Notizen: This paper presents results obtained on the Reversed Field eXperiment, RFX [G. Rostagni, Fusion Engineering and Design 25, 301 (1995)], on the study of local transport properties of the RFP configuration both in the standard regime and during improved confinement phases obtained with poloidal current drive. The plasma core is dominated by magnetic turbulence, as indicated by both energy and particle transport analysis. Diffusivity decreases toward the edge and is reduced in the core at high Lundquist number. The edge region is apparently not affected by dynamo mode turbulence and determines global confinement in standard operation. Particle and heat diffusivity in this region show a favorable dependence with increasing density. The most interesting feature of the edge region of RFX consists of a sheared radial electric field with shearing rate comparable to that observed in tokamaks. Indications of turbulence reduction in the shear layer have been obtained. Enhanced energy confinement has been produced by pulsed poloidal current drive (PPCD). A clear reduction of the dynamo activity has been observed with a decrease of core thermal diffusivity to level comparable to the edge and global confinement improvement up to a factor of 3. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In this paper a differential equation is obtained for the variation of the poloidal magnetic field along the cross section of the magnetic field surfaces in a tokamak. Toroidal axisymmetry is assumed. The coefficients of the differential equation depend on the curvature of the family of curves orthogonal to the magnetic field lines. Several shapes of magnetic field surfaces have been analyzed in detail as families of nested curves of circular, elliptic, and triangular elliptic shapes. Closed analytic solutions have been obtained in some cases. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A breaking of the up–down symmetry due to the inductive electric field Eφ is analyzed in detail for particles describing quasibanana orbits in the large aspect ratio approximation. Time-independent and time-dependent electric fields are considered. In the first case it is proved that the classical ∇B drift and the breaking of up–down symmetry due to Eφ lead to a net inward radial drift, which agrees with the well-known Ware pinch formula. The weak points of previous treatments of the Ware pinch, e.g. taking only leading terms in the Taylor expansion of Aφ, are discussed. Yet the results obtained here lead to the same pinch formula, even for banana orbits with a large amplitude of poloidal angle and for more general conditions than previously considered. A more general formula for a time-dependent Eφ has also been found. Our results show from a very general basis that the corresponding polarization type of drift does not play any role in the inward pinch; however, the second time derivative of the inductive electric field Eφ could significantly increase or decrease the usual Ware pinch. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The article presents the design and the first results of a new eight camera, soft x-ray (SXR) and bolometric tomography which has been installed in RFX, a large (R=2 m, a=0.46 m), high current reverse field pinch experiment operating in Padova. The main features of the diagnostic, which has been designed with standards compatible with the requirements of large fusion experiments, are: (a) it allows simultaneous reconstruction of both SXR and total radiation emissivity structures with high spatial and time resolution (bandwidth up to 200 kHz for SXR and 10 kHz for bolometry). Moreover, computer controlled remote actions which interchange up to five material filters in front of the detectors allow the exploration of different energy ranges; (b) it can be easily decoupled from the machine without breaking the main vacuum and can be operated during first wall baking up to 300 °C thanks to a cooling circuit; (c) the detection chain is designed to measure very low signals [in the order of 1 nA for SXR diodes and of 100 μV for bolometers]; (d) it is equipped with a VME based 1 MHz data acquisition system which allows on-line processing of a large amount of data. To accomplish these features the diagnostic consists of eight fully remotely controlled manipulators which can insert eight photocameras, carrying 78 top-rated Si SXR and 48 miniaturized metal film bolometric detectors in their operating positions. Initial results are presented. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: New analog signal conditioning electronics and data acquisition systems have been developed for the soft x-ray and bolometric tomography diagnostic in the reverse field pinch experiment (RFX). For the soft x-ray detectors the analog signal processing includes a fully differential current to voltage conversion, with up to a 200 kHz bandwidth. For the bolometers, a 50 kHz carrier frequency amplifier allows a maximum bandwidth of 10 kHz. In both cases the analog signals are digitized with a 1 MHz sampling rate close to the diagnostic and are transmitted via a transparent asynchronous xmitter/receiver interface (TAXI) link to purpose built Versa Module Europa (VME) modules which perform data acquisition. A software library has been developed for data preprocessing and tomographic reconstruction. It has been written in C language and is self-contained, i.e., no additional mathematical library is required. The package is therefore platform-free: in particular it can perform online analysis in a real-time application, such as continuous display and feedback, and is portable for long duration fusion or other physical experiments. Due to the modular organization of the library, new preprocessing and analysis modules can be easily integrated in the environment. This software is implemented in RFX over three different platforms: open VMS, digital Unix, and VME 68040 CPU. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The design and preliminary results of a target emission probe (TEP), applied to the continuous detection of suprathermal electrons in the edge of fusion plasmas, is presented in this paper. This diagnostic, developed for the RFX reversed field pinch experiment, is based on the measurement of the x-ray emission from a material target, exposed to the edge plasma, due to the bremsstrahlung of the electrons. The diagnostic has been successfully tested in RFX and a clear indication of the presence of a mostly unidirectional fast electron flow in the RFX plasma edge has been found. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In RFX a monitor for the measurement of the on-axis electron temperature with high temporal resolution has been designed and operated during the last experimental campaigns. It consists of four soft x-ray (SXR) diodes which observe the plasma through four beryllium filters of different thickness. In this article the main design issues are presented. The measured values of the temperature, computed both with the standard double foil method and with a fit of all the available signals, are reported, correlated with the main plasma parameters and briefly compared with the results of other diagnostics. The main causes of systematic error, the effect of the noise and the reliability of the results in various plasma conditions have been investigated. Dynamic evaluations of the temperature up to a maximum bandwidth of 5 kHz are described, confirming the potentialities of the technique to follow fast phenomena. Possible improvements of the diagnostic and future developments are also pointed out. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Electron beam ion sources produce very highly charged ions most efficiently in a batch mode as the confinement time can be directly optimized for the production of the desired charge state. If, after confinement, the voltage of the ion-confining downstream dam is lowered rapidly, all ions escape and form an ion beam pulse with a length of a few tens of μs. Raising the main trap voltage while maintaining a constant dam voltage in a "spill-over expulsion" reduces the energy spread of the expelled ions. The longer time periods of "slow-," "leaky batch mode-," and "direct current (dc) batch mode-" expulsions allow for increasing the ion beam duty cycle. Combining the rapid expulsion with one of the latter methods allows for the expulsion of the ions of a single batch in many small microbunches with variable intervals, maintaining the low energy spread and the increased duty cycle of slow expulsions. Combining the "microbunching" with "dc batch mode production" and a multitrap operation will eventually allow for the production of equally intense ion bunches over a wide range of frequencies without any deadtime, and with minimal compromise on the most efficient production parameters. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: An automated system for determinations of transport current–voltage (I–V) characteristics as a function of temperature (25–125 K), magnetic field (0–1.6 T), and magnetic field orientation (−125 to +145°) is described. Currents of up to 100 A are applied either as a continuous ramp or as pulses of 2–100 ms duration. A closed-cycle helium refrigerator provides a rapid (∼45 min), convenient, cost effective, cooldown from 300 to 25 K. Control of current, temperature, magnetic field, and field orientation is fully automated and requires no user interaction. The characterization of performance of a ceramic superconductor typically involves several temperatures, fields, and orientations and requires 8–30 h to complete. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
