Notes: Abstract Mussel bed community structure of two intertidal mytilids, Septifer virgatus (Wiegmann) and Hormomya mutabilis (Gould), whose beds were contiguous vertically on a rocky intertidal shore (Wakayama Prefecture, Japan), was compared between 1982 and 1983. In the upper S. virgatus bed, crustaceans and bivalves were dominant in terms of both number of individuals and biomass. There were three barnacle species representative of the epizoans, two isopods and one amphipod as mobile fauna, and two bivalves as infauna. The lower H. mutabilis bed supported virtually no epizoans or mobile fauna. Infaunal free-ranging polychaetes and sipunculids were dominant in terms of both number of individuals and biomass. The H. mutabilis bed contained a much greater amount of sediment than did the S. virgatus bed, and the interstices among individual H. mutabilis and among their byssal threads were filled with sediment. The biomass of six of nine species dominant in the S. virgatus bed was negatively correlated with the amount of sediment. Recruitment of these faunal assemblages into artificial mussel clumps was examined in mussel enclosure experiments, and a negative sediment effect in H. mutabilis clumps was detected for one isopod and one limpet species. Factors causing the differences between two mussel bed communities are discussed, focusing on the effects of sediment.

Notes: An imaging vacuum-ultraviolet monochromator has been developed to provide the space-resolved impurity line emissions from magnetically confined plasmas. With minor modifications of a commercial normal incidence monochromator, a pinhole entrance slit and a microchannel plate detector displaced away from the exit slit, the instrument performs two-dimensional spectroscopic observations in the wavelength range from 400 to 2000 A(ring). Ray tracing has been performed to understand the spatial imaging properties in the practical geometric configuration. The measured spatial resolution is about 0.5 and 1 mrad in dispersion and vertical plane, respectively, with the entrance slit of 0.1 mm width and height. The results of the testing experiments and the measurements carried out on the JIPP T-IIU tokamak plasma are presented and discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  We reported previously that tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) inhibited proliferation and invasiveness of human malignant glial cells. Because tamoxifen, an estrogen antagonist, has also been shown to inhibit growth of such cells, we hypothesized that a combination of tamoxifen and TNFα might be more effective than either reagent alone. TNFα (1–100 ng/ml) or tamoxifen (80 ng/ml–2μ g/ml) alone inhibited proliferation of a human glioblastoma cell line (WITG3) in a dose-dependent fashion; in combination, tamoxifen and TNFα yielded additive growth inhibition. Apoptotic cells characterized by nuclear fragmentation were detectable after 48 h of TNFα or tamoxifen exposure and were significantly increased by combination treatment. In non-neoplastic human astroglia and fibroblasts, proliferation was unaffected by tamoxifen, and enhanced by TNFα as previously reported. Staurosporine (2–50 nM), which has been reported to augment the effects of TNFα, was less effective than tamoxifen against WITG3 and, in addition, was markedly inhibitory to non-neoplastic glial cells. Binding studies yielded no evidence of WITG3 estrogen or progesterone receptors, nor of tamoxifen effects on TNFα receptors. Data suggest that TNFα and tamoxifen in combination display growth-regulatory properties, which (a) are more inhibitory to human glioblastoma cells than either agent alone, (b) do not affect non-neoplastic glia, (c) do not require either estrogen/progesterone receptors or alteration of external TNFα receptors, and (d) may involve apoptosis.

Notes: Abstract Expression and localization of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) in rat articular cartilage during fetal and postnatal periods were investigated by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. PHTrP displayed distinct distribution and intensity of staining at different ages. In fetal (18-day-old) and young (3-week-old) rats, articular chondrocytes expressed abundant PTHrP throughout the entire thickness of cartilage. In contrast, in 60-week-old rats, PTHrP was expressed in a few articular chondrocytes of superficial and middle layers. Regulation of PTHrP and PTH/PTHrP receptor mRNA was also studied in cultured rat articular chondrocytes. Northern blot analysis revealed that both transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), an important stimulator for chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation, and 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) stimulated the expression of PTHrP mRNA with down-regulation of its receptor mRNA. In contrast, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) down-regulated the expression of receptor without changes of PTHrP mRNA level. These results suggest that the changes in abundance and localization of PTHrP and its receptor may be directly involved in the cell growth and differentiation of articular cartilage.

    Notes: Summary. Given any triangle $ \Delta $ , let $ \Delta(d) $ be the d-skeleton of $ \Delta $ for d = 0, 1, 2. The space $ {\cal H}_{\Delta}(d) $ of all continuous functions in $ {\Bbb R}^2 $ satisfying the mean value property with respect to $ \Delta(d) $ is determined explicitly for each d = 0 , 1, 2. We have $ \dim {\cal H}_{\Delta (d)} = 6 $ if the origin is the barycenter of $ \Delta $ (resp. the incenter of $ \Delta' $ ) for d = 0, 2 (resp. for d = 1), where $ \Delta' $ is the reciprocal triangle of $ \Delta $ ; otherwise $ {\cal H}_{\Delta (d)} = 2 $ . Moreover there exists a homogeneous polynomial F d (x) such that $ {\cal H}_{\Delta (d)} $ is generated by F d (x) as a $ {\Bbb R}[\partial] $ -module, F d (x) being determined explicitly.

Notes: Summary In contrast to the wild type Sendai virus fusion protein (F), a mutated F to possess a cleavage site similar to that of virulent Newcastle disease virus F, could be cleaved by proteases present in COS cells. When mutated F and hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) were coexpressed at the cell surface, syncytium formation was observed.

Notes: Abstract The association between intracranial aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) is well documented. Recent advances in the understanding of the haemodynamics of this association encourage an aggressive approach to these aneurysms. However, the pathophysiology of these aneurysms is not fully understood and a strategy for their management has not been established. We describe seven patients, with eight aneurysms, on the feeding arteries of AVMs. The aneurysms could be divided into those located 1. proximally on the superficial feeding artery (type I; 4 aneurysms); 2. distally on the superficial feeding artery (type II; 3 aneurysms); and 3. on the deep feeding artery (type III; 1 aneurysm). All aneurysms were treated by the endovascular procedure prior to, or simultaneously with, treatment of the AVM, using detachable coils or liquid embolic material. All aneurysms were obliterated successfully, with no adverse events. Each patient further received treatment of the AVM. None of the patients suffered intracranial haemorrhage after treatment for the aneurysms. Based on our experiences, we discuss the indications for this approach for each type of aneurysm. We believe endovascular treatment could be an important alternative for treatment of aneurysms associated with AVMs, thus reducing the risk of haemorrhage.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé.
Notes: Summary. We observed the structural changes in blood vessels entering the growth plates of the femur and tibia of rats during growth using scanning electron microscopy. The penetrating vessels had blind endings which were bulbous at a time when rats showed rapid skeletal development. With subsequent slowing of development, the density of the vessels decreased and the blind endings became short stumps. These changes were more prominent in the proximal femur than in the distal femur and proximal tibia. The present study indicates an intimate relation between endochondral ossification in the growth plate and the structure of the penetrating vessels.
