    Notizen: By using a particle-in-cell simulation code which includes tunneling ionization, it is found that strong wake fields are excited and amplified due to the modulation of an intense laser pulse induced by an ionizing plasma in the regime where the matching condition between laser pulse length (LLaser) and plasma wavelength (λp), i.e. LLaser≤λp is not satisfied. The modulation is characterized by a gradual steepening of the pulse front where there is a copropagating density gradient which is due to the rapid plasma formation from ionization there. Accordingly, the wake field is convectively amplified to a significant level. This amplification of plasma waves always occurs, more or less, for laser propagation in ionizing plasmas. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The self-similar distribution of electrons is found for a nonuniform underdense plasma that is heated by an intensive laser field. The distribution function is flat-topped for the low-energy electrons. And in the high-energy region, it has a well-pronounced high-energy tail. It is also found how the electron heat flux and the absorption coefficient depend upon both the ratios of electron mean-free path to the inhomogeneity scale of effective temperature and of the oscillation velocity to the thermal velocity. The actual shapes of electron energy distribution, the heat flux limitation, and the electromagnetic radiation absorption rate are given, both for a currentless plasma and for a plasma with a finite electric current. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We have isolated and characterized a transcribed segment of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from apple (cv. ‘Delicious’) that contains the atp9 gene, and exons a and b of the nad5 gene. Analysis of the cDNA of the atp9 revealed 8 C to U transcript editing events resulting in 7 amino acid changes, and a new stop codon that eliminates 8 carboxy-terminal residues, compared to the genomic sequence. The transcription patterns of atp9, and exons a and b of nad5 share RNA species, indicating that these sequences are part of the same transcriptional unit.

    Notizen: : To examine gastric mucosal ulcerogenic responses to indomethacin and HCl/ethanol in adjuvant arthritic (AA) rats.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods and Results: Arthritis was induced in male Dark Agouti (DA) rats by injection of Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) into the right hind paw. The gastric ulcerogenic response to indomethacin was markedly worsened in AA rats, depending on the degree of arthritic change. This aggravation of indomethacin-induced gastric lesions in AA rats was significantly prevented by NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and amino-guanidine as well as dexamethasone. In contrast, the mucosal ulcerogenic response to HCl/ethanol was inhibited in AA rats. The suppression of HCl/ethanol-induced gastric lesions in AA rats was reversed almost totally by L-NAME and aminoguanidine as well as dexamethasone and partly by indomethacin. The expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA was observed in the stomach of AA rats but not of normal rats. Moreover, the luminal releases of nitric oxide (NO) metabolites as well as prostaglandin (PG) E2 were significantly increased in AA rats.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions: The gastric mucosal ulcerogenic responses were modified in AA rats, in different manners depending on the irritants; an increase in response to indomethacin and a decrease in response to HCl/ethanol. These changes may both be accounted for by increased production of NO by iNOS, and the latter is also partly related to increased production of PGs.

    Notizen: Objectives:To determine the effect of water fluoride concentration on the fluoride profile across the entire thickness of the cementum and root dentine of human permanent anterior teeth in adults. Subjects:Twenty-eight human permanent anterior teeth from individuals aged from 30 to over 60 years were studied. Setting:Teeth were obtained from a natural high-fluoride area (West Hartlepool, UK; 1.0–1.3 ppm F in drinking water, WHP) and the other from a non-fluoridated naturally low fluoride area (Leeds, UK; 0.1 ppm F in drinking water, LDS). Design:Cementum and root dentine were sampled using an abrasive micro-sampling technique from the cementum surface to the pulpal surface of root dentine. Results:Fluoride concentration was higher in tooth roots (the cementum and dentine) taken from the naturally fluoridated area (WHP) than from the non-fluoridated area (LDS). Age and average fluoride concentration showed a positive correlation in WHP dentine, middle region of the root (r = 0.78, P 〈 0.001) and in the apical region of the root (r = 0.67, P 〈 0.05). WHP cementum had the strongest fluoride concentration correlation with age in the cervical region of the root (r = 0.67, P 〈 0.01). An analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the area (water fluoride content), age and number of years lived in the area combined with total age were significant. Conclusions: The fluoride content of cementum and root dentine in adult residents is related to fluoride content in drinking water.

    Notizen: Abstract The nuclear structure of17Ne has been studied by the20Ne(3He,6He)17Ne reaction at 70 MeV. Fifteen levels were identified, and the angular distributions have been measured for 9 levels. The observed transferred angular momentum dependence of the angular distributions enabled clear spin-parity assignment. The extensive completion of T=3/2 quartet in mass A =17 have been obtained for the first time. The present data will provide a chance to study the structure of A=17 system in detail.

    Notizen: Abstract A MultiPhoton-Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MPI/TOFMS) apparatus was developed for real-time measurement of the uranium isotopic ratio in nascent UF5 formed by the 266 nm photolysis of effusive UF6 ( 〈 300 K, ≈ 1.3 × 10−4 Pa). The UF5 was selectively and efficiently multiphoton ionized by 532 nm radiation at appreciably low fluences ( 〈 10 J/cm2). The main ions observed, U+ and U2+, were subsequently analyzed with a TOFMS with mass resolution of 1190 to separate235U n+ and238U n+ completely. The isotopic ratio measurements showed good precision resulting from the excellent agreement which was observed between the isotopic ratios in UF5 products and those in a parent UF6 sample. These results suggested that the MPI/TOFMS method can be applied to the real-time analysis of separation factors in the molecular laser isotope separation of uranium by ionization of UF5 following the infrared photodissociation of UF6.

    Notizen: Abstract In infrared multiphoton dissociation of supercooled UF6 irradiated with multifrequency para-H2 Raman laser beams, separation factors and contrast ratios were measured by selective multiphoton ionization of the photoproduct UF5 at 532 nm followed by time-of-flight mass spectrometric analysis. The relationship between separation factor and contrast ratio is discussed theoretically and quantitatively investigated in the experiments. From this relationship, we obtain the irradiation conditions of the laser-beam fluences for attaining a high separation factor and estimate the value of the intrinsic separation factor in multifrequency dissociation of UF6.
