    Notes: Brown trout Salmo trutta is one of the most valuable species inhabiting river drainages in Galicia (northwestern Spain). The influence of man, through overfishing and pollution, is thought to have caused the decline of trout in Galician rivers. To balance the possible population decline, Galician rivers have been stocked extensively with a brown trout stock of German origin during the last 30 years. In this study, the incidence of stocking practices has been investigated by an LDH-5* genetic marker. A very low number of stocked individuals have been observed within river populations, despite the long period of repopulation. Only eight out of the 44 populations analysed showed a limited number of individuals of hatchery origin. Most stocked individuals detected were 0+ age, and showed a poor condition factor (K 〈 1). Environmental factors (muscular stamina and food habits) and genetic factors (different selective conditions in hatchery medium) are invoked to explain the low viability of hatchery fish Observed in this Study.

    Notes: Growth of in situ As doped Hg1−xCdxTe by molecular beam epitaxy and activation of As at 250 °C is reported. We have used elemental arsenic, As4, as the p-type dopant source. The activation of As was observed in the 1016–1018 cm−3 range after a low temperature annealing step at 250 °C. However, for doping levels above 5×1018 cm−3, we have observed that the As activation efficiency drops. It is speculated at this time that self-compensation and formation of neutral As complexes may limit doping efficiency at very high levels. We also report our data on the structural and electrical characteristics of these As doped p-type layers using secondary ion mass spectroscopy analysis, and Hall effect measurements. An acceptor activation energy of 5.4 meV was obtained based on the dependence of the Hall coefficient on temperature. This value was attributed to singly ionized As located on a Te site (AsTe•) acting as an acceptor. A brief discussion on activation mechanism of As doped p-type HgCdTe material is also presented. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The carrier profile for MBE grown In0.35Ga0.65As/GaAs multiquantum well laser structures with nominally undoped and beryllium-doped active regions was determined by using the capacitance–voltage (C–V) technique at room temperature. A simple theoretical model was used to extract the impurity concentration and the quantum-well carrier density from the experimental profiles. We obtained a high carrier concentration in nominally undoped devices caused by a strong growth temperature dependent Be diffusion from the p-cladding layer, and no difference between doped samples with different nominal dopant location. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A comparative study between hydroxyapatite coatings produced by two different techniques, plasma spray (PS) and pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) was carried out. Plasma spray is currently commercially used for coating dental and orthopaedical implant devices, and pulsed-laser deposition (or laser-ablation deposition) gave good results in the field of high critical temperature superconductive thin films, and is being applied to produce calcium phosphate coatings for biomedical purposes. X-ray diffraction was used to control the crystallinity of the coatings, scanning electron microscopy for the surface and cross-sectional morphology, and the pull test to determine the tensile strength of the coatings. This study reveals that the pulsed-laser deposition technique appears to be a very good candidate to replace the plasma spray in many biomedical applications, because it overcomes most of the drawbacks of the plasma spray.

    Notes: Abstract Calcium phosphate coatings have been produced by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) at different water-vapour pressures. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data allows us to determine that the structure of these coatings is apatitic with carbonate substitution for phosphate. The carbonate substitution decreases when the chamber pressure is raised, a fact that has been corroborated by Fourier transform–infrared (FT–IR) spectroscopy. Carbonate concentrations between 5 and 17 wt% have been calculated for the crystalline samples. Amorphous coatings are produced at the lowest and highest pressures due to the high carbonate concentration in the first case, and possibly to another type of substitution (Mg2+, HPO2-4, P2O4-7) or the inherent kinetics of the PLD process, in the second case.

    Notes: Abstract The performance of two multivariate calibration methods, multiple linear regression (MULTI3) and partial least-square regression (PLS-2), for the resolution of the ternary mixtures of acetylsalicylic acid-caffeine-codeine and acetaminophen-caffeine-codeine is compared. The methodologies were checked by applying them to the analysis of two sets of laboratory-prepared mixtures over the concentration ranges 13.0–19.0, 1.00–3.00 and 0.20–1.00 μg · ml–1 for acetylsalicylic acid-caffeine-codeine and 12.0–22.0, 0.40–2.00 and 0.20–1.00 μg · ml–1 for acetamimophen-caffeine-codeine, respectively. While the results provided by MULTI3 were unacceptable in the majority of the cases, those obtained by PLS-2 were quite good with considerably diminished errors, as a result of calibration and/or checking with MULTI3, taking no account of potential interactions between analytes. It was shown that it is possible by using PLS-2 to resolve complex mixtures of analytes in a highly disparate proportion, even when they have overlapping signals. The proposed method was successfully demonstrated for pharmaceutical tablets.

    Notes: Amorphous calcium phosphate coatings were produced by pulsed laser deposition from targets of nonstoichiometric hydroxyapatite (Ca/P = 1.70) at a low substrate temperature of 300 °C. They were heated in air at different temperatures: 300, 450, 525 and 650 °C. Chemical and structural analyses of these coatings were performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR, and SEM. XRD analysis of the as-deposited and heated coatings revealed that their crystallinity improved as heat treatment temperature increased. The main phase was apatitic, with some β-tricalcium phosphate in the coatings heated at 525 and 600 °C. In the apatitic phase there was some carbonate substitution for phosphate and hydroxyl ions at 450 °C and almost solely for phosphate at 525 and 600 °C as identified by FTIR. This was accompanied by a higher hydroxyl content at 525 and 600 °C. At 450 °C a texture on the coating surface was observable by SEM that was attributable to a calcium hydroxide and calcite formation by XRD. These phases almost disappeared at 600 °C, probably due to a transformation into calcium oxide. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res (Appl Biomater) 43: 69-76, 1998
