 and K2(approximate)9 kJ/m3 at 5 K and K1(approximate)−648 kJ/m3 and K2(approximate)11 kJ/m3 at 300 K. The MAE of the cobalt substituted systems was investigated on sintered samples formed into spheres. K1 for these samples was calculated from a fit of the magnetization versus internal field strength using the law of approach to saturation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract: Experiments on the temperature and time dependence of the response function and the field cooled magnetisation of a Cu(Mn) spin glass at temperatures below the zero field spin glass temperature are used to explore the non-equilibrium nature of the underlying spin configuration. The results imply that a certain spin configuration is imprinted on the system as the temperature is decreased at a constant cooling rate. The cooling rate governs the magnitude of the FC magnetisation ( (H,T)). Any intermittent halt at a constant temperature, , imprints an extended spin configuration, a process that is reflected e.g. in a downward relaxation of . On continued cooling at the same rate, the magnitude of (T) remains at a lower level than that of a continuous cooling curve. These results are put into the context of the corresponding behaviour of the response function as observed in measurements of the relaxation of the zero field cooled magnetisation.

Notes: Abstract: Dynamic magnetic properties and ageing phenomena of the re-entrant ferromagnet (Fe0.20Ni0.80)75P16B6Al3 are investigated by time dependent zero field cooled magnetic relaxation, m(t), measurements. The influence of a temperature cycling (perturbation), ,(prior the field application) on the relaxation rate is investigated both in the low temperature re-entrant spin glass “phase” and in the ferromagnetic phase. In the ferromagnetic phase the influence of a positive and a negative temperature cycle (of equal magnitude) on the response is almost the same (symmetric response). The result at lower temperatures, in the RSG “phase” is asymmetric, with a strongly affected response for positive, and hardly no influence on the response for negative temperature cycles. The behaviour at low temperatures is similar to what is observed in ordinary spin glasses.
