    Notizen: A Penning trap system has been set up for storing and investigating cluster ions over time ranges from microseconds up to minutes. This enables studies of cluster reactions with extremely low cross sections and the observation of their time dependence in a new regime. The ions are created externally by laser vaporization, cooled by adiabatic expansion of a supersonic beam, and injected into the Penning trap. Detection of reaction products is achieved by combining the advantages of two complementary approaches, viz. the high resolution of Fourier transform mass spectrometry and the high sensitivity of single-ion counting with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The performance of the apparatus is illustrated by results of recent cluster experiments. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A new detection scheme for Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) studies is proposed and initial experimental results are presented. While in conventional FT-ICR, the difference of the transient signals from two opposite electrodes is recorded and Fourier transformed, it is also possible to use the sum of these signals. In this way resonances are observed at the harmonic of the reduced cyclotron frequency 2 ν+ as well as ν+−ν− and ν++ν−, the later being important for accurate mass measurements. The experiments were performed with a Penning trap in an electromagnet.

    Notizen: Summary A case of juvenile-onset insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in a 30-year-old male patient is reported. He was admitted to the hospital because of severe diabetic neuropathy, predominantly in the lower extremities. Signs of autonomic neuropathy were not evident but the patient had severe orthostatic hypotension. Circulating catecholamine concentrations were normal; however, the blood pressure response to infused norepinephrine was reduced ten-fold compared to a group of normals. An improvement of the blood pressure response to sympathomimetic drugs was accomplished during the simultaneous administration of propranolol, a β-receptor blocking agent. The present data suggest a possible defect of the adrenergic receptor system in response to sympathomimetic drugs while the release of catecholamines and the function of the parasympathetic nervous system appears to be intact. Treatment with β-blocking agents such as propranolol as an adjunct to sympathomimetics seems to be a promising approach which might deserve further consideration in similar cases.

    Notizen: Abstract Resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS) and pulsed-laser induced desorption (PLID) have been combined for ultrasensitive detection and spectroscopy of very small samples of refractive elements. The method has been tested and applied to laser spectroscopy of 5×109 atoms (1.5 pg) of195Au (T 1/2= 183d) implanted at the ISOLDE online mass separator with 60 keV into graphite. A pulsed thermal atomic beam was formed by laser desorption with a 10 ns Nd∶Yag laser pulse. Subsequently the atoms were photoionized in a three-colour, three-step resonant excitation to an autoionizing state. The selectivity was enhanced by a time-of-flight measurement of the photo ions. In resonance, one ion was detected per 105 atoms implanted resulting in a gain in detection efficiency by three orders of magnitude in comparison to the use of a continuous atomic beam. In the course of the experiments several unknown autoionizing states were found, and the lifetime of the 6d 2 D 3/2 state of gold was determined to beτ=10.7(6) ns.

    Notizen: Abstract Resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS) and pulsed-laser induced desorption (PLID) have been combined in order to study the isotope shift (IS) and hyperfine structure (HFS) of184Au (T1/2=53 s) and183Au (T1/2=42 s) in the 6s2S1/2 → 6p2P1/2 (λ=267 nm) transition. The Au isotopes were obtained as daughters in the decay of184,183Hg produced and mass separated at the new ISOLDE-3 facility at CERN. It was found that the strong deformationβ 2}-0.25 setting in at186Au persists down to183Au.

    Notizen: Abstract The changes of the mean-square charge radii have been measured for198Pt-183Pt by means of resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS) at the new on-line isotope separator ISOLDE-3/CERN. As in the case of the neighbouring isotopes of Au and Hg, a strong nuclear deformation of ¦β2¦ −-0.24 is reached at the neutron mid-shell nucleus183Pt, but no indication for a sharp shape transition is observed from the study of the isotope shifts.

    Notizen: Abstract The neutron deficient nuclei98Ag,104Sn withT z =2 and103In,105Sn (T z=5/2) were studied in-beam following the reaction of 250 MeV58Ni+50Cr. Neutron and charged particle (p, α) gatedγγ-coincidence spectra were used to identify these nuclei, which are populated with yields between 0.05% and 2% of the total residue cross section, and to determine their level schemes. In a comprehensive shell model study various approaches for the residual interaction were used to describe these newly and several previously studied neutron deficient nuclei. As a result predictions for the neutron single particle energies for100Sn are obtained and used to discuss the next generation of experiments.

    Notizen: Abstract Excited states in162Hf were investigated up to spinI ≈ 38 using the anti-Comptonspectrometer array HERA with 21 detectors. In addition, some information was obtained on161Hf. The analysis of triple coincidences was crucial for the construction of the level schemes. The results are interpreted within the framework of the cranked shell model and are compared to neighbouring isotopes and isotones, showing Fermi level and deformation effects. The systematic behaviour of the band crossings in the Hf isotopes and theN=90 isotones is discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract Lifetimes of excited states in164Hf were measured using the Doppler-shift recoil-distance method. Gamma-gamma coincidences at eleven target-stopper distances were measured using the twelve Compton-suppressed Ge-detectors of the OSIRIS spectrometer. From the coincidence spectra the intensities of the Doppler-shifted and unshiftedγ-lines were determined. The quadrupole momentsQ tof transitions within the rotational bands derived from the lifetimes are constant within the experimental uncertainties up to the 18+ state. TheQ tvalue for the transition between the ground- and the neutroni 13 2/2 band (s-band) which is strongly reduced compared to the values of the in-band transitions is used to deduce a band interaction energy of 34 keV ≦V≦57 keV.
