    Notizen: Lattice-matched p-doped GaAs–Ga0.51In0.49P quantum well intersub-band photodetectors with three different well widths have been grown on GaAs substrates by metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition and fabricated into mesa structures. The photoresponse cutoff wavelength varies between 3.5 and 5.5 μm by decreasing the well width from 50 down to 25 A(ring). Dark current measurements as a function of temperature reveal activation energies for thermionic emission that closely correspond to measured cutoff wavelengths. Experimental results are in reasonable agreement with Kronig–Penney calculations. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We demonstrate quantum well infrared photodetectors based on a GaAs/Ga0.51In0.49P superlattice structure grown by gas-source molecular beam epitaxy. Wafers were grown with varying well widths. Wells of 40, 65, and 75 Å resulted in peak detection wavelengths of 10.4, 12.8, and 13.3 μm with a cutoff wavelength of 13.5, 15, and 15.5 μm, respectively. The measured peak and cutoff wavelengths match those predicted by eight band theoretical analysis. Measured dark currents were lower than equivalent GaAs/AlGaAs samples. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Background limited infrared photodetection has been achieved up to 100 K at normal incidence with p-type GaAs/Ga0.71In0.29As0.39P0.61 quantum well intersubband photodetectors grown by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Photoresponse covers the wavelength range from 2.5 μm up to 7 μm. The device shows photovoltaic response, the cutoff wavelength increases slightly with bias, and the responsivity increases nonlinearly with bias. These effects are attributed to an asymmetric quantum well profile. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Summary The coagulation cascade has a potential role in brain edema formation due to intracerebral hemorrhage. In this study blood and other solutions were injected stereotactically into the right basal ganglia in rats. Twenty-four hours following injection, brain water and ion contents were measured to determine the amount of brain edema. Intracerebral blood resulted in an increase in brain water content. The amount of brain edema surrounding the intracerebral hematoma was reduced by a thrombin inhibitor Na-(2-Naphthalenesulfonylglycyl)-4-amidino-DL-phenylalaninepiperidide, (α-NAPAP) infused into the hematoma after the clot had been allowed to solidify. The inhibitor did not alter the actual size of the clot mass. An artificial clot composed of fibrinogen, thrombin, and styrene microspheres also produced brain edema. A fibrin clot led to edema formation even in the absence of mass effect provided by the microspheres. The single component responsible for production of brain edema in all these models was thrombin. The edema was formed in response to a fibrinogen-independent pathway. These results indicate that the coagulation cascade is involved in brain edema that develops adjacent to an intracerebral hematoma.

    Notizen: Summary. Objectives. In this study we address clinimetric issues that pertain to the screening of responsiveness to intrathecal baclofen (ITB) in dystonia. Methods. Eight patients with severe dystonia, who did not respond to oral medication, were evaluated in a double-blind placebo controlled ascending dose screening procedure, which included a randomised sequence of injections of 25, 50 and 75 μg baclofen and placebo. Self-assessments of dystonia severity on a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Dyskinesia Rating Scale (DRS) were carried out at baseline 1, 4 and 8 hours after a bolus injection. Results. Compared to the VAS, the DRS lacked responsiveness in all patients. Baseline scores of the VAS scores varied considerably between and within patients and underscore the need to express response scores in relation to the baseline. After placebo administration some patients showed a persistent improvement of about 30% across the day, while at some assessments improvements of 〉50% were noted. Based on the aforementioned findings, a responsiveness coefficient was used which relates the baclofen effect size to the non-specific score changes that may occur as a placebo effect or as random fluctuations in dystonia. Four patients with a responsiveness coefficient 〉2 received pump implantation and did well on continuous infusion of ITB. Several side effects occurred during the screening procedure, but none interfered with the execution of the screening procedure. Conclusions. This study demonstrates important clinimetric issues that need to be taken into account when screening for responsiveness to ITB.
