Notes: HgBa2Ca2Cu3Oy (Hg-1223) films with a thickness of 1–2 μm and Tc (zero)∼130 K have been fabricated by utilizing a spray pyrolysis technique. X-ray diffraction indicates that the films consist of predominantly Hg-1223 phase grains with c-axis orientation. Moreover, the oscillation photograph taken by a Weissenberg camera confirms that the film grains are in-plane aligned and epitaxially grown on SrTiO3. In electrical transport measurements, the as-fabricated film exhibits a Tc (zero) of 123 K, and a zero-field Jc of 3.7×105 A/cm2 at 77 K. Additional post-annealing at 320 °C for 50 h in flowing oxygen has improved the transport properties as Tc (zero)∼130 K and Jc∼4.4×105 A/cm2 (77 K, 0 T). © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: (Hg1−xRex)Ba2CaCu2Oy (x(approximate)0.1) thin films have been prepared ex situ on LaAlO3 substrates by a two-step process in which an HgO/Re0.1Ba2CaCu2Oy multilayer precursor film is annealed in a quartz tube using an unreacted monoxide pellet containing HgO as an Hg vapor source. By varying the composition of the monoxide pellet, the film orientation can be changed from c-axis to the predominantly a-axis one. The a-axis growth of the grains directly on the substrate is confirmed by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic observation, although the grains are twinned with 90° orientation. The a-axis films exhibit a Tc onset and Tc zero of approximately 110–127 and 55 K, respectively, suggesting substantial influence of weak links at the grain boundaries on their transport properties. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In bronchogenic squamous cell carcinoma, a growth pattern along the alveolar walls of the peripheral lung parenchyma is unusual. In order better to understand the way tumour cells invade the peripheral lung parenchyma, we studied two cases of squamous cell carcinoma with invasion along the alveolar walls (in 30% to 40% of the area surrounding the tumour). We used immunohistochemical staining with antibodies against pulmonary surfactant, apoproteins (PE-10) and collagen type IV, and electron microscopy. Tumour cells invading the peripheral lung tissue were located between one layer of type II alveolar epithelial cells and the basement membrane of the alveolar walls. These results suggest that the cells of a squamous carcinoma (unlike an adenocarcinoma) have the ability to spread along the basement membrane of the alveolar walls without destroying pre-existing normal peripheral lung parenchyma.

Notes: The co-aggregation characteristics between Fusobacterium nucleatum and streptococci were examined to clarify the adherence factors participating in the co-aggregation. Nineteen strains of F. nucleatum were classified into 8 groups according to co-aggregation titer and inhibition by L-arginine, L-lysine and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine (or lactose). The inhibition activity was, however, very different from strain to strain. With two fusobacterial strains, two inhibitors, which were both inhibition negative on their own, completely inhibited the co-aggregation when used together in a mixture. In some co-aggregation pairs, the protease treatment of F. nucleatum inactivated one of the adherence factors, and resulted in the change of inhibition characteristics. These results indicate the multimodal co-aggregation of F. nucleatum with streptococci mediated by L-arginine-sensitive, L-lysine-sensitive, N-acetyl-D-galactosamine-sensitive and some resistant factors, and that the adherence factor or factors participating in the co-aggregation change according to the co-aggregation partners.

Notes: Abstract  Objective. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of continuous leg traction on contrast-enhanced MR imaging of the hip joint and to determine whether MR imaging under these conditions is useful for demonstrating acetabular labral tears. Design and patients. Nineteen hips underwent MR imaging with a T1-weighted spin-echo sequence, followed by MR imaging under continuous leg traction after intravenous injection of gadolinium-DTPA. Joint fluid enhancement and labral contour detection were evaluated. Eleven hips had labral tears shown by conventional arthrography, arthroscopy and macroscopic surgical findings. Assessment of labral tears by MR imaging was correlated with the diagnosis based on these standard techniques. Results and conclusions. Joint fluid enhancement was obtained in all hips at 30 min after injection. Superior and inferior labral surfaces were completely delineated in 1 hip on the unenhanced MR images, and in 7 and 13 hips, respectively, on the enhanced images under traction. The enhanced images under traction depicted 9 of the 11 labral tears. Comparison between the unenhanced image and the enhanced image under traction avoided mistaking undercutting of the labrum for a tear in 4 hips. Contrast-enhanced MR imaging under traction was valuable for detecting labral tears non-invasively and without radiation. Follow-up examinations using this method in patients with acetabular dysplasia can help to clarify the natural course of labral disorders and enable better treatment planning.

Notes: Abstract  Objective. The purpose of this study was to evaluate ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury of the elbow in throwing athletes by MRI and MR arthrography. Design. Ten elbows of throwing athletes were examined on both plain MRI and MR saline arthrography and the injuries subsequently surgically proven. Spin-echo (SE) T1-weighted and fast SE T2-weighted coronal images were obtained. Results. The UCL was unclear in all ten cases on T1-weighted MRI. In five cases an avulsion fracture was also found on T1-weighted MRI. On T2-weighted MRI, abnormal high-intensity areas were identified in or around the UCL. On T2-weighted MR arthrography images, extracapsular high-intensity areas, which represent extracapsular leakage, were found in four of five cases with avulsion fracture. At surgery, all these four cases showed avulsion fractures with instability; the other case had a fracture but it was stable and adherent to the humerus. On T2-weighted MR arthrography images, an extracapsular high-intensity area was found in one of the five cases without avulsion fracture. At surgery this patient had a complete tear of the UCL itself. Conclusion. MR arthrography provided additional information for evaluating the degree of UCL injury.

Notes: Abstract  We investigated the immunoreactivity for bcl-2 oncoprotein in 154 cases of transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract (TCC-UUT) and its relation with the immunoreactivity for p53 oncoprotein and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunoreactivity. Immunohistochemically, bcl-2 oncoprotein was recognized as positive in 29.2% of the samples. The immunoreactivity for bcl-2 oncoprotein was significantly (P 〈 0.05) correlated only with stage, though there was a borderline correlation (P = 0.050) with PCNA immunoreactivity. Furthermore, in invasive TCC the immunoreactivity for bcl-2 oncoprotein was associated with PCNA immunoreactivity (P 〈 0.041). The 5-year disease-free and overall survival rates were 55.7% and 71.5%, respectively. A univariate analysis of survival revealed that stage, grade, pattern of growth, immunoreactivity for p53 oncoprotein, and PCNA immunoreactivity each had a significant effect on disease-free and overall survival rates, whereas the immunoreactivity for bcl-2 oncoprotein had no significant effect on either rate. In the final models of the multivariate analysis, stage was found to be the only prognostic factor for disease-free survival and for overall survival. Detection of immunoreactivity for bcl-2 oncoprotein appears to be of no real value in deciding the prognosis of TCC-UUT.

Notes: Abstract. We report a case of alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) of the thigh with lung metastases in a 22-year-old woman. The findings of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and MRI contributed to the diagnosis of ASPS. Especially dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI was useful for evaluating the effect of chemoembolotherapy.
